  • Howard Zane has shown us on the channel how he pastel weathered 2 steam locomotives. Now he shows us how he weathered my F7diesels. These techniques can be applied to any diesel engine. Practice makes perfect so you might want to try this with an inexpensive piece first for practice. Obviously, we cant guarantee your results but with practice one can achieve the desired appearance needed.

@@alpugliesetrains9753 I'm anxious to see the difference between them and traditional chalk powders.

I've found with the pan pastels that matt varnish will seal them on. One thing about that is it dilutes them and they don't show up as well. So instead of trying to make it very heavy all at once I'll put them on in layers to build up the color and a little more if it gets diluted by the varnish. Put on one color and seal it so it won't wipe off and then add more after the varnish dries so they'll show up better or go to the next color then seal it and so on until you're satisfied. The biggest tip I could give is to add them lightly in layers and build them up to what you want. Don't go heavy with any products you're using to weather with be it paint or powders. If you put it on all at once you can get too much but the pan pastels are very forgiving and can be cleaned off with a wet paper towel, not dripping; and damp toothbrush if you get too much then you can try again. Build up layers of one color slowly then seal it and go to the next color. I'll wait at least 2 hours for the varnish to dry between colors. Oh and spray the varnish on very lightly as well, just enough to seal the pastels. It will completely wash the color off if you spray it too heavily by the slightest bit. So it only takes a little bit to seal them. It will always dilute the color some but you can always add more. Slowly build up in light layers as your doing each color. 👍

Looks great, weathering makes huge difference. Can’t wait to see those running Al. I would throw a coat of Dull Cote on them to keep pastels off your hands, but not to heavy or it lightens the pastels.
