Rarely does a country go to war with a private company. But America has done just that. But is this really about Huawei or is it something bigger than that? And what is the threat?
What is this war really about and why is Huawei in the middle of it?
Founded in China in 1987 Huawei is now the world’s largest maker of telecoms equipment with revenues exceeding $103bn. When you think about Huawei you might think about the handset. That makes sense, since it sold 200m of them in 2018 alone. But close to half of its revenue comes from selling network equipment. In fact, since 2014 it’s outgrown all its competitors reaching over 3bn people.
This is how networks function - Your phone sends a signal to a nearby tower using radio waves, voice and data are passed over an internal network run by your phone company, which connects your handset to other phone users and the wider internet. In other words, these antennas connect us all. But now, there’s a new kind of network. Although 5G is massively overhyped, it is coming and Huawei is a leading force in this innovation. But though this computerised, smart future opens up new possibilities it comes with a health warning. Because if entire networks are vulnerable this opens the door to countries spying on one another.
In a rare interview with The Economist Ren Zhengfei, Huawei’s founder and CEO, talked about the political storm surrounding his company. As the argument rages over the security of Huawei’s products the effects can be seen in some unexpected places. Joe Franell runs Eastern Oregon Telecom, a small network serving the people of this rural area. The problem is that the network here relies on Huawei technology.
It’s a similar story around the world Mobile-phone users in developing countries have benefited from Huawei’s attractive deals. But how is Huawei undercutting its competitors?
Whether or how Huawei is connected to and subsidised by the Chinese government is unclear. But what is clear is this - China is the kind of country where if the party says jump all you can say is, well how high? Loyalty to the state is actually enshrined in China’s intelligence law
Article 7, a 2017 addition, states that “Any organisation or citizen shall support, assist and co-operate with the state intelligence work.” Critics say this law means that when you buy Huawei equipment you may be exposing yourself to surveillance by the Chinese intelligence services. And this makes governments very uncomfortable.
The fear is that Huawei will leave backdoor vulnerabilities in its networks that would provide China with an opportunity to spy on its competitors and enemies. To counter this mistrust, Huawei has shared its code and allowed the likes of Britain’s National Cyber Security Centre
to scan it for backdoors. So, if there’s no solid security threat why is America making an enemy out of Huawei?
It seems as though the concern over Huawei is not only about America’s security but also its insecurity. And it’s causing collateral damage at home as well as abroad. In May 2019 the Trump administration issued an executive order which not only forbade American companies from supplying Huawei with components, but restricted domestic networks from using its equipment. It’s a move that feels like an own goal to Americans like Joe Franell.
And there’s another uncomfortable truth that America can’t ignore. Smartphone technology relies on a truly global supply chain. Take an average smartphone. Some contain components from more than 200 international suppliers. Screens might be made by Samsung in South Korea. The camera lens engineered in Germany. The chip could be designed by a California-based company and manufactured in Taiwan. The battery could come from Japan and the audio chip from China. But increasingly, hostility and lack of trust threaten to fracture these supply chains.
America's concerns about Huawei are understandable. But the risks can be managed by limiting the use of Huawei equipment to less sensitive parts of 5G networks. That way it is possible to benefit from the low cost of Huawei’s equipment while minimising security concerns.
Billions of people around the world have benefited from increased connectivity made possible by global standards and global supply chains. But if political mistrust divides the telecoms industry into rival camps
everybody stands to lose

If you look at how USA prints money like its free and how it maintain its currency as global reserve with petrodollar and sanctions on countries that tries to setup its own trade outside of USD, you then know why America is so afraid of China's rise. Because if one day the world move away from USD as global reserve fund and trade, America can no longer print money and make the world pay. More so, given that trillions of dollars of debt, USD would overnight becomes worthless. When it was Japan that was on the rise, they started a trade war against Japan and they won. Now its China, except that China is far bigger and stronger than Japan is. America is now very desperate.

It's not all American. Many technologies have been found by the European counties, especially the Nordic countries like Sweden or Finland. 2G was found by Finland. 3G and 4G/LTE are pretty much the same.
Since the time of 2G, there were 2 different technology standards: CDMA which is made in America and GSM which is made in Europe. By the time of 3G, CDMA lost out and Nortel went bankrupt first, followed by Lucent being acquired by Alcatel. Eventually, during the time of 4G, Alcatel-Lucent got acquired by Nokia - so the are no telecoms equipment manufacturers left in America.

Huawei mobile phone has the strongest signal according my experience, when we are in countryside to book flight, only Huawei can finish, while Iphone and Sumsung failed, i think it because Huawei is professional on communication device.

Thirty years ago, Toshiba exported precision instruments to Russia. The United States has imposed the following penalties on Toshiba Group.
1: The Japanese Police Department was ordered to arrest Erhe Lin, President of Toshiba Machinery Foundry, and Hiroshima Tanamura, President of Machine Tool Business, and sentenced to 10 years'imprisonment.
2: Closing Toshiba's factory in the United States
3: A 100% tariff on Toshiba products sold to the United States
4: As an alternative punishment to the previous one, Toshiba's exports to the United States were banned for five years.
5: A huge fine of 1 trillion yen was imposed on Toshiba, equivalent to $16 billion today.
In order to calm the anger of the United States, Japan has imposed severe penalties on Toshiba Group:
First, Japan's semiconductor industry will unconditionally share technology with American companies.
Second, Toshiba spent 100 million yen to publish a full-page apology advertisement in all major newspapers in the United States.
Thirdly, Japan Semiconductor Association invested 9 million US dollars to launch various relations lobbying in the US Congress, and this lobbying has become the most costly lobbying war in history.
Fourthly, the chairman and general manager of Toshiba Group resigned.
Fifthly, by an administrative order issued by the Ministry of Communications, Toshiba is prohibited from exporting any products to 14 countries for a period of one year.
The United States is the master of Japan, Japan can only apologize, which has led to Toshiba gradually losing its past glory.
Toshiba was the hope of Japan's science and technology industry, and also the hope and pillar of Japan's manufacturing. After suffering a heavy blow from the United States, Toshiba went downhill thoroughly.
The U.S. attacked Toshiba not because it sold equipment to the Soviet Union, but because it affected U.S. interests. The United States believes that the Japanese semiconductor industry represented by Toshiba Group seriously threatens the economic interests of the United States, while the Japanese high-end manufacturing plan threatens the United States and challenges the technological hegemony of the United States.
Looking back more than 30 years ago, the experience of Toshiba, Japan, and looking at what the United States is doing today, there are indeed many similarities.
The United States does not allow its high-end manufacturing industry to be challenged at all, nor does it allow its technological hegemony to be challenged. The United States hopes that other countries will all be American workers and will never allow other countries to become shareholders of American interests.

Ain't the first time America has had competition. We were playing second fiddle to Europe until WW1 and WW2 weakened them and allowed America to overtake them far sooner than would have been possible if those two wars had not happened.
We then competed with the USSR from the 40's till they collapsed at the beginning of the 90s.
This conflict between China and America is a lot like the old cold war. The only difference is that I do not see America or China falling apart in 50 or 60 years.
Right now, China will probably overtake America in economic power sometime soon. However, barring consecutive presidents like Trump or Hollywood collapsing, I see American political and cultural influence in the world being stronger than China's. Then of course there is the expected rise of India sometime this century. I would not be surprised if in the next 30 to 50 years India overtakes China's economy just like China is overtaking America's.
It will be an interesting century.

The Economists main point seemed to be that US should trust China because mistrust is a bad thing. There was no real attempt to explore how such a network could be used by China in wartime. There was some reference to intercepting data but no mention of being able to completely shutdown an enemy's communications. Such networks would be the first thing to be shutdown before a major attack.
Lets ignore how they never brought up that the actual reason was how they couldn't spy on citizens as easily and they didn't want china to have enough power to eo anything major to them

Every country has the right to fear of anything but no government must interfere in international trade. Fear is no excuse when the country cannot produce a convincing evidence. May be the fear of Huawei is not security but of Huawei's technology.
