- A little wander up and down Chard High Street (Fore Street) with some fabulous buildings and a little bit of history.
The weather was dismal and wet so would have looked so much better i the glorious sunshine but hopefully you can still see the fabulousness of it all!

Judge George Jeffreys figures prominently in M.R. James' tour de force ghost story "Martin's Close". Chills me to the bone every time I read it and thus I cannot but heartily recommend it.
What a charming town, with a wealth of lovely buildings. Burning down did it the world of good :-/
It's meant to be having a renovation (new leisure centre, pool etc) but the pandemic seems to have put a threat to that (been promised for years...may never happen :-( )

You will also be amazed that the old workmans club cellor go straight up town under the building as for the museum I've lived here when met Nigel Stoodley who saved my life God bless his soul so I thought was 1999 Christmas day when I ran away from bridgwater and I've been never looked back I love the slow pace of life the people you get to know the kindness now that is the magic, so yes 22 years ago and museum must not like me as it's always shut just had a new swimming centre built in chard town the school is private so cost a lot of money for each pupil but behind is holyrood academic school I would not say that is was a good high school but we do have 22 hairdresser so no need to worry about making an appointment I know that a couple of years back we had around 17.000 +people live hear just need more choices of shops hairdresser charitys just doesn't cut we need fresh ideas while keeping historical buildings blended in woruld be nice to have a shopping mall, md KFC train station back we are expanding sometimes its good to think outside of the box x

Thank you Simon, yes it was a different one for a change...i have one like this planned for the future as have ot all ready (lockdown stopped the trip) but if I come across any fab places on my travels with Paul I will definitely not be afraid to do another one like this. I was worried it wouldn't work. But folks seem to have enjoyed it! 🥰👍
Fantastic video. People say high streets are generic but as my dad taught me look above the shop signs and some amazing buildings. Some even have the original signs in tiles

May be apocryphal but Chard is on a watershed so could be true. Certainly on one side the River Isle runs into the Bristol Channel whilst not far on the other side of town is the Axe running into the English Channel.

It was lovely, and didn't detract fro. The buildings at all. When we were walking I didnt even know how much history there was, I was just loving the buildings! 🥰👍
When in Somerset visit Hatch Beauchamp, where you can find the grave of the gallant Colonel John Rouse Merriott Chard, Royal Engineers, VC, the officer commanding Rorke's Drift, a field hospital and stores deport on the Natal (British) side of the Buffalo river, in the 1879 Anglo-Zulu war, where about 130 British soldiers, many of them sick and wounded, fought off about 4,500 Zulu warriors in a over 12 hour battle, winning eleven Victoria Crosses.

Good to know the difference between a "listed building" and a "listing building", although you sometimes find the two together, as in Canterbury:

What a wonderful video about a wonderful looking village! I'm curious about why and how they built over the passage ways between buildings. I would have thought the open passage would act as a fire break to prevent a fire like the one that almost completely destroyed the village. The white building on the left of your favorite Tudor building indicates to me that they owned the property, so they were responsible for it. Richard Vorbes does videos about walking through villages and I noticed the same covered passages, so I'll have to ask him as well.

Chard also had a festival for a few years that was unusual.

@@thewhitewickmixtape Chard Festioval of Women in Music. Sadly it was over ambitious and went bust after the 6th. They were held every two years. We met some interesting musicians some of whom stayed with us such as the drummer from Toyah's band and a couple of Latvian cellists!

Go to Goathland [Aidensfield in Heartbeat] and catch the steam train.
As for Chard? All wet and gloomy does nothing for those towns.
