  • This video shows instructions on how to repair a common problem of power failure for many of Yamaha RX-V series amplifiers.
We no longer carry the thermal fuse for sale, but here are the fuse ratings:
    10A
    125o Celcius
    REASON for blowing the fuse:
The specific amplifier was playing at a party at MAX volume for several hours, in a not well ventilated space.

Very cool that you could get a thermal fuse. Never seen them for sale but that doesn't mean much. I just solder the wires together but it DOES raise the risk of fire. I'd add a regular fuse to the outside in case of total failure and possible fire.

  • @samuelriesterer5427
    @samuelriesterer5427 Před 2 lety +1

My unit showed no resistance between the wires. I disassembled the transformer a little bit and retrieved the original fuse. It is labeled L7F TAM 250v 5A- 148 C for those interested. My model is the RX-V379 for reference. This fix did not work for me. I hooked the wires up directly without the fuse and it still would not power on.

This apparently does not work on an RX-V992. The transformer is set up quite a bit differently and it's hard-soldiered onto components in the machine and you can't simply just unplug plastic plugs and rip it out. Apparently their earlier models were too easy to fix and so Yamaha decided to hard-soldier everything in.

I have a rxv1200, has all the symtoms of a bad thermo protecter fuse, but it has no plugs, all solid solder conections! Also grey &blue wires are in a gang,no plug! It turns on now(moved most plugs& one seemed to reconect it) no speakers or input conected yet.let you know later. Your show was good, but, it isn't anything like my amp! Maybe the bigger ones are differant, also mine is 13-14ears old.

Oh yes appreciate that you put this up to help. but ugh.. that robo voice. My Yamaha HTR-5950 will power off seconds after powering it on, yes with a clicking sound near the power supply board. I unhooked all speakers, checked them all out. I put the receiver on the bench and took of the top, blew out the dust. The 2 8 amp 120v fuses looked good. I plugged it in w no speakers and it did the same thing. I'll try this I guess or not if it's not applicable. What else can I check? Good camera and graphics work for the most part though. 🙂

I have a RX-V373, it turns on for a second then shuts off, says PS PRT 1XX (158,159, 161, 163, 164, 167, 168, 169) All "H's". when the thing is warm, it stays on, and no issues - the HDMI 1 from my computer, and HDMI 2 to my ps3 will switch automatically, even though im using my PC. And goes to "Audio 1" other than that annoying thing, its perfect. If i leave the unit on, all the time it wont shut off, but if it goes off, i have to sit for an hour to get it on. Could this be the issue i have with the fuse? Or do i need to look at grounds, or HDMI board? I know it says a PS Error but with it working intermittently, it makes me wonder - though im no electronics expert, but build pcs. When the 169 #s do come up though, they dont always change but they do about 60-80% of the time, if that matters, its not always the same # for the error.

So the primary coil looks OK now and still no power? Things get a little tough now... Check the secondary coils, each one of them to see if they are OK, they should show a low resistance like 4-6 ohms. Then the next suspect is a small pcb for the stand by circuit. Often some parts of this standby pcb fail. Check the service manual. Otherwise the malfunction could be very difficult to find and may not worth the time...

Hi, i'm trying to fix a friend's rx-v467. It had a cap explode and wouldn't turn on. I replaced the cap and now it turns on but has no amplification. Sound can faintly be heard if the volume is maxed. I checked resistance between the two main lines of the transformer and it had resistance. Also, the main fuse isn't blown. The speaker relay turns on after the normal 2-3 seconds, but then seems to quickly turn back off. Any thoughts on what to check?

I have one general question. I live in Europe and I have Yamaha receiver model RX-V667. It is made in Malaysia. I will be moving to USA where the voltage is 110-120V, while in Europe is 220-230V. My questions is - can I replace the power supply of the receiver with one which is compatible with the US voltage? I really do not want to use external voltage converter, so I prefer to replace the power supply of the receiver or whatever else part I need to replace so I can just plug it in and play in USA.

in some cases transformers have two connections in their primal part, a 110V and 220V part. You can try to find the specs of your tranny, contact the producer. Then you only have to change connector.

I am not sure if this model has a fuse in the transformer, have not open up any of these. But you should open it up and check the primary coil for open circuit. If you find open circuit then you probably have a blown thermal fuse, like in the video, and hopefully not a burnt primary coil.

Hi, I just replaced two RX-V377 Yamaha Receiver/Amps and have tested and confirmed the problem in both cases is the HMDI cards. While using one of the bad HDMI cards neither of the four units will power up. Using a good HDMI card and all four units work perfectly. Notice, "power up" is the issue. The power supplies to both "suspect units" tested perfectly.
From Yamaha, a new HMDI card is $169 and I ONLY paid $80 for the two complete units on ebay. Here is my thinking:
    1. The "protection" circuits on the HMDI cards are not allowing the power supply to engage.
    2. The vendors who sold me the replacement (Used) units likely had the same problem (Would not power up due to "a turned off HMDI unit" by the protection circuit).
    3. Using a magnifing glass and good light, all four HDMI cards look exactly the same.
    QUESTIONS:
    a. How can I find a vendor/repair-place to repair the two inoperative HDMI cards?
    b. How can I sell the two good amps with inoperative HDMI cards for $40 each plus $12 freight?
    c. What other suggestions?
I can use the two inoperative units if the HDMI boards are repaired.
    I appreciate. Jim.clayton at Claytonbank d--com. Thanks!

Where is the HDMI card at

No the fuse was fine but I took the transformer off the board and checked it like your video. it showed 2.5 ohms. I am not sure if a channel is blow or is that normal. I made a video on CZcams. Check my name out

You mean after replacing the fuse you have 2.5ohms ? That probably means that the internal coils have suffered short circuit. The fuse could not protect them and the overheating destroyed them before the fuse blows. At least that's what I guess... Did you try to power it up? Beware that it may trigger the auto-breaker fuses of your home. Anyway, if this scenario is true, unfortunately the transformer cannot be repaired :(

My meter was reading 1.7ohms on the blue/grey wires. I only paid a buck for the receiver so I really wasn't concerned and just went ahead and plugged it in on a surge protector. To my surprise it powered on without any issue.

Your video was very helpful and useful, thanks!

People who are untrained and unskilled in electronics repair should not be attempting this sort of repair. To post this video is irresponsible.

Irresponsible is being a loser that in everything is dependent on other people.

Did you know that the energy released from a large capacitor could give you a heart attack?
      Let me guess.
      No.
The vídeo could at least show how to ground everything before start working on the receiver.
      Love.

OK, but there are no exposed capacitors here. Most audio amps they bleed off pretty quickly on their own. And if by "grounding" you mean shorting out with a screwdriver etc like some people do - then no, one needs to bleed off with a resistor, or maybe a light bulb, etc. It is NOT necessary or even desirable to ground the amp chassis to anything when working on it (except the scope ground to the chassis when observing signals, etc)

So what should I do if I'm pretty sure I have the same problem, but if I'm also afraid to cut, solder and use a powerful(?) transformer?
I have very little electronic experience.
