My dad was diagnosed with cancer and his medication was a little more $10,000 dollar per month, he died 3 months later because the health insurance didn’t cover the cost of the medication.

@@robbinsnest6163lol he’s obviously exaggerating but he’s not too far off honestly.. for ex. Ambulances are forced to take you but the min. cost of alone is 7-8k without insurance. Hospitals are only liable to keep you alive and stable enough but will kick you out right after even if ur having difficulties standing. Theres 100s of stories about hospitals forcing ppl out or literally walk a patient off hospital property and drop them off.. it’s fckd up here in America man.

As a disabled American who is very sick, I can confirm that this is the reality we still live with. I am unable to work a traditional job and therefore don't get any sort of insurance through an employer, and can't afford it on my own. I don't get disability benefits either, because the government has ridiculous amounts of red tape and legal loopholes to avoid giving help to people who genuinely need it. The only help I get from the government is food stamps, otherwise I'm left to deal with my multiple conditions on my own even though I'm physically incapable of working a regular job. Fortunately I found a work from home gig that pays well this year, so my quality of life is improving, but I spent about 10 years barely hanging on with minimal treatment for my conditions and living off my family. It's been very difficult. I can't imagine how I would react to watching my child go through what I've gone through. I don't have any kids (because I didn't get treatment for years, I essentially missed out on the period of my life when I would have had children), but I imagine it would be unbearable to watch them suffer.
To answer your specific question: if you don't have money or insurance, they absolutely will turn you away at the hospital. Like the guy in the movie said, they just have to stabilize someone and then they can kick them out. It's happened to me plenty of times. Last time was I for vomiting for days until I was so dehydrated that I was having seizures, they just gave me IV fluids to stabilize me and then kicked me out without treating the underlying problem of twisted ovarian cysts, which I'm still dealing with years later because I can't afford the surgery. I am in need of 2 surgeries and a biopsy but can't afford them. So, I just live with the symptoms. It's pretty crappy most of the time, to be honest. I try to stay positive and still enjoy life, but I do have some really rough days, and my good days are rare. Today's a pretty good day, though, so there is that! :)
As for the movie, it's not based on a true story, but I believe it was inspired by a man who attempted to rob a bank to pay for his child's medical bills, which is absolutely heartbreaking. I think the movie didn't do very well, and was called "manipulative," but I think it's a great movie with a phenomenal cast. Everyone in it was awesome.
I had insurance and was still sent home with an ovarian torsion. Then had to be sent back as soon as my doctor got the report. They just monitored it instead of removing it. Ive had 37 documented cysts some smallish some the size of a tennis ball. I bled for 1 year straight. They did blood transfusion but never tried to find out why I was bleeding. I was bleeding because my IUD i begged for them to remove vecause I was in constant pain since it'd been implanted was suprise, implanted incorrectly. It was embedded in my service after being clamped onto it with the t part during insertion. So it held my cervix open the entire time. I've had 5 surgeries to remove cysts and growths in my uterus. They still won't do a hysterectomy because I'm 30. I've begged cried and pleaded. I have PCOS and endometriosis. I've had 2 kids and 5 miscarriages. They removed my tubes because of growths/cancer risks and said usually the cancer starts there but won't take anything else out. So whether you have insurance or the money or not the healthcare system here is HORRIFIC for women's health and I am so sorry you're going through that. Congrats on the job.

I saw this movie as a kid. Now as an adult, after having worked as a social worker in the Healthcare system for a time, it hits differently. The scenes of John getting denied at every turn, being shuffled to the next person and then to be told he did the wrong paperwork infuriates me. Its so crushingly realistic.

As to your question, average income tax in the US is 14%. Health care is still crazy expensive and most people have health insurance through their employer.
Nobody does it like Denzel. I literally, went through a whole box of tissues watching this with you guys. Also, off subject, I love Jane's straw! I need one. Healthcare here in America, is exactly the same. They definitely tell you to go on welfare if you can't afford it. Even if you work hard and can afford it, you still end up paying out of pocket for certain situations (much like this movie). I stopped paying for insurance a long time ago when I found this out. Everything is a money grab. You guys are so blessed.
I was paying 250/mth for mine, only to be told I needed to pay more after all my procedures and tests. Make it make sense. I still suffer but I'd rather die than allow some money hungry insurance companies take from me. There needs to be a change.

While not strictly 'true' per se, it was based on a similar event that took place in Toronto, Canada, in 1999. Henry Masuka rushed his son to the ER because he was having an asthma attack. The receptionist told him that there was no paediatrician on duty so he would have to wait 45 minutes. Panicking Henry pulled a gun and took the doctor on duty hostage. In the end, after a standoff, he was shot by police and later died in police custody. So, not the Hollywood ending.
Like I mentioned before, this should have been Denzel's Oscar. Training Day was not his best work at all.

@@firegod001 Right, that entire film should've got laced with Oscars for real. Denzel actually spent time with Malcolm's brothers and sisters, he learned to speak Arabic and took on a Muslim diet for that role.

In the movie, John Q was moved from full time to part time job. Which made changes to his insurance, including not covering the cost of the surgery. In real life, here in the US, most people who have part time jobs, don't qualify for benefits like health insurance. An old man once told me to get a job that offers benefits, because that means you will have good healthcare. If you have good healthcare, they will put you first and give you the best, but if you don't, they will put you at the bottom, or at the end of the line.
American health system is crazy with all their insurance. In my country it's included in our tax.

My grandmother has dementia and we tried to get a nurse for her since she can’t take care of herself anymore and insurance would only cover 5 hours a WEEK, not a day… we ended up having to put her in a nursing home and sell her house to cover the cost of the home.
I don't normally comment, but when I first saw this movie, I saw it with my son, who was around 10 or 11. I hugged him for so long and so hard after this movie that he said mom I can't breathe 😂. Love you guys! Check out "The Hurricane " and "Antoine Fisher" people seem to forget about those amazing Denzel movies.
52:16 it’s a nightmare. I have a heart issue and can’t even afford he medication to help with. So I just gets worse. And when I have a full time job with insurance, the cost will be higher because my condition will get worse while I can’t afford my meds.
My godmother passed away after a heart transplant from the surgeon, leaving some instruments in her chest. The hospital had to pay her daughter. They want your money to fix a problem, then they pay you money to forget their mistake, funny how that works.
This reminds me of that show Breaking Bad. Everyone hated Walter White. They all said he was evil and a criminal. Some said they couldn't stand him and just wanted to see him get arrested or die. Walter White and John Q are very similar men. Both are up against the wall and have to do something before its too late. Both take matters in to their own hands. When I watch Breaking Bad I see a great father that is willing to go to the depths of hell in the crime world at a great cost to himself in order to make the future better for his family. Walter White never took a long extended tip to Las Vegas where he was surrounded by young long legged busty women to boost his ego. He just worked and worked until he died. In my book he was a great father just like John Q.

There are a lot of Americans who can’t afford health insurance
It's so horrific to me that yanks have to even think about money at a time like that.
I watched this movie when it first came out and I was newly pregnant with my first son. I was emotional then. But watching this after my middle son was diagnosed with cancer at almost 12 (brain tumor), this movie is a really hard watch for me. I also had a sit down meeting just like that basically telling me chemo was no longer working for my son and if he didn't have the brain surgery to remove the tumor he would die. But initially surgery was off the table because it was too risky. We needed to do chemo first to try and shrink the tumor and it did but at some point it stopped working. There were points I had to fight the system too for him because I'll do anything for my boys. I mean honestly, if a movie was based on our experience, I feel it would be just as devastating because so many things happened and went wrong that we thought we were going to lose him on multiple occasions. A collapsed lung that ended up requiring surgery, a breathing apparatus and xrays EVERYDAY for about 2 weeks. And they would take it out but not give him enough time to try breathing on his own and just put it back. I fought with them until finally I took it out and got him breathing on his own. Which in turn got him to eating on his own without an NG tube (feeding tube). My baby couldn't talk, walk, eat or do anything on his own after that surgery. And there was a chance he may never walk or talk again. Speech therapy wasn't working. But I put a lot of music on for him and one day I heard a little sound next to me. He was trying to sing and it was coming out. I kept my cool and cried to myself later. The stories I could tell are insane. But I'm happy to report my son is now 17 and will be hitting year 5 of being cancer free in October but he is forever changed as there are lifelong effects from brain surgery and treatments. His vision, speech, fine/gross motor skills etc. But I'll take my baby anyway he is because he's still here ❤ Please advocate for your children because the doctors are not always right. As I told them, "you are an expert on the disease, I'm an expert on my son"
I always imagined John Q would be safe and unhassled during his prison stay because I can picture the toughest, meanest inmates and gang leaders telling the other prisoners "Most of us wouldn't be in here if we'd had the kind of father would would go to the lengths John Q went for his son, so it's hands off this guy." I think he would have been respected and protected.
Healthcare in America is definitely a scam. However, they are not going to deny you emergency care. You will just owe a million dollars! The doctors take an oath to do no harm. So to deny goes against their oath.

I love this movie as okay because john q, Remind me so much of my dad, How much he loved me and What he was willing to do to show that love.
I once had a woman come through my line at work, and during our conversation she asked me if I was going to go back to school. I told her I had zero plans to, and she started to talk about how important it was to get an education. I explained to her that I had a full time job with EXCELLENT benefits. If I go back to school, I have to reduce my hours at work. If I reduce my hours, I lose my insurance. If I lose my insurance, my medication goes from $0 a month to $400 a month. With reduced hours, I can't afford as much, which will make paying for my medication difficult. Without said medication, it would be a matter of days before I would find myself in the ICU, which I definitely wouldn't be able to afford. I both literally and figuratively can't afford to get a higher education, because doing so will put my life at risk. All this to say, both the education and medical system here are messed up. One bad accident can put someone in debt for the rest of their lives. Because of my insurance through my job, I'm one of the incredibly lucky ones.
Unfortunately, this movie depicts perfectly what happens in the US especially California. Money before the health of others. An ambulance ride to the hospital will eventually haunt you when you get hit with a $2,500 or more bill for that transportation. My husband recently went to the doctors and just for his opinion and a recommendation to go to the hospital (literally nothing done for him), they sent us a $477 bill. This is with insurance.

I remember thinking how this movie should have won Denzel his first oscar and should have been a the catalyst to a conversation on how everyone should have access to healthcare based of need I'm so thankful I'm Scottish and have free healthcare and prescriptions and a kid will never not get treated for there illness or injury

I work in the U.S. healthcare industry. As much as many Americans have indronidated to hate it. Medicare/Medicaid and the Affordable care act have saved more lives than private for profit insurance ever has.

16:10 From what I remember a grievance doesn't actually do anything it's just a complaint you can file a grievance with your insurance just because you feel a doctor or pharmacy was rude to you. Generally you'd submit an authorization request usually with help from the doctor then if that's denied an appeal but if the appeal in this case was approved that's the insurance saying they'll cover it(minus whatever copayment and deductibles you have).
If anything, I think things have gotten worse since this movie - but it did help spark conversation about the problems.
In the US, most folks’ federal taxes are either 12% or 22% (if you make 100k, it’s 24%).
I used to work in medical insurance, and it’s as sick and corrupt as you can imagine.
I can’t speak for other states, but in my state, there is a program to cover kids like the one in this movie (where the parents make too much money to get Medicaid but not enough money to afford private insurance), so the situation of a child going thru this in my state would be extremely rare.
But if you’re an adult and you can’t afford coverage, you’re screwed.
The ACA (aka Obamacare) helped a TINY bit, but not nearly enough 💔

This is the only Denzel movie I've ever seen
I'm surprised how quickly people are ready to dismiss the US system without any nuance. Is it perfect? no, we live in a capitalist society. Also, from personal experience, when i was 22 i attempted to leave this world by smashing my car going 70-80mph into a tree in PA.. (I don't remember any of this due to head trauma, but was told by police who were able to determine my speed etc looking at the skidmarks my car had left). I ended up breaking nearly my entire left side of my body b/c my little VW Cabrio (top down), apparently hit the tree in a way where it ended up doing a barrell roll 2x ending up leaving me and my car smashed down leftside down. I broke my femur in 2 places, shattered the left side of my hip so badly where initial X-Rays looks like the left of my hip and femur are just broken pieces of white floating around. My leg had completely "broken" apart from my hip on the inside. Those were the biggest physical trauma.. not including breaking 4 ribs, a small crack in my skull (which luckily didn't swell), and then just scratched and bruised as you could imagine.
As far as insurance, I was beyond the age of being covered under my parents excellent insurance as i had been before.. so I was only under my college insurance which only covered like 30K. I was in the ICU ward for 3 months requiring 5 MAJOR surgeries to put in a titanium rod into my femur, then 4 major surgeries cutting my hip apart just to slowly bind it back together using a billion screws and little plates etc.. and of course to reattach my leg back to my hip (something i was told that had i been in nearly any 2nd or 3rd world country, I'd have most likely lost the entire leg... The Doctors were excellent and the X-Rays today are crazy to look at). So when all was said and done, it took me a full year to even be able to walk again. As for my hospital bill.. I had one semester left to get my Masters with 0 loans taken out b/c I worked on top of school in order to never go into school debt. One moment of mental health lapse that was known about and i was medicated for, ended with a near 550k bill.. thats after the 30k my school paid. So i was 23 by that point, having spent my whole life working since 15 til my accident in order to pay for EVERYTHING myself, to suddenly owing 550 thousand dollars for something that happened due to a dissociative state i was diagnosed for/treated for/and cleared to drive for. I was thinking of literally fnishing my masters and moving out of the country.
A few months later, my mother let me know that some charity group that i couldn't even tell you the name of, that was specifically working with the hospital for patients specifically with mental health issues, had literally footed my entire bill. We hadn't even thought about reaching out for help bc despite my parents insurance not covering me, they are wealthy.. and they would never have sought out for money that could have benefitted someone in a much more dire situation than my with lesser wealth. It's actually very strange how little info we were given about this group. But we were able to find out that they somehow work in a similar way as an insurance company where they are given the ability to negotiate down hospital bills, so they didn't need to pay 550k, but something closer to 150k, which is an extremely large amount to just donate to someone they felt deserved it.
My point is, is there a problem? Absolutely. 550k for me, but only 150K for some adjacent specialty charity group who had the ability to negotiate hundreds of thousands of my bill down just to cover the actual essentials of my surgery plus, i hope, at least a passing amount of $ to the doctors and nurses who took care of me? that's absolutely insane. And I am extremely grateful to have been chosen for that charity i hadn't even asked for, after 6 months of being bedridden then 6 more to even attempt to add functionality back to my leg with all the muscle strength i had lost during that time to relearn how to walk again. However, it's also not as if my parents would've let me out to dry either.. so i do live with a sense of undeserving when i'm sure there are plenty of young adults with awful families who had also landed in a life/death situation without any money who maybe deserved my Case more than me.
The part that bothers me about this movie is the celebration of John Q for going as far as he did and not once thinking of the thousands of other kids that mightve been on the donor list for so long, and maybe one of them was also on their last moments waiting for that B+ heart. The system did his family dirty, but the civilian patients just like his son aren't the system, and one of them could have lost their life due to John Q taking an entire hospital hostage and forcing his son to not only get on the list, but due to urgency of the threat, jump ahead of the entire line and receive the immediate next available heart he needed. IDK. I feel it's easy to root for the John Q character here and think that he did the right thing when the camera is diving deep into only his family and his son.. but not even showing or mentioning a passing glance about the other innocent kids with families, waiting patiently for that next B+ heart to come asap before they lose their life. IDK. i used to root for this movie, but now i feel a strange ick about it. I'm able to understand how corrupted hospital pricing is out of pocket.. but I also think it's important to remember the patients aren't the system.. They're just like you and me.

It was different back in the '80s and '90s, but nowadays if you're overqualified they're just going to tell you. Hey, you're worth $30 an hour but we only can pay you $15.

Health care in America is horrific. But in some states, you cannot be be kicked off without any health care because it's based on how much you make. And anybody in America can buy into the Obamacare exchange and with government subsidies it's usually cheaper than job related insurance. I know my plan is cheaper so I buy into the exchange instead of buying into my jobs plan. Some states in America run by certain people refuse to accept government subsidies so that everyone who wants to be covered can be covered, which is stupid. But there is no reason that if Canada has universal health Care and so does most of Europe than the United States should have universal health Care as well but certain politicians and the people who vote for them refuse to want to be covered fully.

It’s always so interesting watching non-Americans react to our healthcare system.
I’m not gonna watch this reaction because I have no desire to cry hysterically for an hour tonight, but I love this damn movie so much I must give it a like! I can’t watch it again though lol
It’s the fact that any person has to do this for health care at all! Almost every developed country has some form of universal health care, except the USA. It’s actually so insane we put a middle man between us and our doctors and EVERYTHING is all about profits. Always. It’s sickening, pun intended.
This movie is a great example on how the insurance business in the USA is a giant shit-hole, every other country on the face of the earth uses socialized medicine...
I’m really surprised out of all the early 00s films that have gained a new audience due to the pandemic, I’m surprised this one hasn’t. The fact there are tens of millions of Americans working regular, day to day jobs who if something like this happened right now, it’d literally break entire generations of families financially, especially minorities
This movie was made over 20 years ago and sad to say, America's health system has not changed much since movie. Just a few days ago, there was a FedEx driver who suffered a heart attack while at work. Fortunately he survived, but he now needs a heart monitor implant to maintain his heart beat. To pay for it, he has to relay on gofundme to raise the money. That is the reality of America's health system.
A really great movie, Denzel greatest movie in my mind. I did not know you reacted to it.
I was lucky enough to see an advanced screening of this movie in late 2001. It was the first movie that I saw in theaters after 9/11. There wasn't a dry eye in the audience. But when it was released, it was a little bit of a dud. It made it's money back, but wasn't as big as expected. The critics hated it. I'm happy to see people reacting to it, because I still see it as one of Denzel's best performances.

Don’t think this was based off a true story but there is a story of someone barricading himself in the room so they wouldn’t take his son off life support.

I didn't know you guys were in Canada so as HARD as it hitsbus American parents, to be unaware of the situation they would tace with insurance made this a double whammy for you guys! I had to wait to watch this until i could freely bawl my eyes out.

LOL over 70 percent in the US are religious and it's the same in Canada. Stop with the persecution complex please. Only a quarter of people identify as secular and that doesn't even mean they don't believe in god. Religious people can be secular as well. So it could be as little as 10 percent or less that don't believe in god. I don't even think I met another atheist face to face.
Healthcare in America is atrocious.
I got hit in the face with a foul ball during a baseball game. 4 hours in the Emergency Room. About 10 minutes of a doctor actually observing my nose, he said and I quote: “Well, that’s what I expected, it’s shattered so there’s nothing we can do.” And then we get a bill for around $1,000 yeah, for a doctor to say, “put some ice on it, it’ll help the swelling go down.”
On another occasion a few years later, I was experiencing extreme pain on the left side of my back, it definitely wasn’t muscle pain. I tried to endure it for about 12 hours before I finally gave in and admitted that I needed to go to the hospital. The people at the hospital (the workers, not the other people there) basically looked at me and thought I was faking my pain to get pills. (It was in North Dakota where there were a lot of people coming into the hospital due to withdrawals so they basically pinned me as just another junkie) after 6 hours in the waiting room (I don’t call it the emergency room anymore) I finally get to a room. They asked me about 4 or 5 times what drugs I had taken. I told them the truth: “I smoke weed and drink on the weekends that’s it.” My mom was in the room and didn’t like my response but it was the truth, they then asked me, what other drugs have you taken and I aggressively responded with: “I don’t take pills! I smoke weed every day and drink at parties!” They still didn’t believe me.
They eventually put iodine into my veins to see if there was a problem. And guess what they found. Yeah, my left kidney had swollen to 3-4x than it should have been. And that’s what was causing my pain.
All they did was diagnose what was wrong with my kidney.
And here’s a bill for $12,000 after we thought you were a junkie who just wanted pain meds.
Side note: they didn’t even fix anything. It was $12,000 just to diagnose the congenital defect. (Meaning I was born with it)
