Great video. I am a novice but have a Sony A7S iii. I totally underestimated how complex exposure would be for video, when I am quite a decent photographer, and what I mean by that is that I have no issues with exposure issues and take a decent photo. But moving across to Video, oh my goodness, trying to get SLOG3 nailed especially during a bright day, has been driving me insane. I have watched so many CZcams videos, and honestly I am getting headaches from all the different opinions. The one consistent thing is advice to use the MM on the Camera. I have been told when filming S-Cinetone you keep it to 0, but with SLOG3 you over expose to +1.7 to 2.0 stops. I honestly have gone out and tried so many different situations, and to say my results are sporadic is an understatement. I am getting to the point where I almost wanted to give up, and just go for S-Cinetone which I get much more consistent results. SLOG3 I keep being told isn't THAT hard to use and is over egged on how complex it is, well I disagree. I follow all the rules and the results are frustrating. I even purchased a Ninja V thinking that would help me, and I am still learning about False Colour and things like that .. anyway I am waffling .. my point is .. people like me just need someone out in the field with a Sony A7S iii, with a standard lens perhaps a 24mm, a Ninja would be great, and then just show different situations and show the end to end process. There are videos will the Camera setup, there are lots of videos like this which are very informative and helpful, but I still have yet to find someone outside with a Camera, a Lens, ND Filters and they just show you how to film in different situations showing LIVE how they adjust things to get the best results. Ok, apologies, I am just getting frustrated !! thanks again for a great video ..

I had pretty good experience with the exposure mode. Even with a Sony a7siii and a7iv. Problems may occur when your metering mode is on multi or average screen. With multi the camera measures the overall exposure and calculates an average number that doesn’t show your the real exposure. Switch the metering mode to center or even spot and you’ll be fine with your object you want to expose. ✌️ btw great video Harv!

Great content, as always. Thank you !
My advice : by all means, use the exposure meter when you begin at filming. This way you'll know, right from the very first screening, why you must NOT use it anymore. Simple as that...
This probably is my best piece of advice when it comes to exposing, photo or video alike. Because it's kind of the same for photography : the exposure meter is barely able to distinguish day from night, you proved it. With RAW files and their wide range of adjustments, photography is better done by eyeballing from the screen. Not super accurate, but time-saving, and you'll have plenty of it in post-production for real fine setting and correcting.

  • @simonjacobsphotography

Excellent as ever. A lot of your explanation and understanding of metering is much the same coming from stills shooting- and implementation of what the meter sees, and what you are trying to achieve. A stills shooter no more trusts the in-camera meter than a video one. As you say, it’s about interpreting the scene and the info the meter, or other tool is giving to achieve your desired look and feel.
Oh, and a Zebras vid? Yes please!

Interesting, I actually had good experiences with "screen averag" and directly looking at the monitor in Slog3. SHooting at 1.5 stops over yielded great results in almost all situations. O focurse you need to interpret the screen to check if its right.

Coming from the Panasonic Gh4/5 where I found the exposure meter to be fairy good, I am now finding on the A7s iii that I am generally underexposing by quite a bit. Its good that the Sony has more dynamic range than the Panasonic so I can pull up the highlights in s- cinetone.. but still mastering the best settings for different filming... Your vids are really helpful ...thanks

Great video! I’ve been leaning towards exposing with gamma display assist and exposing to preserve highlights with slog3. Also goes in hand with Joel stating you can expose normally on the newer Sony’s when using Phantom LUTs.
I do feel overexposing a bit in low light is still necessary though.

Back on the a7iii I always exposed between .07 - 1.7 over. I’ve found with the A7SIII & FX3 that this isn’t the same - images look fine (no PP) when shooting but are clearly far brighter when I get to the edit. Almost like HLG. There’s plenty of range to get it right in post, but I’ve started being much closer to zero now.

Please note, after your suggestions, I now use Cine2 with manual knee point 95% and slope +5. I’d like to understand how not to fails those settings with more complicated picture profiles! Thanks! Funny Harv!, to be honest I didn’t even know what you were on about! Frankly I never understood that indicator and always just ignored it!
The first time I attempted to shoot in Slog was a disaster. I quickly realized I didn’t know how to expose for,Slog Which was proven when I looked at the footage and found it was unusable.
The game changer was when I bought a few Ninja V’s!! I did it to escape 8 bit 4.2.0. Which was kicking my butt when it came time to color match my cameras. The surprise realization was the ability to load LUT’s into the ninja’s. WOW, NOW I can see what the Slog will basically look like? . For exposures, I find I have to rely on the Zebras in the Ninja’s… but I still don’t really know what I’m doing 😂. [exposure wise?]. Clearly I’m not as fussy as you are. My customers seem happy and I feel OK with what I’m doing?
Histograms and waveforms don’t make much sense to me [I understand the theory] but not their use in practical terms and certainly NOT when in a “under the gun”! Shoot [which is always?]

I personally have looked everywhere on youtube as a newbie videoographer for this and no one has done this. New videoographers don't have all the fancy gear and external monitors they just have their new camera and some nd/ vnd filters. And they just want to get some good footage, and expose properly.

I filmed a memorial service yesterday with my Sony set in "M" Manual, ISO and W/B also set manual BUT still my exposure was fluctuation majorly up and down. Even when the speaker person was at a podium and just moving his head a little. There was a window 6 feet behind him. I think I can answer this, I suspect this is related to the knee & slope settings in your PP. If it’s set to auto knee then you may notice some fluctuation in the highlight roll off, I suspect this is what you’re seeing. I’ve had content for a potential video rolling around in my head for a while after I filmed a vid about knee and slope czcams.com/video/NsToAL1mLLI/video.html I hope this helps 👍🏻

I don't trust the camera screen at all, it looks good but in reality (my a6300) makes unusable posterisation hue twists above 78 IRE with the majority of gammas, s-log gammas are the only ones that seem to be reliable in full auto with random light conditions.

    • @Studio51media
      @Studio51media Před 2 lety

Yes I concur [right word? Lol]
I have 3 a6300’s… love them but yeah the screen is deadly! LOL
like I posted here the Ninja’s saved my butt… of course they aren’t cheap… but still they have made the product coming off the 6300’s WAY more usable [as opposed to internal recording] and like I said, give you a screen that is way easier to see, the ability to load and view your LUT’s and decode in real time while still saving in Slog . I can make exposure decisions by “feel” and instead of 8 bit 4.2.0, it records in 10 bit 4.2.2 apple ProRes. Which helps with camera matching in post.
I don’t know if I’m just unlucky? Or it just a thing you have to deal with when sub $10k cameras? But each sensor on my 6300’s seems to interpret the same colors slightly differently and at 8bit, 4.2.0 the lack of color range means that colors get “pulled” from what they actually where… and with each camera pulling off in different directions… I found myself “chasing my tail” [trying to color match in post] but with 10 bit 4.2.2. I seem to have less pulling / shifting on the record side and more latitude on the post side… still never perfect, but finally I feel I can get “close enough” LOL
PS the Ninjas also solved all my thermal issues and it goes without saying limitless recording [up to the limit of your storage] we have all already loaded the hack around the time limit, but the heat often gets you anyway, haha

True that!… but I also think it’s WAY harder to “do” than we realize… look at canon? The 5Dmrk II set the world on fire… then, nothing! For years until recently with [the R5?] they couldn’t really touch Sony.
I agree [in a way] about the GoPro’s I use 4 of them… but let’s get real, that image really can’t compare except under VERY specific conditions.. [like outdoors with tons of light] but shoot in the dark and create a super shallow DOF, and forget the GoPro LOL
My point is our little 6300’s are very old right now… but they still pack a punch!! And [I don’t know if you remember this] but when the 6300’s first came out… internal 4k recording was cutting edge!! And with that came a LOT of”trade off’s [HORRIBLE “shutter roll”] just to name one… also internal 1080 had is WORTHLESS… and that also makes no sense to me.
Yeah the GoPro scam… I’m feeling you, I have a bunch of issue over here as well… when they work, they are really convenient but I had to send one back to be replaced too.
