- We are back for another episode of the podcast and this one is special. I am joined today by none other than Ryan Dungey. He is a future hall of famer and a multiple time Motocross and Supercross champion. On top of this he is a Husband, father and he runs a foundation that supports children with cancer and introduces bicycles into the lives of underprivileged children.
Ryan was also the first person I ever recorded a podcast with all the way back in 2017. At that time the concept of Gypsy Tales wasn’t even born yet, but that chat ignited what has become a great joy and passion in my life and it was really cool to get to sit down again years later.
On this awesome episode of the podcast we talked about how far he has come since 2017, what he has learned since retiring from the sport, his comeback season in 2022, reflecting on his rivalry with Jason Lawrence, his experience trying out for Factory Suzuki, living with Ricky Carmichael, his friendship with James Stewart, his partnership with brands like Target and Nike and much more.
Ryan is a brilliant guy and this was a joy to do.

Love me some Dungey. Me and my pops went to Dilla in ‘17. So just post retirement and we were strolling the pits after the race and everyone’s packing up the ktm trailer, and there’s Dungey wiping down tables with a rag and helping the fellas load up. He actually saw us looking on in and came over and chatted for a few minutes. Got a photo with Ryan and he went right back to it. Always thought lil story showed his true Character.
Dung is and always has been such a humble, grounded, down to earth guy...... he's a fierce mf'n competitor lol, but a genuinely awesome guy. His work with St Jude is amazing ✌️
I once waited in line to talk to dungey when I was young at Indy supercross and he got busy and he was very apologetic when he couldn’t talk my father and I
@@InspectorButters4agreed what he’s done for St Jude had such a wave over the sport I’m glad the sport stuck with it.
He is a good man.
@@hudson8810 St Jude is just the best charity org hands down. I finally got my "Love Moto Stop Cancer" shirt this most recent SX season, but had been trying to get one since SX last year!! Hopefully the fact it took so long means that tons of people are donating and they just didn't have enough shirts to keep up! 😁✌️ RD is such a big reason it's grown like it has, he should be very proud!
One of the best SX/MX careers of all time. A lot of championships, a lot of money, and very few injuries. Everyone respected Ryan Dungey. Great ambassador for the sport. Hall of Fame for sure.
So I was about 13 and I could see Dungey rushing to the other side of his pits and I called him and he stopped everything he was doing, with Roger right next to him and he took a picture with me and he signed my little plate favorite rider of all time love you dung!!!!
"All you have in life is what you pay attention too" Fuck you are legend dude, that hits hard
So Simple but so true aye
@@gypsytalespodcast9369 Nostalgia
Always looked up to him on a bike, and he’s only been someone to look up to as a human. Loves God, loves his family. Knows what’s important. Ryan you’re a hero
Major respect for Ryan. The young guys today could learn a lot from him.
For sure aye!
@@gypsytalespodcast9369 Thanks for having him on, sir.
What a grounded, nice person. Much respect to Dungey. 🤟🏽
2005 Regional at Red Bud. Parked next to #212 Ryan Dungey. He didn’t have a pressure washer (or a water tank maybe-can’t remember) and used mine that weekend. He was battling all weekend with Dennis Jonon and ripping. Cool memory.
we need kenny roczen on this
Dude I'm sure Jase gets so tired of seeing this comment, lol but I do it every ep as well (at least 2 or 3x) 😂, and I'll keep asking for Kenny and JS7 to come on asap!! ✌️
When Kenny retires I hope he gets him on
now this is SICK. Dung is the guy!
Ryan dungey is the best human in the world and that's that!
He's bummed out..cause it's over
@@StevebuckBuckhe's rich and enjoying life he ain't bummed at all
@@MyName-yl2nc dude I was a pro ...when you ain't the man no more it's worse than anything bet me and call jim
I love this, even if it is on social media. I was never the biggest RD5 fan, mainly due his brand or other riders (Stew, RV, ET3) until his later years and the respect still grows. Best wishes RD.
Dungy is one of the coolest dudes ever. So down to earth and honest
One of the greatest that has ever been in this sport. Such a great (real) guy. Great listen!
One of the nicest people in the sport! Dungey is a great example for people to look up to. A genuine Christian and humble guy....
By far the best pod cast ever. Gypsy Tales you killed it. Dungy is an inspiration for all. For a nobody that loves his dirtbike and has followed since RJ till now , this has been real for me and I live my life to keep it real. Gypsy Tales 👏👏
Dungey was my favorite rider of all time as well. He was well spoken, professional, and not cocky. He might not have been the all out fastest but he was so consistent and rarely laid the bike down. His fitness was also very good and helped him excel in Outdoor. I was bummed when he retired and did not watch MX and SX much after that till recently. McGrath was the one who got me into it all though in the early 90's.
Dungey mentioning how the 450 suited him so well with the torque also reminds me of how Jett rides as the 450 suited him well. Jett also makes it look effortless.
I have to mention JS7 too of course. He was my favorite rider during his time as well. So exciting to watch.
I love the way dungey talks
Dung is the man !!
Just imagine how tough it would be to race against this guy? Even if you beat him you could never break him, you win he gets 2nd, you get 6th he wins, you get 3rd he wins, you win he gets 2nd etc. Dear god his competitors had to be terrified of him. The thought of being in a championship situation against RD5 had to be so daunting. Even if you could beat him on speed to know that the chances of one of you going down and throwing it all away is always there and that statistics would suggest it will be you and not him LOL! His consistency story is literally crazy 31 straight SX podiums. That is a record that will NEVER fall (IMO), dude was a complete monster.
So I'm 40 mins into this, I don't think RD realizes just how badass he was!!!! The guy is just so humble and blue collar. He doesn't realize that he's one of the greatest all time! Impressive!
Really enjoyed this one, Jase. Thanks for putting it together. "Risk is freedom, safety is slavery." -RD
nothing but support for everything your doing Jace! Keep at it man!
100%
And he asks all the best questions at the post-race press conferences
@@stevenlee89now that's a FACT!! Tbh he asks the only questions worth a damn almost every presser, everyone else asks the same old nonsense EVERY time lol
That was by far the best podcast that I watched from Gypsy! A huge respect for both of you guys for touching on so many topics besides racing and being so open about it. Even though it is almost three and a half hours long I would keep listening. Ryan is an incredible person and such an ambassador of the sport. Such a humble guy representing true sportsmanship, a real champion
DUUUDEEEE YES! my favorite rider of all time since 2010
Mine too
The first MX race I ever remember was Dungey winning in 2010 on the Suzuki. Been a die hard fan ever since. “How can you win a championship when the guy is on the podium every weekend”
Yes awesome!!! Ryan was one of the greatest in my book
I think I really started appreciating Dungey when he went to KTM and fought to win with that new program. It made him open up out of his comfort zone
And how many times did you EVER see this guy on the ground….of all the racing he’s done. Dude never crashes…that’s impressive.
Dungey thank you for being such an amazing guy and awesome inspiration
One of the interviews where it was so enjoyable before i knew it was over.
Thank you Ryan and Jace for this episode. Well done fellaz. The honesty on so many not easy to talk about aspects of the struggles of life in general is appreciated immensely. I have 4 sons and my 3 youngest raced amateur level for 7 yrs. Being that I live in Wisco we raced AMA Dist 16. And a few (Minnesota) Dist. 23 races. My kids were learning and wanted to get better. They needed instruction on how to race their bikes that I couldn't provide. At some of the races we were in Ryan was there too racing B class Dist 23 am. My kids were on 65s and 85 bikes back then. They'd wander over to his pit and ask him questions. He was friendly, polite, and went out of his way to give them advice and helpful tips about racing. We were all super stoked to learn he would be racing pro under the tent with Roger D. and R.C. Followed his career and absolutely have nothing but positive, great things to say about him. A true Champion in every aspect. God Bless you Ryan and your family. Thanks for the great memories. I took my kids out to Vegas for the Monster Cup race and we saw you race with a broken shifter. You had to shift while in the air with your hand. Your give it your 100% best you can with what you got attitude makes me smile. When you were on the Wheaties Cereal Box I went to our local Walmart and spent all the money I had and bought 5 boxes. My sons each got one as a xmas gift and I still have 2 unopened boxes. Im willing to trade a box for a pair of Nike boots. I hope to get to see you at Millville again some day. You are a hero. A legend. The planet needs more awesome humans like Ryan and Jace .
✌️n❤
T.L.E.
PS Thank you for talking about and giving praise to your Dads. I was a single, divorced, paying child support father who worked 50 plus hrs a week away from home. Had to drive 6 or more hrs just to get to work on Mon. mornings and then again to get home at the end of the work week. Then get 3 bikes prepped and ready and then drive to practice and or race. The nearest place to ride or race being 2 hrs one way. Looking back....idk how I did it. Between my sons and I 36 brkn bones. Hundreds of thousands in hospital bills. 4 season points Championships. No regrets.
This is the one! Been patiently waiting on this one, knew it was just a matter of time 🔥
I cannot wait to listen to this!
Lets go dunge! Favorite rider. Stay in the sport
Dungey was my all time favorite growing up, he invite my brother and I inside to Red Bull pro pits at high point back in the day. The same day that Chad reed refused to sign autographs it put into perspective on how some pros let the fame go to there head versus being humble like dungey. Best rider of all time imo
What a fuqing legend. Was more of an RV fan and those guys duals were by and far my favorite era of motocross. Dungey had a helluva career, Hall of Fame career and hope to see him around the industry more. Awesome episode 💯🙌🏼👊🏼
Truly the all American motocross hero. This guy will never be replaced or compared to Anyone else!
Man the part about not laying the bike down and Roger giving him the article about Raphael Nadal throwing his tennis racket, how you don't do that because there are people watching that can't afford these things....there are good people in this world
What Ryan Dungee has done for the children of St. Jude Hospital, to me, is Saint like.
Ryans got one in my books. Inspirational athlete and person always. Angel on a bike.
37 minutes in I just gotta say this podcast is the sickest dude I can’t believe someone is interviewing all my favorite riders and asking the questions I’ve always wanted to hear these guys answer! Cheers to never ending dirtbike talk!
Dungey is such a great role model as a racer and person in general.
All you have in life is what you pay attention to...Well said man
Thats a good quote for a tattoo
❤ Dungey
I love this shit bro I'm 44. I use to watch Stanton then Jeremy came in , lol I didn't have a bike so anyone I knew I clang to, whether it was a 3 wheeler or what the fuck ever, if it was off road I was in. Got my first bike, 1979 rm 125. I payed with all my snow shovels and yard mowing, I was living in dayton nv, talked my parents into co signing for a new whip( Iwas working at golf course) sorry so long but made it to intermediate, lost track and I know deegans saw his son was coming up and I'm now locked back in. I've watched all your shit and thank you for letting me to get to know the riders, this is very important, they just got helmets on. So helmets off! I love it thank you, you brought me back into the sport, I can't miss a race... let's go sexton( last to first) and get in in the danger zone baby
I’m 42 and right there with you
We need Mitch Peyton!
I see dungey and Arlington and i coulddnt belive how big he is his wing span is huge big shoulders .
The Legend himself
Favorite rider ever! Even though he's 10 years my junior. His autograph hangs in my office.
@ 2:04:34 damn JS7 was FEARLESS!!! His style was so much fun to watch 🤟
What a solid dude 👊🏻
Eli can just will the bike to do things, I seen Eli at Southwick. The old up hill corner that they had the dog house with the spike and chain for the jyd.
It was a 180 where the entry was parallel with the exit and the berm for the corner was the hill Eli was preloading off a bump on the entry of the turn after getting air whipped the bike side ways never touching the ground at the apex of the turn wheels hit the hill on the exit side of the turn pinned it as wheels touch down and gone. Believe this was his 2nd year 450 on Honda! Most impressive thing i've ever seen done during a race on camera or in person.
I remember going home and searching footage to see if it was Captured on camera, but no.
He did it twice at the end race.
I've Always wanted to ask eli if he remember
Yesss! Been waiting for this one to drop! Keep it up Gypsy!!!!
Best podcaster ever...ur KILLIN IT BRO...
Loved watching him race, dude was a savage on the bike
What a great dude🤘🏻
James wins 2015 if he doesn’t get suspended 2014 he had won 5 races that Suzuki was dialed & so was he
Love Dunge!!
Talking about JS7 and going freak fast - hangtown on the 125 battle with Stephan Roncada on the 250f.
My favorite 5 minutes of a Moto film was with Dungey. Moto 4 the 1st 5 minutes with dung at the goat farm. That shit was like a shot of motivation for me. I was always a Villopoto fan 1st but Dung was a close 2nd.
Awesome, always had a feeling ET3 coming up was part of it. Even that I think the sail was taking from ET3, he wanted to beat the one of the best to line up. RD5 always brought the determination. ET3 was the beast on the gas looking to eat him up. Thankful to see the great races & the work.
Then Chase goes 40th to 1st! Dunge kinda gave a visual of what it looked like for the other 39 guys.
Bro that worst to 1st was the best ride of Chase's career!! He almost crashed 1,000x but never slowed down or showed an ounce of fear..... if that Chase shows up with his KTM dialed in like that each weekend this championship is about to get very interesting!! His confidence is thru the roof now too, I can't wait for the next round! 😁
Think of all the battles this guy has been in dude was a great competitor
Awesome 👍
amazing podcast bro. thank you for these, helps more than you know
I see Dung on Gypsy Tales....👀 that's an INSTANT CLICK!!! Lol call me simple, but w/e I am so excited for this one.... Ryan is the man!! He does such amazing charity work too 🙏✌️ Please get Kenny or JS7 soon
Because of Dungey I've been a long time donor of St. Jude's, every month for the past seven years.
The Diesel..
*Golden rod lol
I mean this is gonna have to be the best Gypsy pod yet.
💙1:19:00 Chris LeDoux wrote a really good song about that situation in his life. Granted his sport was rodeo. But its still one of my all time favorite songs and im single lol
Its called "The Greatest Prize" p.s. I dont think Linsey wasted her life by NO MEANS! OL' SON!
Dungey is a Certified Legend. THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES. I met him at Thunder valley in 09 the year Tedesco went 1-1 lol i met him too. Both guys are super humble genuine good dudes🖤
Love it! Keep on keepin on
Dungey at lake whitney going 3-3 through the rhythm and Austin Miller going 4-2 it was sick
Roger decoster is to motocross what Nikki lauda is to F1.
Not a better person/champion!! All time favorite rider! Much respect👊
Jase keep killing it bro, love seeing another absolute LEGEND on the pod!!! Ryan is one of the GOATs of moto hands down ✌️ The guests have been amazing, but im still dying to see Kenny, JS7, or Eli come on!! 😂
We are working on all three of them ha. They will all happen at some point!
@@gypsytalespodcast9369 hell yeah dude.... love to hear it!! Everyone knows getting a good interview with Eli is like trying to catch a greased pig 🤣, but maybe he will make some time for the best freaking podcast in all of sports!! 🍻
@@gypsytalespodcast9369 Yessss Eli, please dont give up trying to get him.
Another awesome interview, Jase. Dungy is such a class act.
This guy is sooo humble, I think he doesn’t even realize the legend he is 😂
Dung you are a great champion mate . And as for Villo mate IMO my take is you were the reason he wanted to retire because you were so hard to beat.
When speaking of the greats and riding styles or line choices or one off speed of certain riders its crazy to think when James was on it he truly owned all of them. Rd raced this later generation but James raced everyone of them except MC.
You can just see feel the Jesus in this guy. A great representative for Christ and he used his platform so well to glorify God!!!
Pick up your bottom lip Ryan. I looked forward to watching you live. And your dragging your sorrows through this pod cast. I really thought you had more life in you,
Really love the part about the phones and social media. 🤙🍺
Hell ya dung! We love it! Please get Ken roczen on while he is out with injury! I need to know how he overcame his injuries and learn more about him like this interview
Yessss kings
I totally understand why R.D. would chastise Ryan for throwing his bike down. A pet peeve of mine is riders disrespecting the bike. The bike is the representative of the company that pays you, and the hard work of many people including the mechanic.
Good stuff. We need you back at the riders post race pressers,..................PALEEEEEEEESE!
The track is called Malagrotta
Dungey was a steady hammer, always there.
Stoked for this one Jase, also lighting is on point!! 😮💨 Appreciate the content as always 🔥
Appreciate it!
You can't even give RD a fat head he's very humble!!! Good dude
The lance part was hard to kiaten too. You didnt let him speak at all. Interrupted him 3 times he started a sentence. Relax bro people listen to theses to hear your guests not you.
I believe the reason Jace talked so much during that segment is because in his last podcast with Peter Park, Lance's former trainer, they talked a lot about Lance Armstrong and he gained a lot of information on the guy. Also, it's still his show either way, he's said before that if you like it, great. If not, you don't have to watch it
Great job Jace.
I wish Dung had done this interview after Chase went worst for 1st this past weekend in moto 2!! Id love to hear how stoked RD wouldve been on that ride! Also curious what they saw good and bad after Jetts monster crash
Dude i thought the same thing. It would’ve been a good conversation between the 2
Same
This was a good one
It's a bummer Ryan my uncle told me it never gets better again...and he was right
"ya thats gotta be shit" that was perfect man lol. I almost died from laughter
Less Go!!
Huge fan from day one! Which is ironic cause the Hurricane was my favorite rider from 78' until he retired. Can you say polar opposites? Must be mellowed with age, or is it a Midwest thing (we don't talk much).
Wish he could’ve took on Dakar or something like that in the years after motocross
Still my favorite rider to date
