I struggle with the high hat and kick/bass drum coordination - the pedals. Are there any practice drills you could recommend? Thanks great lesson!

Hi Bobby! I have a couple of ideas, but can you tell me more about what is tripping you up? Any particular pattern?

@@Zepparella timing is my issue. I look at great drummers and they can work the bass drum and high hat while doing awesome runs. I find myself challenged between the two. I find my high hat working at a fster beat while keeping the bass at a consistent beat and working everything else. The high hat is going @ tit-tit,tit-tit and the bass is going boom,-ba-boom. And, meanwhile you are running the snare, tom-toms and cymbols. And, then have bring all back together again. I am not as coordinated as I want to be. But, I appreciate your advice, just be free.

But, like any instrument, people expect to hear what they know and can identify with. Even down too drum patterns.

@@blroy1018 Hi Bobby, I'm sorry for the delay in responding to this. It was years for my hi hat to do anything I wanted it to do!. One day I looked down, and it was working. So first thing, just keep at it. Another idea, I started to play around with tapping my feet when I was not sitting at the drums, and imagining how they work together. It is annoying for people sitting next to me at a dinner table, but I make up little games, like playing paradiddles between them. This kind of made me see how the two feet work both against each other and with each other. Then, I started to think about one hit PROPELLING the next hit. Like the left foot propelling the snare hand, or the bass drum, etc. It's all pretty goofy mind stuff, but just keep trying to look at it in different ways. Sometimes, I imagine dancing, and for some reason that helps. Or imagining that when the foot comes up, it is hitting something above the pedal coordinated with whatever is hitting on that beat. Make any sense?
