So how did George Ford down Argentina? | Rugby World Cup 2023 Analysis

- It was a masterclass. A phenomenal fly-half performance guided a written-off England to an opening round win over Argentina that might just secure the pool. But how did they do it, and should the rest of the competition be worried?
If you've enjoyed any of the channel's content, you can also support Squidge Rugby on Patreon by visiting / squidgerugby , so I can extend my George Ford shrine
Honestly as much as people talk about the laws, the refereeing, the commentary etc. as barriers for entry, the fact that rugby boards consistently refuse to let other people fairly use their media is one of the biggest things stopping this wonderful game from spreading more
Thanks for still doing this Squidge
Maybe not the biggest reason, but certainly one of the most inexcusable. It's so easy to fix!
This was an issue the last world cup, it was pointed out to them and four years later nothing has been done. The issue is that too many powers that be are way too comfortable letting international rugby be the same big teams playing each other ad infinitum. There is no vision for an actual international game beyond the myopic self interest of a cartel of around 8 nations (argentina and italy are supposed to be happy to be there). Rugby must be the only sport where expansion fought tooth and nail. The NFL is thinking about going to Europe, the Giro d´ Italia once wanted to depart from Washington DC, in football they now have a third European competition but rugby is thinking about closing the shop up even more with their infernal World League idea. And then they´re wondering why there isnt any money. Well mr. Beaumont, if you figured out how a youtube works and are reading this, the NFL doesn´t want to go to Europe out of the goodness of their harts, but because there is a lot of money to be mad. It seems almost condencending to Squidge Rugby viewers to be explaining this here, but if you expand a business it actually makes more money for everyone involved.
@@GRB-tj6uj Your last point raises something interesting about rugby isn't "thinking like a business" by seeking to expand itself. We have to remember that rugby union has been professional for less than 30 years! For a long time it was the preserve of a small network of posh hobbyists, the sort of people who are used to getting their way, and don't want to see their influence diluted by young upstarts; and that legacy persists even a generation after professionalisation.
This extends to video games as well. Let game publishers/ developers use licenses for competitions, teams, logos etc, the more rugby games out there with real teams and competiutions the better for the sport. FIFA pretty much made football a major sport in the USA, even a single rugby game could do the same for rugby. PS shoutout Rugby 24, actually looks like it will be amazing!
Now you understand the game. Watch the remainder of the pool games, and note how often England, SA and France get the benefit of refereeing calls. Why would this be you ask? Because between them they bring the largest Television viewing audience to the sport. That's why one of those three is virtually guaranteed to make the final, and probably two of them will.
It's great to see Rugby doing its best to make growing the game through the internet as hard as possible
Now we just need an exclusive apple tv deal or something to really keep the fans out
@@alternatehistorysports Don't give them ideas lol
@@alternatehistorysports already have that in Aus. Stan sport... Woohoo. Great way to make sure no one watches.
@DanVal4 I live in Aus and Stan Spot is a decent product. But you just feel that there needs to be a concerted effort to make the game more accessible.
Without a doubt, Rugby is the worst marketed major sport in the world.
Thank you Squidge for always giving me hope that England have a plan
Don't forget to enjoy the tournament. You don't sound so excited as you'd normally be given that it's begun!!Your content is excellent and has secured loyalty: we will watch lower quality through WC because it still is your content and because it's the WC! Experience it too.
It’s George Fords world and we’re just living in it. Gotta love a drop goal
Good luck with the videos and copyright! It's been a cracking world cup so far.
How people will be able to counter Ford dropping goals from halfway I'm struggling to figure out.
George Ford had a once-in-a-career performance last Saturday, where everything he touched turned to gold. I doubt he'll be sinking drop goals from halfway against Japan this weekend.
@@alexpotts6520 doubtful, England's best 10 by a mile, he's been doing it at club level, now international. If anything they can do it more against Japan as England's forwards should be able to dominate easier to get him set up in front of the posts. Though I do doubt we'll see as much of it, England will be using Japan to test their attacking game which we saw none of last match.
Also worried with what Squidge suggested about the England fitness, Wales could be in trouble if they can outmuscle us for the full 80!
What about targetting Ford on defense and running at him on every chances they get?
I doubt he can make 50 m drop goals beaten up, broken down and tired as hell.
That then creates space elsewhere
@@andrasszabo1570 fair point, but like the next person said, space elsewhere, and can you really get near him with a set up that strong with England just playing ball retention rugby rather than attacking rugby?
Bru, you are easily the best rugby analyst on earth. I look forward to every breakdown and kudos for pulling such gold out of restrictive circumstances.
A proud Saffa and rugby fan.
Can we get a "How did Wales beat Fiji" video which is just you saying "luck"
You spelt "ref" wrong
Is "luck" Matt Carley's nickname?
@@saoirsedeltufo7436 Going to stick my neck on the line here: Matt Carley got one call wrong in the entire game - not carding Wales when they gave away several penalties in a row near their own tryline; and even then he "evened it up" by giving a yellow for a totally random penalty on the halfway line a few minutes later.
Those two disallowed Fijian tries - yes, they were both knock-ons! Fiji had their chances to win the game but it's not the referee's fault they didn't take them.
@@alexpotts6520first disallowed try happened due to Wales hooker doing a no arms tackle to the players knees. Check it again.
@@alexpotts6520 He didn't "even it up", because he then proceeded to allow another three or four Welsh penalties on their try line with no further cards. He copped out.
How does World Rugby still not realize that Sir Squidge is one of their greatest (and hands down least costliest) marketers?
They are greedy
I'm very excited to hear squidge talk more about Uruguay after last nights game. I was defending them as still being a threath last week and really felt justified about that after the strong showing against France!
Awesome video, to bad about the copyright issues with video.
Massive disappointment at this copyright issue! Such a nuisance. But did a phenomenal job nonetheless. Cheers for the quality content as always, incredibly insightful and entertaining.
Thank you for the video, Squidgy!! The copy right situation is so unbelievably frustrating, thank you for still trying your best, WE APPRECIATE YOU
I think I’ll remember for a long time the thrill in his teammates, the whole stadium and myself in front of my TV when Ford nailed the first drop goal. He took leadership on a hectic and diminished team, focused its energy, delivered and made them believe in themselves. And I’m pretty sure everyone watching felt that. What a player, what a leader
Knowing the care and passion you guys put in the videos, it's a true shame you are limited and blocked like that. Good luck for the rest, and more importantly, enjoy France and the tournament ! Btw, will you be in Paris for the quarter finals weekend ? We'll maybe have a casual touch rugby in a park for a friends birthday
Great effort I'd say given the limitations. The analysis still holds, so thanks for making the effort.
Thank you for all your effort, bad that World Rugby was not clear before the tournament what is possible. I hope you find that fine line and can pump out the amazing videos again
Cheika selected a winger to play flyhalf. Mind blowing. When you have someone experienced like Sanchez not even in the match day squad. Also not including the Jaguares center duo, Moroni and de la fuente is a shame.
Carreras cost them
Squidge! sending some encouragement man. I know it sucks when things dont work out as planned. but the video was still tops and you are still fantastic! Hope you're taking time to enjoy France!
Good luck mate ! I absolutly love the energy and passion you put in these videos and I will stand behind you, whatever content you manage to get out 😉
You are part of one of the joy of international rugby Squidge, it's a shame they limit your awesom work. Hang in there, World Rugby don't know what they missing (i think they do and that's the worst part).
Limitations aside, that was great. As illuminating and thought-provoking as ever. Thank you!
Thanks for doing whatever it takes to get us a video!
World rugby should be paying you and giving you whatever you need
Keep it up squidge! Still the best analysis out there! Appreciate you effort!
Lovely stuff, as ever. Always finding a way to make this beautiful sport more poetic and accessible (often against the odds). Thanks for the tourno this weekend, too - such a fun way to start our France trip! 🤩
The stop start nature of the stills is how we usually watch a Squidge video... pausing all the time to read the witty comments. I liked the format, worked for me.
KEEP UP THE AMAZING WORK!!!! BEST RUGBY ANALYTICS ON CZcams.
love your rugby vids dont stop ever please
Thanks for still producing excellent content despite having to overcome ridiculous hurdles.
It seems like World Rugby is doing everything to try and stop itself from growing !
Video was still great! Going to be watching them all!
Come on Ireland!
Squidge full credit for sticking at it! No-one else has your commitment to this content.
I'm more than fine with the video format, if anything, I want more annotated stills. Your insight was always the star of the show
Sorry that World Rugby are making this much harder for you Squidge hopefully something gets sorted soon; appreciate the video!
Cheika his own worst enemy not selecting a proper flyhalf
This video is a great example of grace under pressure and adaptation to circumstances - thanks, Squidge. I learned something (as usual) though it would have been so much better (and more joke filled) if you could have made the pictures move. Someone needs to show World Rugby all the vieo game streamers on Twitch and how they ENLARGE their games rather than diminishing them . . .
Is there anyone we can contact to try and help get you seen and allowed to use actual match clips?
Like if worldrugby received 200 emails asking for Squidge to be allowed show match clips would that work?
Thanks for not only your normal great contextual commentary but an excellent job in the face of adversity.
Well done Squidge, well done World Rugby on taking a step back.
The droppie is the most underused weapon in rugby. Once Ford hit his third to make it 12-3 the game was truly in the hands of England. Tom Mitchell, who is great, expressed disappointment they didn’t go for the try. Bollocks this is cup rugby and Ford played it brilliantly.
I was lucky enough to play with a 10 who could do that, a rarity in rugby, let alone eastern Canadian rugby, and all the rest of us had to do was smash people while he won us cups and kept us in games
Nice jersey Squidge have fun at touch
Good luck man, will always support your channel as I love your game analysis videos.
To be honest I actually appreciate the image being still when you are discribing the positioning because it's easier to see the shape of what you are talking about without everyone moving around.
Michael cheika didn't select Nicholas Sanchez on 10. Cost them massively.
He didn't even take Tomas Albornoz!
@edwardandrews9090 yeah also no Orlando. One of the best centers out there
Great job Robbie! always a delight to hear your perspective on the rugby... Let more rugby!!! I hope the world cup works with you.
Ive always followed international rughy but never followed it closely until i stumbled across your channel. Please keep making these videos, for a non rugby player who still massovely enjoys warching your channel is absolutely fantastic! Hoepfully you can get around these issies because your content rocks!
Best rugby analysis available anywhere
Amazing effort Squidge given the limitations available, barely noticed there weren't any videos!
Those minutes that Ford starting hitting those drop goals my hopes rose out of the bottomless pit it had fallen into
NO SANCHEZ, NO PARTY
this video was worth it for the George Ford impression alone!
Thanks for doing such a good job of analysis even in this situation. Great video
The amount of work you put into these is amazing
When the world and rugby world cup needed squidge most! He`s uploaded :P
Really looking forward to your next vid
Nobody does them like you.
Squidge finding a way to make a video is very apt.
Sorry about your copyright issues. I really enjoy your refiews snd hope world rugby comes to their senses.
Some great analysis as always Squidge - I don't see eye-to-eye with you on Ford most of the time but he was utterly sensational at the weekend and thoroughly deserves all the praise he gets.
Great work big fella!
World Rugby: we want to share Rugby and share the wonderful sport with as many people as possible
Also world Rugby: Did I just catch showing Rugby to the world!!!😤😤
Your videos are awesome, as always!! Hopefully we get the footage soon. Cheers from the US
Thank you squidge!
😊
World Rugby slowly strangling the life out of the sport
awesome stuff as ever
I think the Argentina drop goal attempt was very telling about how much England and the drop goals was getting under their skin
On the plus side, working with stills opens up a door to an entire world of comedic possibilities. Good luck with the rest of the competition mate and don't forget to enjoy some of it!
Thanks Rob
I actually liked the stills - easier for me to follow! ME that is. A random person on the internet. Thanks Squidge for everything you do!
Argentina played the worst game of rugby ever.
5:33 good to see Squidge making some analysis Clive Woodward would appreciate (but seriously, it's pretty amazing he's putting out video analysis with no video)
Excellent (as usual)
Argentina played without a flyhalf.
So it was 14 vs 14.
I think it was a very smart performance by England. Yes, it was probably a limited game plan and I don't think they'll win a World Cup playing that way. But it got them through a difficult, important match and relatively comfortably in the end. I think it was a Ford masterclass
Not cool man, I was barely starting to forget and look forward to the next match
good luck with the new rules
I'm such a fan of your work...
"This still is more dynamic than the carry" killed me 😂
How has it been 4 years and we're still not passed this?
“Minutes later Daly goes for goal from…Spain” killed me.
Good luck with the video, you did an amazing job, it is still really good without real footage.
Honestly the still images were very helpful still. Not as good as live footage but still very precious
Sorry about the footage nightmare squidgy, great video 👍🏻
Was thinking *during the game* of the upcoming Squidge video on St George
The Poms are about to dropkick their way to another Rugby World Cup. Perfect for a nation of dropkicks.
Hang in there Squidge. Sorry to hear about world rugby giving you the runaround.
I can't remember the last time I saw a more embarrassing performance by a test side than this Argentina. Pivac's Wales were at least trying to do something, Borthwick's England had the excuse of not having a lot of time. This argentina team has loads of talent and a year and a half to prepare for the WRC and this is the best they could come up with in the most important match of a clearly winnable pool. Absolutely shameful, especially considering how Uruguay and Chile actually did show up.
Hey Squidge ! I'm sure you already saw some videos like this but just in case it helps : I saw video analysis from french youtubers using world rugby material by mirroring the image (and probably using shorter cuts ?) and it seems to do the trick.
Top content as ever. Thanks bach
I love Squidge Rugby. No bias, no nationalistic tub thumping just analysis. I have learnt more in 5 minutes than in endless Quinlan, Jiffy or Guscott one eyed rubbish. Thanks ❤
Wrong team selection from Cheika and England took advantage
i actually started rugby after watching one of your videos so its a bit silly not letting you use footage cuz you actually grow the game.
Interesting that you thought other teams would be able to work them out now that they have shown the DG card. I figured it would help England's attack chances by always having the opposition defence on notice that stops them covering the wider spaces
The still images were almost easier to follow :)
Le drop - the move, not the mascot.
The irb doing this with the footage actually Stunts the growth of the game
Bonus points were introduced to stop the kicking game…
Bloody hell Robbie! World rugby shooting themselves in the foot AGAIN? Thank you for this- it explains why they didn't try drop goals against Japan. George Ford is the answer!
Carreras never orchestrated the backline. His natural position is wing not flyhalf. Sanchez should've played.
Fair play to George Ford for taking the game by the scruff of the neck, but let's be honest. If he'd kicked all of those drop goals wide, the Pumas probably would've done everything they could to rip up the posts and move them so the kick would sail through. I can't remember the last time I saw a team just doing everything they could to lose, I was so disappointed watching that game.
Go to the Floridian in the square, lovely place.
Great video in the face of adversity.
As soon as Tom went off England could abandon any pretence of attack, and quite legitimately take the points on offer, and they did brilliantly
Ah man, I was in nice, would have loved a chuck around, just catching up on CZcams on getting back to the UK 🤦
