14 Days Solo Camping in the Yukon Wilderness - E. 1 - Outfitting & Bush Plane Drop Off

The Yukon holds some of the World’s last large expanses of wilderness. It’s, brave wilderness - deep backcountry camping, remote wild camping in the full sense of the word as it’s well off grid and far from the road system. This is episode 1 of my documentary series about my survival in the woods where I’m truly alone in the wild and exploring the Yukon. After bush flying into a remote mountain lake, I head out solo camping and fishing on a wilderness travel adventure for fourteen days by canoe. On the trip, I paddle the advanced level whitewater of the Hess River and then follow the Stewart River, completing the trip some 400 kilometres later in the community of Mayo. On this adventure, I catch Arctic Graylings and Lake Trout. What’s better than catching wild Trout for a catch and cook over the fire while in the Yukon? I also find a remote traditionally-built trappers log cabin, run multiple whitewater rapids, undertake long, bushwhacked portages and see a lot of wildlife.
The Yukon is a place where dreams are made and where adventurers have been going to follow their dreams since the Klondike gold rush in the 1880s. As much as anyone, I went there to follow my dreams and they became a reality.

Thanks a lot for watching the video. This was an amazing trip and adventure through a seldom seen wilderness. Don’t forget to subscribe to my channel to catch the rest of the episodes from this series and more!
@Our Alaska Cabin Hey Big thanks, ya it sure is...similar to much of AK too. Love that part of the world, to say the least.
Great video, I can't wait to see the rest. What time of year did you go June?
It was July but the Hess is always that colour. Makes it very challenging to see the rocks!
I think it’s that color because of the proximity of Keele Ice Cap, up river it’s clear. Not sure but I think that’s why.
I just started watching your video.
I have fished for thirty years out of a canoe. Half the time by myself. And I have done 4 solo canoe trips.
My advice. Get yourself a kayak paddle that can convert to two canoe paddles.
Kayak paddle is so much more efficient than J stocking every other stroke.
Don't you just love it when youtube recommends something really interesting......
I do 👍 thanks
To be alone in a canoe surrounded by those mountains. Priceless
Excellent start. I really appreciated your comment at the end of day one as you were setting up camp that you were feeling into the trip, less jittery than before heading out. I am the same way. We did a 16 day canoe trip in 2002 in the Yukon with my son and best friend. While I was very excited about doing the trip, there is something about the anticipation anxiety that flows away once you are on the water and in the wild.
I love the Yukon, but have not been back since 2002. Due to easier logistics and less available time, we have substituted taking a tandem sea kayak out in SE Alaska (with off year trips to Kodiak Island and Lake Clark). My long range canoe trips the last few years have been to warmer climes, the Buffalo River in Arkansas and the Rio Grande in Texas. You do a great job editing the massive amount of video that you must take during the trip. Great production (I enjoy that part too). Looking forward to seeing you negotiate the Hess.
Best regards,
Clark
Thanks a lot for that! This was a greasy trip for sure. Southeast AK is amazing. I paddled the Stikine and spent some tome camping in that northern rainforest. Then took the ferry up to Skag. Would love to go down the rio grand too
Yeaaaaaahhhhh
Thanks Ted!!
Wow!! Watching U takes me back....I love the Yukon. I think Ur very brave!..anything I did on rivers was with alotta men around - which made me feel confident in their abilities. I'm a 73 yr old female,& was in an Eastman Kodak Documentary on the Yukon. I was a city girl & loved every min of it!@ - & the Yukon!! Grrrreat memories!!! Thank U or a relive!!
That’s awesome!! Glad I can help bring those memories back! Thanks for watching

Cheers Jim! 😁
Great series. Very enjoyable. You are a true outdoorsman and brave. Thanks for sharing.
Great, what an adventure, at 66 years old I am envious, keep it up Jim enjoy it all as well as you awsome family. To bad tori and the baby aren't with you.
I know right! This one might be a good one for the baby to sit out though. It’s pretty advanced. Thanks for the comment! I know remains people paddle rivers in the Yukon into their 70s for sure but usually go with rivers that sent as much as a handful as the Hess.
Stunning country!
It truly is, thanks.

Cool edit thxs for sharing your journey.
I've watched a lot of survival videos and been disappointed by the lack of either toughness, intelligence or they just weren't entertaining. Jim, you are all three of these things and I take my hat off to you. I look forward to your future videos!!
Yep, beats the hell out of Iowa for sure.
Looking forward to the rest
Amazing! Great video!
That is some spectacular footage there! What a true adventure. Thank you for sharing.
No problem! Thanks a lot for watching. It was indeed an amazing adventure and experience on the whole. I have e2 if this trips up on my channel as well and e3 will be up tomorrow if you want to catch them. Have a great day!

Yay finally. My day is made. Great start. The flight in is amazing.
thank you so much. That makes total sense.
Removing the Esquif stickers of a Competitors Canoe and adding Nova Craft stickers Takes on a whole new meaning to the term “Outfitting a Canoe”
Beautiful country up there in the Yukon
Oh man, it’s unreal
What an amazing start to what looks like an epic adventure. Lookin forward to watching the next episodes. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks a lot and you’re very welcome!
This was amazing. Can't wait to watch other episodes!!
Thanks a lot! I have ep 2 & 3 up now.
Proper wilderness! and a proper adventure to boot. Looking forward to seeing the next instalment. Greetings from England.
hey Jim you make super super good job congratulations you numero uno
Thank you very much!
that would be lots of fun and freedom and happiness... love it..
I dont understand why we campers dont invent lightweight, all terrain, collapsible wheel system that straps to the canoe, so it can be pulled rather than all the trips back and forth. I've often wondered that, anyhow, on long portages in algonquin. You guys are awesome people, I love watching these videos, it's like we are there with you. Definitely found your calling. All of you.💚🇨🇦👣🏕🏔🛶🚁🔥🇨🇦🤘
I think there are s couple options out there like that. On this bushwhack it wouldn’t have worked well though because the ground was so uneven and there were bushes everywhere but on some portages they’re perfect!
that's ruff truckin' buddy! like the way you overcame the obstacle of those rapids.
awesome adventure you're brave!
Great trip/video. Thanks for bringing us along.
Holy crap JB... you are hardcore Brother! I couldn't help but be nervous if you lost that line and the canoe just
rolled on without you. (Hooped) What a epic trip your doing Man... very cool that you got to parallel the river on
the flight in to kind of get a feel for the paddle. Love the Nova Craft straps you brought too! The skirt should be
a great help on the trip too! Just epicness at it's finest JB... look forward to the rest of this trip! Cheers Big Guy!
Big thanks! It was a little scary flying over part of the river and seeing all those boulder-strewn rapids. The spay deck is pretty much a must for running these northern rivers with rapids when you have a loaded boat. Things will get a little more interesting on the navigation side in the days to come. Thanks a lot for checking it out!
Hi. I lived in Whitehorse for 11 years and drove the mail to Mayo for 4 of those. Wonderful to see it again. Thanks
No problem, awesome part of the world it is there. Thanks for watching!
Simply amazing…
Thanks
Awesome Part 1, on to Part 2! Thanks for sharing!
You’re welcome!
Wow. Beautiful area and the scenery fantastic.
What a great adventure. Looking forward to watching more.
Totally awesome trip!
Hey Kevin! thanks a lot for dropping by and checking it out.
Great to see you post another canoe trip Jim, have been looking forward to another of your adventures and you didn’t disappoint. Thanks for posting.
No problem, this was such a great canoe trip too 👍
With my old 1970's Grey Owl Cherrywood Paddle in my hand I'm watching all of your stuff Jim. Awesome.
Great paddle
@@JimBairdAdventurer I've had it since the 70's and my canoe is from the same era. A very tough cedar strip varnish "LakeField" with oak ribs, no canvas. Its seen a few rocks thou. Trouble is I have to soak it under the lawn sprinkler for a few days to swell her up. I only use it for a couple of weeks a year now. anyhow Awesome VLOGS bud.
That is a great canoe! My buddies dad had something similar and ended up covering it in fibreglass which was a bit of a shame but made like easier when going to use it. Thanks a lot for checking out the vids!! I’m glad you like them.
@@JimBairdAdventurer With the full keel it tracks very well in windy conditions. Not so great in the river. But still a surprisingly fast and tough boat when it comes to scraping over rocks etc. Very fast.
Very cool. Looking forward to the rest of it!
Wow Jim, I can already tell that this is going to be a great series to watch. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us, cheers.
Awesome Jim! You are an inspiration to every outdoor enthusiast.
Thanks a lot! Glad you’re liking it.

BREATHTAKING BEAUTY COLORS SCENERY VIEWS VIDEO ! AWESOME ! THANK YOU ! BE SAFE ! HAVE FUN ! GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS ! ENJOYED !
👍
Fantastic video!! Gods Country!! Simply beautiful. Love your music as well as letting us hear the airplance was awesome. My sister back in the 90's when she was short work being an accountant in her own business she drove from Parrsboro, Nova Scotia to the White Horse, Yukon looking for work for a year. My sister had a friend in where she stayed. My sister did find work in driving bus and ambularnce driving.
When she was younger she used to do Lobster fishing (dangerous work) when accounting business and private home care nursing was slow. That was tougher then the two jobs in White Horse for sure.
That’s a pretty cool story about your sister and an awesome road trip.
Definately epic!
i canoed the yukon from mayo landing to Dawson way back it was only 265 miles but i took 8 days cuz i stopped alot and went exploring one day i went 20 miles up the canadian creek road i have fond memories
Just awesome, it’s still a frontier most of it. Pretty special place
Another great video to Chrome cast to my large tv soon. I can't wait to see it. Oh I seen this one. Duh me. Well I'm watching it again. Beautiful!!!

Thanks great man welcome! and thanks for checking it out!
Awesome. Can't wait for more
Fantastic video!
Wicked episode Jim. I look forward to the rest of the series.
Thanks a lot! Gunna get it up next week.
There's a great many things I appreciate and admire about your videos, not the least of which are the production qualities of the video and audio, but most of all, I love that you take the time to explain and teach. Your videos could so easily be limited to gratuitous showing-off because of the difficulty and remoteness of your adventures and your skill level, but you take the time to impart information that is important for all who are less experienced. One comes away from your content, not merely inspired, but better informed.
Thanks for that.
Cheers,
- Martin
Wow, thanks a lot Martin! I guess I don’t get into showing off because honestly, I don’t really think I’m that good. And, I’m pretty nervous going into trips like this but I suppose I am good at mustering the courage and have always had confidence in the outdoors. This is great to hear and I’m really glad you’re enjoying the vids and getting some take homes from them. Thanks for the encouragement and inspiration!
Hey Jim new to the channel absolutely love it Way! Way! Better than regular TV awesome family I'm hooked thanks Earl 👍🍻🇺🇲
Awesome man, thanks so much for subbing and checking out the vids. Pumped that you like ‘me. Thanks for the comment!

Greetings to you as well and thanks! Glad you liked it.
so cool!
Thanks a lot! There are seven episodes of this out and the final one of this series I’ll get up tomorrow.
Just finished your trip don the Hess and Stewart to Mayo. Excellent and very well put together. I do a lot of solo camping and fishing trips in BC and I'm relieved to discover I'm not the only one who talks to himself in the bush - even if only to my camera. Thank you for the ride along! Breakfast of Champignons -Aaaahgh!
Haha, glad you liked that one. I don’t think I prefer going alone but it’s definitely a good experience once in a while.
Looks like a it was a nice adventure ! An experience of a lifetime ..
The only thing that canoe was missing was a motor, jk. Excited to watch the rest of this series
Hahaha, nice man, enjoy!
Giant balls my freind!
That was worth the wait. Great way to spend my lunch break watching this video.
This is such a cool solo trip! Watching makes me want to get into canoeing
Thanks a lot! Ya, the canoe can take you some amazing places. For me, it’s really not about the canoe, it’s about where it takes you.
Just found this channel! What a great way to spend your days! Thanks so much for taking us in your afventures!
Thanks a lot for coming over and no problem, my pleasure!

been up here quite a few times passing through on my way to work in the mines, the wonder of this area is amazing, i hope to return to do some exploring, fishing, and canoeing, me and a couple of buddies were gonna do a day tour with these folks at up north, but, we got sidetracked...lol, but your adventure is off the charts, well done sir!!
wow! very nice.. look forward to E2. thank you for sharing your adventure
Dang you Jim, I got that little dity you were singing stuck in my head, "a dryin' rack a dryin' rack"!
Hahah....”what we need for the drying rack....” my one year old son has a toy that plays that tune and injures it was stuck in my head too.
Epic for sure! Great video! Looking forward to more! Stay safe!

Brilliantly made and what a epic adventure Jim - such a brave guy. Torre must be so proud of you and your parents too. The views are spectacular altogether!! Wowsers and filmed just amazing and the colours of the waters.

I salute you good sir! Statue at the beggining was awesome.
👍 thank you! I agree, like there I was traveling to the Yukon following my dreams and there was a freakin statue waiting to to commemorate me. Gave me goosebumps.
Wow super interesting!! Beautiful scenery!! I can't wait to see the next video! It left us saying ah we wanted a longer video. lol
Awesome video
Beautiful there
Good golly, what beauty!
this summer i solo bonnet plume 15 days walked less then 300 feet great fun beautiful river! I was thinking of Soloing Hess next year 2020
But i used a smaller boat supernova
Nice! I want to paddle the Bonnet Plume one of these years myself. The Supernova would be great, I’ve tried one out before. It’s a little small for my size personally but fun.
Looks like another awesome journey!
Wow!!! Just wow!! This is how life should be!!! Have a dream, plan it out, and go freakin do it!!!! An absolute inspiration to go along with the beauty. Gladly subscribed!!
Glad you’re inspired! Thanks for the encouraging comment and glad you like the vids!
