My uncle had a casket company in Detroit a few blocks away from the GM Hamtramack plant. He later sold the company to Batesville Caskets. Anyway, one day I was visiting him there and one of his employees owned one of these and he asked me to move it from across the street into the company garage so it wouldn't get stolen or stripped. That's the only time I've ever been in one and I remember that over the top dashboard. It wasn't so much just the '80s. It was just the design language of that particular car. I had an 86 Prelude at the time and of which I thought the dashboard was pretty well laid out. Actually, I miss that Prelude.
Awesome find I seen the later version of these there was a sports car or coupe and a hatch or wagon. There were 3 or maybe more owned by a guy on the street I lived on. They look cool. I dont think I seen this generation one in person. Note of interest the later generaration was also marketed as Asuna Sunfire Asuna was a GM Canada only brand. Also I bave a couple pictures of one and of over 10000 pictures on Flickr it has the most views and by a pretty large amount too
When I lived in El Paso on Army gentleman living next to me had a brand new one that was maroon and had the suspension by lotus and it was a turbo, nice-looking car
There was one of these In a guy's back yard near where I live it was hit hard in the nose though old man would sell it he died a few years ago and it went to the scrap yard...along with a trio of 63 falcons I really wanted
That thing looks like a porche in the backend..pretty wild ive never seen one..and yah buddy a big Ol Fart can..lot people over here call them things a big Ol coffee can...😅
They just seem to pop up at the yards and since I visit quite a bit of them, something cool is bound to show up. This particular yard is out in the country but they get some good stuff very so often

It was actually designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and called the Piazza in the world market. The Impulse was the name for the US market. This one has the 2.3L 4ZD1 non-turbo four-cylinder engine and was made in Fujisawa, Japan. Yes, turbo and non-turbo versions of the car were available. The turbo was the 2.0L (4CZ1-T), which this one is not as you stated. This one is code 809 Parthenon Ivory exterior paint. Whoa Nelley, 2.3 and it's over for thee. That's it, time to quit. Made in Japan and ready for the trash can. Going to be flat and that's that. Lotus "designed", you can't save its hide. 1988 and soon to meet the final fate. Going to get squished and many here, perhaps Benny, but nah, not really the Google Man are going to be pissed.
Almost came home with one of these until my GF at the time let me know she was not impressed and it was either get the Mustang GT I had been wanting or be on my own.

I owned a silver 1986 Impulse with manual transmission back in 2001. Bought it for $500. Such a beautiful unusual car, still remember it .

Girl was gone by end of 1988 and Mustang was swapped for an 89 Escort GT when I was down selling Ford's in Florida in 1990.@@ClassicRideSociety
