    This hobby of ours is quite the roller-coaster experience. Would you call my obsession with chasing original watch designs a pathological one? Is admitting that I have a problem the first step towards recovery? So many questions! ;) 🥃

      Perfectly understand your obsession with originals .. only thing I'm asking myself about your collection, as far as I know it, and mine, whether it's a bit redundant.. why not adding a say Reverso Chronograph or any other dress watch?

      @ID-Guy  Před 9 měsíci +4

      Was having this conversation with a buddy this week. He said, "man, you should be going after a Reverso 1931" and he's absolutely right 😆 Boils down to finances obviously (I've been extremely lucky finding most pieces at prices waaay under retail) but then its maybe my age, I'm not that driven to pursue a dress piece just yet. Seeing what JLC is doing with their Reverso's though... that skeleton chrono. Talk about an update! 🔥@@user-cg7tw5yc9n

      Thank you for voicing your desire to obtain original watch designs. I have been thinking the same thing about myself. There are so many watches to choose from but not many that embody something original. I find that having this mindset helps me separate the wheat from the chaff (hopefully I used that saying correctly…). Great video. You have become a favorite content creator of mine since I started down this silly watch rabbit hole a year ago.

    Great review! I couldn’t agree more. My SJE093 is one of seven in my well curated collection and I enjoy it as much as my Daytona and Cal. 321 Speedy. When you compare its price to these two it’s a bargain. Cheers 🍻

      Build quality is just exceptional. And it's the small things like how they've addressed the crystal, crown, plots... man. It's such a great package. Also love reading how your "tight" collection has a piece like this in it. Stellar! Thank you for sharing Scott 🥃

    Great to hear this review, after and slightly in spite of your previous review of the SJE093 I bought this wonderful time piece about a month ago. I’ve had half a dozen Omega Seamasters (no co-axials), currently I’ve got a Seamaster 2254.50 & a Seiko SPB143. I’m parting with
    them. The SJE093 is the one. Thanks for your
    review.

      Accuracy... regulation (certified, Grand Seiko standards)... the 8L35 seems like a "transitional" movement if they're competing with Longines, Tudor, they'd better up they're game?

    So glad you've got to own a high-end Seiko. They are fantastic and because of limited numbers, not widely appreciated.The SLA recreations (and Alpinist and King Seiko's) were absolutely fantastic quality and this looks no different. People slate Seiko for its LEs (your Blancpain analogy is good), but the fact is that they are fantastic watches, nothing like the standard production pieces. My view on the SJE093 is that it is an exceptional watch, easily superior to a Tudor/Longines level piece, but with such true heritage. If you like small skin divers! Despite being a huge Seiko fan, I can't say I'm a huge 62MAS fan, especially in its original size - for me Seiko divers begin with the '68 Hi Beat. That was where they stopped copying the Swiss and started innovating. And defined a design direction that remains today. A SJE range would be interesting - lower quality movements than the 8R55 or 8L35 in the SLAs, but more accessible in price.

    Excellent video! As it turns out, I'm like you: chasing the original design in its purest form. Recently I came across the Praesidus A-11 Type 44 which is the most faithful recreation of the original A-11's from 1942. Owning the Seiko SJE093 would be amazing too. Congrats!

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  Před 9 měsíci

      And the worst part? I bought the SJE with the intention of selling the BB54 as the replacement... but seeing them together, it's very difficult to rationalise what to do 😆 Also considering I believe the next gen BB58 will look eerily similar to our 54's (just with a few small tweaks) but this 54 design is pretty much as close as we're going to get a 1:1 original for some time... decisions, decisions 🥃

      I've done the same thing where I make an agreement with myself, but I end up keeping both watches.
      A note about my 54, though. I'm not sure if anyone has experienced this. Was on a wait list for 54 for 6 months. Got the call a few weeks ago. Long story short, I had the watch home for a day and noticed the 3 o'clock baton marker was slightly crooked.
      Brought it back to the AD, and they sent it to Tudor. They conceded to the AD that it was ever so slightly crooked but 'within tolerance.'
      Waiting to see if they will swap dial, but have the feeling they won't.

      It really means a lot to be appreciated Mike, thank you. Might not look like it, but I always spend a day road-mapping a script or talking points before any recording happens (because I can't stand meandering and repetition - especially while editing) Even during this editing phase I cut 3 minutes from this video by the end because it didn't feel "tight" enough. You've sold me on this brother , I just sold my OP 36 and will use that to purchase this extraordinary piece. I had a sla043 in the past but the muted blue dial, the thickness and the all brushed look, something was missing for me emotionally. As soon as I saw this, not only did it correct all the minor gripes of the sla043 I had but it's just speaking to me emotionally, It's a crazy hobby we're in but one thing I've learned is to always go for the watch you really want, because you'll eventually get there anyways. Cheers

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  Před 9 měsíci +1

      And must say, owning an OP myself (of some kind 😉) this SJE gives it a run for its money. Not in the movement accuracy department (at all). Of course it lacks the amazing rolex bracelet and clasp, but size, finishing, gorgeous dial, amazing lume... and all the rest. It feels like a Seiko put together by a few guys from the GS department. Your point is spot-on. Eventually through it all, we get to the watch we wanted in the first place 🥃

    I found my favourite Seiko reissue recently, the SBDX003, a limited run from back in 2000 based on the 6215 7000, subtle gold accents, muted gold text. It speaks to me because it reminds me of the first ‘analogue’ watch my mum bought for me as a child, a Lorus Sports Diver, black with gold accents and a very similar look. Wear your new watch in good health and, as always, a really great video.

    I just really love this time period in which watch cases and dials were made simple for manufacture in an attempt of minimising manufacturing defects while still preserving the design's integrity. That is why, in my opinion, the 62mas and Laurel Alpinist speak so much to us while saying so very little with their design cues.
    Gonna replace the 62 dial on my homage with an aftermarket Laurel no-date one.
    Hope it turns out well 😂

  • @ClaudeBenshaul
    @ClaudeBenshaul Před 9 měsíci +4

    You comment on the SPB was spot on. I bought an SPB myself because I wanted a modern 62MAS and it was the shortest ever honeymoon I ever had with a watch. The accumulation of small differences in the bezel, the indices, the handset, the lack of signed crown or framed date window, all these small things together with a different blank space ratio caused by larger diameter were just enough to tip the SPB straight into uncanny valley.
    It was not a 62MAS and every attempt I made to take it closer just made it worse.
    I'm glad that you found your 62MAS but at the price and production numbers it is offered, it's still not the affordable and widely available modern 62MAS that I was looking for and maybe there will never be one coming from Seiko.

    This 62MAS is one of THE classic Seiko designs of all time, one of the THE classic watch designs of all time. I didn’t grow up with the brand either. At a brand level Seiko is not special to me (I’ve tried love it, but…nope). That said the execution of the SJE093 is superb, very nearly pure (no craziness rating required 😉), which when side by side with the BB54 places the Tudor in the shade IMHO, at least in appearance. The 62MAS has a visual gravitas all its own.
    The Seiko is perhaps over-priced. But then again all luxury watches are overpriced, and that’s the orbit Seiko now wants to take.

    I have the FXD, I’ve tried on the BB54 and really like it but can’t decide between that and this Seiko, and that Omega Trilogy is just just sensational. Thanks for your great review. Don't own the SJEO93 but I don't know what it is with Seiko. Having owned many watches and re-sold many of them I tend to stick to Seiko due to their high quality level. Sometimes even above Rolex....They are in my opinion still "the underdog in the watch Industry". I know it's changing. Just purchased a SBDX017 Marinemaster and I am blowing away with the looks, lume, etc. You are so correct that the SJEO93 is on Grand Seiko level as well as the Marinemasters in my opinion. Amazing review! I think the SJE093 and the BB54, or even more broadly, high end (non-grand) Seiko and Tudor, are almost opposite in their characters. Seiko with their unique designs and beautiful finishing but shoddy QC and enigmatic regulation/accuracy really puts me off their watches (after owning many). They are like a Mercedes S class with a 4 cylinder diesel. You get everything you expect from a luxury car, but can't help but disappointed by what's beneath the bonnet/dial.

    True, a roller coaster. But I heard somewhere those things are fun. ;) I've always admired the El Primero. Both the story and especially the tricolor A386 and A3817. I wound up buying a preowned Zenith Chronometer Original last year. It's a great watch and while original in name, my heart wasn't in it so I let it go after about 6 months.
    And coincidentally, I just purchased a preowned SPB143 that arrives on Monday as I've always wanted to try the 62MAS. At just over $500, maybe the price can convince the heart.
    Great video as always. Enjoy the journey.

      @ID-Guy  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Thank you for this Ryan. It really is a journey... AND please don't take my thoughts on the SPB to heart. It is a fantastic watch... it bugs me that these SJE's aren't regular production for everyone to experience because there does feel like there's a distinction between one and another. But man, enjoy the piece! Wear the hell out of it (the diashield coating is bulletproof) 😉

    • @ryan2vs
      @ryan2vs Před 9 měsíci

      @@ID-Guy Not at all, those thoughts are of course ... yours. And for me, it think this is a different scenario. You're spot on that I do plan to wear the hell out of it. For me ... the $500 preowned price point allows me to wear it not just weekends, but on the snow, mountain hikes, and more. Something I would not likely do with the more expensive (for me) SJE093 or vintage 62MAS. Should be fun.

    agreed with everything you have said ,both pros and cons..i also didnt grow up owning them..but that design language seems imbedded in my memory..i am not in the same financial space to own this badboy..but yesterday morning i picked up a new padi samurai with the ocean blue dial...i literally just got rid of my other king samurai with the black waffle dial!...i think you have really touched on the point of,once we see a design we like ,we steer towards the perfected version of that design...so addictive and often financially unhealthy......but try telling me that this morning,with me constantly turning my wrist in the sunlight.....staring

This pickup for me was another one that happened out of the blue (definitely wasn't prepared for it) And did it with the idea that the Tudor BB54 would be sold... but now seeing them together... extremely, extremely difficult. The worst part about having these "perfect" designs... makes it so much hard if it comes time to sell. It seemed we have had a similar journey.. my first Seiko was also a SPB143 purchased 3 years ago to take over daily duties from an Omega 2254 which had just been serviced and refinished... It just wasn't the 62MAS I wanted though, so I recently picked up an SLA043 which I absolutely love... Recently picked up a grail piece Omega CK2998 pulsometer to celebrate an important milestone... similar Newman Daytonaish style like your Zenith, but something about that Seiko makes we want to reach for it all the time. Interesting journey you had there. I'm glad yours runs accurately.
    Speaking of 1 to 1 recreations i wonder why (Grand) Seiko never followed up on one of their other original designs, the Weekdater with its 6 o'clock day, i think it looks great. GS doesn't have a DayDate equivalent, in fact modern GS only has one! model with both a day and date and it's some obscure anniversary quartz with the more usual 3 o'clock placement. I always wondered why don't they bring it back.
    Could you look into it (if it interests you of course), or maybe do a video on different implementations of the day and date complication in watches in general? I'd love to hear your take on it.
    PS: A fellow Tag Heuer Carerra enjoyer noticed that the 6218 has a pretty similar case to it, and they were both made around the same time, who copied whom, if at all?
