- In this video, I show you how to use the simple but effective technique of Cold Water Lime Pasteurization to grow mushrooms on straw. The process is pretty simple, basically just soak straw in a water bath of hydrated lime for 12-24 hours, drain, inoculate, colonize and fruit!

Put your straw in onion bags to make it easier to handle while soaking. Great video.
that's a good idea, easier to remove from the soak after!
I got a 15 pack of 5 gallon paint strainers which I have used multiple times. I fill them 3/4 full then tie off with a rubber band drop into a less than half full 20 gallon waste can with my lime mix.(I put 2 grams per litre of hard water)put a cement block on and soak for 16 to 20 hrs
Do you get much contamination?
@@chrissullivan5137 I've been using cold water lime pasteurization for 4 plus mths now and still have zero contamination!
@@metlwrker4285 thanks so much for answering. May I have your recipe?
Compared to all the other grower channels, you make it look so easy! I love it!
Awesome! I guess it can be as easy or as hard as you want it to be :)
I agree with this and its more cheaper than the usual making process :)
@@FreshCapMushrooms question man, you took the logs to a bright place in the end, is it? I thought it has to be always in a dark room..
@@semi5alpha some mushrooms, especially oysters, need a bit of sunlight to trigger fruiting. This is due to their position on the forest floor and using leaf drop (and therefore more sunlight) as an indicator of ideal fruiting time.
@@semi5alpha mushrooms don't go through photosynthesis like plants, but they ARE photoreactive! Although you CAN fruit any type of mushroom COMPLETELY in the dark, you will have odd shaped and colored fruiting bodies, as light helps them form in the familiar ways we know and love!
Man, I can't tell how helpful your videos are, thanks a lot, God bless you, you're my hero Haha
Greetings from Brazil!
Tony, you're an excellent communicator. Gratitude for your helpful videos!
Thats it, I bingewatched most of your videos, but this one knocked it out of the ballpark. I'm growing Oysters now.
Interesting method đ€âșïž definitely gonna have to try this at some point! Keep up the great videos!
Video suggestion; how to make a spore print/spore seringe and how to properly store them.
For draining our limed straw we took a plastic garbage can and drilled holes in the bottom. We then forked it in there when done to drain and placed a heavy weight on it overnight. it was fine the next morning to load into the growing containers. You can use the garbage can for regular use by just using a bag in it.
Amazing information! Love how you show your process and not just the tek involved. Clear and to the point. Great work!!!
Awesome! Glad you like it! Thanks for watching-
Isn't process and technique the same thing?
I like the fact that the methods your suggesting are in this case very simple and possible for some one even with out lots of equipment to set up or at least possible on a budget
I like how you set them up outside but that would be destroyed in a day in Saskatchewan. We rarely get a day without wind, and usually it's more than enough to blow that plastic away or shred it. Our tarp shed is done after just 2 winters.
The hunting tip arrow is a nice touch. Really effective too, id think
He is a really cool dude and keep everything simple. Thank you!
Great instruction and easy method , i am definitely going to do this as i was discouraged by the boiling method before
Does it works for you?Give me update please enlighten me
Tony is the man!
The man, the legend, tony..
I love your hole poker, I bet does wonders on deersđ
Thank you. Awesome video and well explained Tony :)
Awesome video!
Iâm new so silly question, but did you add extra or larger holes for the fruiting to happen through? Or did those clusters grow through the small holes that were punched through before colonization?
In the bucket videos Iâve seen, massive clusters will grow out of holes that are only a quarter inch big
So presumably itâs the same puncture size with the bag
Using a broadhead is genius đ đ đ
Hey Tony, have you ever tried wood ash pasteurization for straw? Please make a video on that too
You should do a test with crude oil. Supposedly Crude Oil is a super food for Oyster Mushrooms as Oyster Mushrooms can break down petroleum products such as plastic and convert it into usable waste / compost.
wouldnt eat
Sumptuously!!! You are a magician !!!
Fantastic ideas ! That will be much easier than steam ! Thank You
Great. I was looking out for videos with Lime pasteurisation and I got this. Now I am clear to use dehydrated lime.
is this really healthy to eat?
If it's just a matter of driving the pH up then ashes should work just as well. If you have access to free fresh wood chips or shavings from a mill you can burn a batch for the ash needed to sterilize the rest. Magnesium shouldn't be an issue there since it would otherwise be present in the wood as well, though I guess it could concentrate it some. Seems like it's worth an experiment. I was considering burning shavings to heat water to sterilize the batch, but if I can skip heating the water then that's all the better.
You put a lot of production value into your videos and it shows man. I watched about 4 of these before I figured I should subscribe. Very cool! :)
This is the only channel where the guy still has a good head on his shoulders
Anybody know whether it would make any difference if the grow/fruiting bag were black in color? Apart from not being able to see contamination/progress that is.
Hey Tony, thanks for making this video. & sharing the technique for cold pasteurization. Canât wait to try it on a small scale. I have a couple quarts of pink oyster grain spawn to fruit using this method.
Awesome to hear! Happy growing (pinks are great!)
Great job. Gearing up for another grow season here in Sydney and your videos are really helpful!
Awesome video Tony. Am going to use this method. This simple procedure is very much what I want to stick with for cultivating mushrooms!
Thanks, Tony! Your videos are fantastic. I've watched how you grow mushrooms on mushroom beds outside without pasteurising the straws. Do you recommend pasteurising the straws before inoculating them to grow mushrooms outside? Would that make it less hard for other things outside to grow in the mushroom bed or will pasteurising makes no difference when growing outside?
Very useful video,,, â€
Tony, could hydrated lime be added to fuel pellets & bran to skip using the pc?
4:07 soooo satisfying
Great video as usual, BUT please tell us more about your mini makeshift greenhouse you had them in !!!!! What RH% you aiming for ? Are the sides open for more airflow.
Awesome!
So with the measurements it's metric and imperial but would equate to 300g lime to 208 litres? (15g to 10.4 L) assuming US gallon not UK
If you catch the water draining from the straw you can re-use it. This will reduce how much lime you need to add to the next batch. (Or you can just submerge the straw for a month and let the anaerobic bacteria do the job - though that requires 31 barrels and lots of water to start with, you can recycle most of it.)
I was wondering about this. Is there a recommended amount of time you can reuse the same water before it requires refreshing?
Could you use this method with smaller bags for an indoor grow to make a sort of DIY grow your own box? Really trying to avoid buying a pressure cooker to sterilize fruiting blocks.
By the way you can pick up Calcium Hydroxide at any market that has a Mexican Foods section.
Tony, thanks for the clear video and instructions. One question: how do you recommend disposing of the lime bath? Is it high enough pH that it needs to be neutralized or disposed of carefully?
Vinegar, lemon juice, or other acids will neutralize the base for disposal. Although, you can probably reuse it if you strain the solution out.
you all prolly dont care but does any of you know of a way to get back into an instagram account??
I stupidly lost my account password. I would love any help you can give me.
@Dakari Easton Instablaster =)
@Roman Alejandro Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and Im trying it out atm.
Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Roman Alejandro It worked and I finally got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D
Thank you so much you saved my ass !
Thank you brother

Great video..the start to finish videos are always the best...this seems way easier than boiling.....I'm going to buy a new barrel today. I have had success will small scale hydrogen peroxide pasteurization before but I think I'm really going to like the lime method.
Awesome! Thanks so much for the comment. Yes, this method really is fantastic. You can re-use the lime water as well (add more straw for another soak), or even measure it out so you have just enough water to pasteurize the lime, with almost none left over. I can't believe how good it works!
How much hydrogen peroxide is to be used per kg of dry straw?
Could you do a video on on that outdoor fruiting chamber? I've been toying around with a similar design, and I like what you came up with. Can you enclose that wooden frame in plastic sheeting?
did you check the PH level of the substrate after draining it? if yes, what was the PH? Thanks
Very nice sir ,very helpful video for new mushroom growers . Thanks
How do you dispose of your water after this process?
nice video man, hey what are the parameters of magnesium content being low or high? As in what number would be considered high please?
So good! Cant wait to try. Thx is đ
Wow! I'm blown away by the cost savings, labor savings, etc.
Now I'm confused about which way to go. Is this the only way your growing now? No more sterilization method? I'm all for this.
William Adams
So far its been only used successfully with certain strains...other methods still need to be used for other strains.
@@john-smith. Thank you for your reply. It is important to me that I plan my operation properly. I'm about to hit ss age, this will be my retirement! I'm thankful for every morsel of information I can glean!
I freaking love watching your videos
perfect
What do you do with all the hydrated lime water after? Idk if some of it can be used for gardens? If so, probably only so much. Then what with the rest?
Doing this in barrels each week⊠need info on what to do with this high ph water
question: how many harvest before you change the straws
What do you do with the lime water when done?
Wait, so you don't have to have a special greenhouse with high humidity for them to fruit?
it's wrapped in plastic bro. humidity is at 100% in there.
Great videos, I agree 100%. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! From South Africa :o)
Do you have to rinse the straw after? The high ph doesn't affect the mycelium?
Hey so when you go to fruit and you put the bags in that trellis you built did you enclose it on all sides or just the back side? And what temp was it when you did this please. Thank you
I enjoy watching your videos . Keep up the good work .
Could we use the same lime method for casing soil sterilization ?
I canât help wondering why people wouldnât just always do this instead of trying to pasteurize in hot water? Why go through the extra steps if theyâre not necessary? Thanks Tony.
I actually add magnesium into my spawn. Just following some of the research from university.
how high/low can the magnesium contents of the lime be ?
is 2% ok or is that too high ?
Thank you Tony.
Hi Tony, big fan of your show. I bought everything I need to grow mushrooms at home but I cant find the grow bag. Do you have any recommendation as to where to get the bags? and what is the size of the bag you are using? thank you so much for the inspiration to grow mushrooms at home.
Hi Tony
Nice watching your channelđ God blessâ„ïž
Does the same process work for wood chips or other pasteurized substrates?
thanks for such as nice video all the best
Tony your the man! âđŒ Love your vids
very informative and helpful. thanks for the video.
I love you videosâ€
Can u use this on wild bird seed
Great video! Quick question: How do you dispose of the lime water after its used?
Read in the net: "a way you dispose of it is to add kitty liter to the buket of lime water until it is all absorbed. Then throw the soaked kitty liter in a tight heavy duty trash bag and throw it in the trash".
@@kevinhoulin9855 that would be a heck of a lot of kitty litter for a 55 gallon drum
@@hashkat I assume...thought the same
A better question would be- can we reuse the same water since it's already high in ph
That way we can save on hydrated lime powder and have no disposal issues
Just an idea
Not sure if it will work
Neutralize with baking soda. Once neutral it's safe to pour on a lawn.
Is this a cost thing or are there types of shrooms you NEED to grow on straw?
So is hydrated lime safe to use with mushrooms that you will eat?
Love your videos and your positivity! I did this method and have oysters that have been in a dark cool room for about 3 weeks but have not started pinning yet. Should I bring them outside or just wait to see what happens?
S Campos they need light to pin
Waw. Just hydrated lime. No cooking and anything. So easy to look at
You are awesome dude!
What percentage magnesium would you consider "low"? The hydra-lime I have indicates a dry weight analysis of 20.4% magnesium.
Some says it has to be less than 5%
Interesting! Does it work for sawdust too? other substrates in general?
Yes, It does :)
Yes
Did you go to Ojota to look for lime?đ
I'm so happy to learn this method! Off to ojota I go...
Glad I saw this.
Hi Tony first of all thank you so much for all the information shared. You are helping us a lot here in south Brazil.
Just one question... Is it possible to reuse that water after adding the hidratated lime? We d love to save water as much as possivel. What do you think? Hugs!
Andrea
I know I'm a year late but, if the ph of the water stays relatively high then it will continue to kill bacteria and that's the whole point of the alkaline water.
crazy mix of units of different systems but I calculated that would be 0.7g/l . Just have to look which mushrooms grow on straw.
Nice,thanks for make this video.
Great video Tony! Where do you get the poly tubes to make the logs?
What do you do with the rest of the water in the barrels? Does it hurt the grass? Why don't mushrooms come out all the holes you make for ventilation? Nice video.
Just want to say "Your videos are great". I really want to try this cold water pasteurization method and am having trouble finding the proper lime. I seen the image of the analysis just can't find a retailer in my area that carries a similar product. Would you mind telling me the brand you use?
www.amazon.com/ask/questions/Tx1SVJYE1F3P64T/ref=ask_dp_dpmw_al_hza Not identical to what is shown here, but might serve.
@@miamimosaics I actually found food grade hydrated lime, also know as Mississippi Lime or Vitacal
Hey Tony. What was the dry straw quantity you pasteurised. Greetings from India. God bless you.
Can this hydrated lime pasteurization technique be used with Aspen chips and Coir pith?
I've been using aspen chips and hardwood pellets I'm sure coir will also work. the key is to remember to grow Oyster Mushrooms I'm not sure about other varieties such as Shiitake, Lion's Mane or Maitake. Just remember coir holds lots of water and you want to drain that off.
Great instruction, thank you! I'm gearing up to try this method. I wonder what mil thickness of poly tubing you use?
Thanks
Hi Tony. Is it also possible to use cold water lime pasteurization on sawdust substrate or it's best to placed them in pp bags & sterilized them using a steamer? Many thanks from a newbie mushroom grower here in the Philippines.
Sure, this could definitely work, just don't add any extra nutrition (like bran ect)
Can you do a video on how to make bucket spawn yourself
how many times it can be harvested?
And how long can the straw last before being replaced with new straw if we growing oyster mushroom??
Dose this just work for straw and hay
Tony, another great video. I'm in the process of trying this pasteurization process out but with 3.5 gallon buckets...will let you know how it goes. One question: is the water and lime mixture a one use thing or could you pasteurize multiple batches of straw by possibly adding a bit more water and lime...basically trying to see if there is a way to save water. Thx
What happens to all the plastic (poly-tubing) bags you use during growing?
How do you go about deposing of the water after? Does the ph drop after having the straw in the solution for time period?
I canât imagine draining high alkaline liquid is good? Is there a way to bring the ph back towards neutral?
