The main character this time is Makoto Nakano, a thatched roof craftsman. Born and raised in Miyama, I started a company called "Miyama Kayabuki", a thatched roof craftsman's company.
Do you know what thatched roof "kaya" is and what it really is?
In fact, there is no plant called kaya, but it is a collective name for rice straw, pampas grass straw, and reeds. These straw-shaped plants are excellent at insulating and retaining heat, keeping thatched houses cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
Nakano became a thatched roof craftsman after seeing the scenery of the Cotswolds in England on a journey of self-discovery in his twenties. Mr. Nakano was shocked to find that the same scenery as where he was born and raised spread across England and was fascinated by its beauty.
Currently, he has established a company of thatched roof craftsmen, which is rare in Japan, and is devoted to training young craftsmen.
My dream is to make Miyama Kayabuki no Sato a World Heritage Site. For that reason, Mr. Nakano was doing a certain activity.
