  • How much did our abandoned boat cost? Well, that is the most asked question everyone have been asking since we posted a tour video of our "new" sailboat. So, we decided to answer that on this week's episode. But we won't talk only about that. We also answer question like: how much we believe the refit will cost? How did we pay for the boat and how will we afford to pay for the refit? Why did we name the channel "Odd Life Crafting"? Well, all this answers are connected, so if you are curious you can watch this episode and hopefully it will all make sense.

      Clarke that's ignorant. What if someone wanted to understand the cost of doing this in case they were considering doing it. Also 50k for a boat that can't sail is a bad investment. You can actually get a functioning boat for that cost. If you publicize your action on a platform such as CZcams you accept the fact that you will be criticized. Lol seriously go to yacht world you can buy a functioning 45 ft yacht for 60k with much less repair cost.

    • @lionreb
      @lionreb Před 5 lety +7

      @@abshir9677 It might not be a steel boat that could have gone to Antarctica. Plus, that interior is amazing and beautiful! You need a lot of information in order to make that judgement. The people that are buying the boat and fixing that boat need to find the deal acceptable. Just tackling the repairs that you see in their videos takes fortitude and willingness that is more than money. I hope you enjoy as this wonderful couple do as well, I am sure!

      Yes, they can sit without knowledge or experience criticising this whole idea. But it is clear from the comments of the people that have owned a few boats that this is a good idea. This is a world cruiser, that can take ice and coral in its stride and will in all likelihood keep the water on the correct side of the hull.

      I'm an old hombre, now 67, but 30 at hearth. You guys are fulfilling a dream I had all my life... sailing !
      I'm a retire from a carreer in advertising design and project coordinator. I loved my job until it destroyed me from overwork. Deep burn-out, actually a depression for 4 years. My friend doctor told me find myself a new passion. Bingo ! I'll find myself a decent boat to refit andfinally go sailing !! Problem is, I did'nt have the money to start... Bummer.
      Ok, I'll wait till I may get my retirement benefits. Like 2 years ago at 65.
      Now I have back problems, sore anckles and a huge loss of energy. So, no more plans of refit and sailing MY boat.
      That's why I follow you young turks, full of dreams and ready for hard work to make those dreams alive and kicking !
      I salute you both and will be waiting for a new episode of your life.

      Imagine how much time effort and expense went into that boat and then you can begin to understand. For the owner it is not just getting a certain amount of money. it is also about releasing a portion of their own dream into the hands and imaginations of others who can shepherd the boat and a new dream. sometimes it works out well. I think that this time it will!

    I think you are right on the money with this. Even an interior like that would cost $50,000 if you were staring with a hull. Then $30,000 for spars and rigging. Also this is going to look amazing inside when you polish that interior timber. What a lovely story about Mr Odd. I have a similar memory of a big hearted guy who helped me get a job.

    I think you guys did well to buy this boat for the price. A steel boat (especially HGS) will serve you well and is sturdy as hell. When you add in your time and the additional cost you have a good boat, the way you like it, for a good cost.

    I don't know much about boats, but I like steel SO much better than fiberglass or wood. Steel doesn't crack when you hit something, it bends, and it's much stronger for point loads like where the cables for the mast connect. For the rust, I would get a sacrificial anode, like they do for submarines. It's usually a plate of magnesium that you connect to the steel electrically, and it oxidizes so the steel does not. Also you should get a Lincoln wire welder, and learn to weld. It's actually pretty easy to weld. Then you can patch things up with steel welds.

    • @OddLifeCrafting
      @OddLifeCrafting  Před 5 lety +1

      Lincoln wire is expensive, it’s a dream to have one. We have a Chinese brand weld machine. Hehe. We’re gonna change all the anodes that came with the boat. Thanks for the tips ☺️

    • @philgray1023
      @philgray1023 Před 5 lety +1

      Another thing Ellenor, almost everywhere in the world, there is a guy who can weld. In fibreglass if you want a new chainplate it can be a major, major pain to fabricate, bed in etc. On a steel boat you just weld a new one on.
