Both of em shed tears despite knowing it was coming. I did too. That was phenomenal acting right there. That actress didn't get to play that role for long but god she did awesome.

What actually got me was when Joel cried for Tommy's help. I didn't see that coming, since it wasn't in the actual game. But it was such a neat addition.
The " we are not sick " part was anticlimactic.
In the game it was much more REAL .... also i cant feel sad if i see how they race swap for the sake of WOKENESS.
And it's always replacing a white character with a non white one. How about we start replacing non white characters with white characters`?

@@mystery_mike23 Well Arcane isn't an adaptation thats why. Its an original story on its own but also retcons and enhances the game' lore. If it was adapting then it would just be a bunch of different characters fighting.
That girl that got euthanized, I thought at first sight that she was a younger Ellie, and they were showing how Ellie got to the school or something.

I am a newbie to this story - never played the video game and knew next to nothing about it until I saw the trailer a couple months ago. My interest in the TLOU was much more due to learning that the show was from the same person who did Chernobyl, which was one of my favorite shows the year that came out.
All that being said, it thrills me to see how much the fans who are responsible for the videogame being such a huge hit being quite happy with this adaptation. As much as I loved this pilot, I can only imagine how much more fans seem to be getting out of this. Adaptations are usually rough, so appreciation this “win” for fans of this story.

Some people already compared this to the start of GoT for the readers of the books.
I think the contrast in how Ellie reacts to Joel killing the guard Vs how Sarah reacts to him killing the old lady is very deliberate. Ellie reacts positively because of the world she's grown up in and that she hasn't had anyone stand up for her like that. That's for the good and ill of the relationship and how it develops. They depend on each other and care for each other
but that doesn't mean all the horrible and negative things that happen, that bring them closer together, arent toxic. It's heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.
The actress playing Sarah totally crushed that scene and so did Pascal. The whole story is dependent on the audience feeling Joel's pain in that moment, and nothing works moving forward without it. I was a little hesitant at first when I saw they aged Sarah up a bit, but they clearly chose someone who could carry that moment and she did it wonderfully!
The entire cast nailed the characters perfectly, to the dismay of a certain group of people. Can't wait for the second Part 2 meltdown when they introduce Abby.
The first 25 or so minutes of this... My God. The build up. You could feel it. I don't think I've ever seen such an intro... Ever. It's absolutely amazing
i love how its just like the game but we get more smaller details in the show. like instead of just seeing joels daughter give hime the watch you get to see how she got the watch. same with why joel wasnt there when his daughter woke up to an empty house. its perfect. inmstead of taking stuff away they give us more to add to the story.
The cordyceps tentacles in the mouth are actually their replacement explanation of the spores, which do not exist in the show, as they would basically mean that humanity wouldn't have had any sort of chance of survival if that was the way of transmission. The initial infected is likely happening through the flour. They hint strongly at that with all the missed chances of eating pancakes (breakfast), biscuits (early morning offer from the neighbors), cookies (baking with Sarah at the neighbors), cakes (evening & next day promise), etc. So it is likely that it started similarly to an ergot infection of the grain, which they refer to at the beginning intro, that made its way into the global food production and from there into the human hosts.

I know it's only been 1 episode but Pedro is fucking amazing as Joel thus far. This show is shaping up to be brilliant.
It's been almost 10 years, but it was beyond hard to watch Sarah die in Joel's arms again 😭😭

I feel like Gabriel Luna as Tommy was the best casting for it since I loved his Robbie Reyes/Ghost Rider and how he handled being an older brother on AoS. So I am excited to see more of him and how he handles the Tommy character moving forward.
These mad men on HBO timed it very very good, pandemic not even over yet. It's like saying if influenza put the world on its knees, then fungus will be the RKO. That opening sequence gave me chills bro.
And they shot this probably when covid was still on its major swing down.

I guess I'm lucky I don't have issues with readily accepting the cast even though I love the VAs and their performances. I look at it as a multiverse type of thing. I love seeing different interpretations.

@•Hypnos • I'm stating the exact opposite. Joel is a loving father living through a traumatic experience of losing his beloved daughter while the world erupts into insanity. The emotional beat would not change regardless of the character's ethnicity. Unfortunately, for some, that's all that matters.
I instantly recognised Anna Torv from ‘Fringe’, but it wasn’t until I heard Achara say “I love Anna Torv” that it hit me: Achara herself was in ‘Fringe’, and may have actually worked with Anna! 😮

idk personally, as someone who has played both games multiple times over the years, I had no trouble seeing Nico, Gabriel, and Pedro as the Sarah, Tommy, and Joel I know from the games. I really thought Nico and Bella especially captured the presence and voice of both Sarah and Ellie so damn well.
I truly don't think i've ever seen a video game adaptation done so well on film... if this is a sign of things to come then i am more than pleasantly surprised.
God this episode was absolutely amazing I had very low exceptions for this series cuz I was afraid they would've bombed it but I'm so happy being proven wrong😁😁😁

Me wondering if I'm heartless for not tearing up during Sarah's death. I was so caught up in how perfectly every scene was playing out, how accurately they were capturing the game. Truly in awe.

The boy who would be infected brought me a double flashback to The Walking Dead. Firstly, he looked like Lizzie and secondly, he reminded me of Sophia when she stepped out of the barn. I think the similar clothing and camera work caused that in me. I think that was intentional and a subliminal reference to the walking dead.
I played part 1 and 2 4 times each and I had no problems to get along with all the cast characters immediately. And I was really skeptical. This series is going to be great.
For a second I thought it was the "look at the flowers" girl.

Jaby I truly felt your pain watching this, I had the same feelin having the knowledge to know what's coming but it still hits us twice as more in live action. And BTW this kid they throw in the fire was the same kid who arrived to Boston who was talking to the officer silence.
I'm actually having no problem with the casting (I was hesitant about the casting originally, but all of that is gone). In fact, at times I'm having the opposite problem. Bella Ramsey is nailing the depiction of Ellie so well there are moments where I see and hear Ellie from the game. And every time I hear Gabriel Luna speak I swear I'm listening to Jeffrey Pierce's portrayal of Tommy from the game-their voices are so alike. It's not really a bad thing, but it does make me start thinking of the game rather than focusing on THIS-the HBO version of the show. Those issues will probably fade as the show goes on and I get used to these actors (who are all doing a fantastic job).
There is so many instances where they sound exactly like the characters in game and in loving it so much. When Ellie says (I believe, my memory sucks) "What the fuck" just before Tess closes the door on her it sound just like Ashley
I think the interesting thing about this is there are so many people coming into this knowing what the story is, and their perspective is going to be so vastly different and interesting compared to those who haven't. I've mentioned in other comments that this is the first show where I'm more interested in seeing reactions of people who know the story completely. While I'm sorry if the accuracy of the performances are throwing off your experiences, I'd be curious to see how that pans out over the course of the rest of the series. You should do reactions, lol
This episode hit HARD. Absolutely outstanding.
It was hard for me to separate playing the game so many times from what I was watching. Thankfully it was very well done and I am so excited for the rest of the series.
That was a fantastic first episode, the character soo far are great! Everyything feels familiar, yet new and standalone enough to require attention. You're not looking for easter eggs in the backround and miss what's actually happening.
I also really love how the main characters are the same, but different, I think that's what jaby meant by getting use to them. We known them so well and we see them here, but they're just a little different. For me that culminates in moments, when I see the Ellie from the game bursting out through Bella Ramsey, especially the moment when they got out of the QZ and she's like "wow, we're really out!". That was just perfect Ellie.
I really like how they deepen what we saw in the games. It's just the first episode, but it really seems like they understood the difference between game and adaptation, that's so important to give us similar feelings in a different way.
i loved how the show goes deeper, hours before the infection and flesh out character connections and relationships, makes Sara's death hit harder and cried for a good bit.
Amazing Episode, Amazing Reaction - Joel & Sarah's scene is so heartbreaking - both in-game and now in live action - overall, a phenomenal episode!

As a extremely huge Last of Us fan who absolutely loves both games Part 1 and 2 loved every moment of the pilot there is some changes made but at least they stick as most to the game material as possible which is great.
Loved the premiere. Looking forward to exploring the rest of the season in the future.
I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who cried before the ellipse, knowing what was about to happen.
One small thing I would've preferred is if they had moved the opening credits like they did in the game. I liked the addition of the scientists predicting things (doubly so once I recognized doomsayer as Jonathan from the Mummy), but if they had done the 2000's part as a cold open and then put the opening credits and cgi spreading of the spore in the same place the game did, it would've been much more impactful, especially for new fans who haven't played the game. Doing it this way, the viewer doesn't have as much time to soak in what just happeend, which is even more disappointing after giving us more time to see Joel and Sarah before the event.
Watching the opening with Sarah’s death hits so extra hard for me having a 5 year old daughter. As a parent one of the biggest fears is having one of your children die.
The best thing is, Marlene’s casting is the same actor from the video game!
As a person who played the game on the Ps3 the day it was released here in South Africa I love the show it honor and respect it have for the source material is a lesson on perfection hopefully it has a impact on how video game to movie is handled in the future.

The intro Talkshow reminded me so much about the I Am Legend opening scene and it gave me the creeps

The only two changes I wish they hadn’t made:
Eliminating “But sir, there’s a little girl.” from the soldier’s lines.
Not having Joel and Tess wear masks when they see the dead infected. I get that they want you to see their faces, but the gas masks would add so much tension, and make the cordyceps infection scarier by making it airborne.

Yeah I am saddened that they decided to remove the concept of spores from the show, but I look forward to seeing what they do in place of that to build tension.

Holy Hell, this pilot episode of The Last of Us was picture-perfect.
I was hooked from scene one where they basically explained the fungus infection/pandemic (also, how crazy is it that it's basically a parallel to what we've slightly been living in the last 3 years?).
Also, as someone who finally played the original game during lockdown, I LOVED how damn near accurate everything was.
The death of Sarah (f#ck off to the racist trolls who had a problem with Sarah being race-swapped in this episode), albeit familiar, was still just as painful as the game version. Props to Nico Parker and Pedro Pascal for their chemistry and the acting between them.
What made the experience even more fulfilling was that my dad, who is a MASSIVE fan of Last of Us 1, loved the episode as well. Fun fact: Last of Us 1 is my dad's all-time favorite video game. He noticed every little detail watching the episode, which made me smile.
I'm hooked, and I cannot wait for more.

The choices people have to make, during something like this... Every man for himself, as sad as it sounds. When you have your own to care for, you ignore the rest. Gabriel Luna is awesome. Finally he gets some more mainstream show to shine. He was great as Ghost Rider on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. I'm still mad at Fiege for killing his standalone show on Hulu.

Sarah was such an angel. The girl they chose to play her was so sweet. It was heartbreaking to see her die. What I didn't get was why were the infected having straws in their mouths?

The straws I think is the fungus coming out through the mouth, much like how the real Cordyceps fungus sprouts out through an ant's head.

28 Days Later takes a lot from the novel, (a short read, I highly recommend checking it out,) John Wyndham’s The Day If the Triffids (1951.) So yes, those theme’s definitely appear even earlier than that, including in Richard Matheson’s novel I Am Legend (1954,) (best adaptation of the book would be The Last Man On Earth (1964) starring Vincent Price.) Humans being a primary threat in the, “post-apocalypse,” is a major theme in both books.
*George A. Romero & Jack Russo pulled heavily from I Am Legend & the Vincent Price adaptation, The Last Man On Earth, for Night Of The Living Dead (1968,) and really inserting that theme into the bourgeoning genre centered around a new style of zombie.
The was a really good starting episode. I didn't even realize that Tess was played by Anna Torv, but I knew she looked familiar to me. I haven't seen her in anything I normally watch since I first saw her in the show called "Fringe" with co-stars Joshua Jackson, Jasika Nicole, Lance Riddick, Blair Brown and John Noble. Jaby's right about game adaptions should be done as TV series, but I think that the series should be a setup for a movie after the first season. Movies should use the same cast from the TV show to tell and expand on certain big story events within the games and then as a tie in to the next season of the TV series. I'm surprised that The Walking Dead TV series didn't take advantage of this idea. There were a lot of stories in that comic adaptation that could've been connected through TV and movies. This show could even use the series to tie into The Last of Us 3 if they plan on making it once the series covers The Last of Us 2 game. Anyway, enjoyed the reaction and can't for the next one. 👍👍✌out.
WHY bother listing the Fringe cast?
You DO know one of the reactors in this had a bit part in Fringe (TWICE) and would not need that info.
Because I wanted to mention it. Not everyone noticed it or has watched the show "Fringe". Also I don't know what reactors are in which shows especially if it was a small roll.
There are actors that I'm a fan of now that I might've seen in something earlier and didn't even fully remember them at the time. Elizabeth Olsen was in the "Old Boy" remake, but I didn't really know her until she played Scarlett Witch in the MCU. I thought she was cute, but just didn't feel a need to commit her to memory.
I comment not just for the reactors, but for anyone else that might read it. I don't really expect the reactors on a channel to even notice my comments let alone respond to them anyway.@@ChibiHoshiDragon

I just sometimes drop information about stuff and sometimes I don't. No ones has ever had a problem with it until now. You might be reading more into my comment than necessary.
This isn’t just the best video game adaptation ever made but it’s one of the best pilots to a tv show ever made!!! The very opening for this series was completely different from the original game yet it was so freaking perfect! It described how dangerous Cordyceps was EVEN BETTER than the game! And even the entire Outbreak Day flashback was somehow done better. I have played the game 7 times already and thought I could prepare myself for Sarah’s death, but nope, I was almost as broken as Joel.
I’ve been waiting for The Last Of Us to be adapted for 10 years and it was worth the wait.
My number one tv show opening pilot episode is Lost, that one is the best.

And yes, the characters in TV vs the game's, are different. In part for the actors, but in part I think because Craig Mazin that with Neil Druckman's blessings and inputs, changed the dialogues a little bit too.
