Cannibal Review, Lagoon Hyper Coaster with a Beyond Vertical Drop | Built In-House!

- Cannibal is one of the most unique roller coasters in the world. Most of the coaster was designed, engineered, and manufactured in-house. The ride opened stands over 200 feet tall and it opened with the tallest beyond vertical drop in the world. It also opened with the steepest vertical drop in America at 116 degrees!

@Canobie Coasters A few Corrections.
Dal Freeman, the park’s Director of Engineering, worked on every ride beginning with Wild Mouse in 1998.
Dustin Allen, the current Director of Engineering, came to Lagoon from S&S during the development of BomBora.
Lagoon found ART Engineering AFTER they could not find a Family Coaster from any existing Manufacturer that they liked. Dal was confident they could do it themselves and the Ownership agreed.
Dal’s first ground up Coaster project for Lagoon was Wicked, which started in 2004. Lagoon shopped around their concept and found a partner in ZIERER. Stengel gets the credit for the Design even though their involvement was limited to technical calculations.
Petersen, Inc. fabricated the Columns for BomBora, Cannibal, the new ride, and even repaired Wicked’s Columns.
Intermountain Lift, Inc. fabricated the track for BomBora, Cannibal, and the new ride.
Lagoon actually would have liked the Columns and Track for Bat and Wicked fabricated locally by Petersen and Intermountain. The Station and Shop building for Wicked is actually from Petersen as well.
Dal Freeman (Lagoon), Dustin Allen (Lagoon), and Georg Behringer (ART Engineering) are credited with the Design and Engineering. Dustin also holds patents in regards to Cannibal.
Lagoon has been clear in regards to Cannibal being a collaboration between them and ART Engineering. BomBora, however, does not have an ART Builder’s Plate.
BomBora’s trains also have onboard lighting as well as sound.
Thanks for the clarifications on the deisgnwork, support work, and ART Engineering. That makes sense how ART was founded.
@@CanobieCoaster I should further clarify that Dal and Lagoon’s ownership decided they [Lagoon] could do it [BomBora] themselves and ART was recommended to them as a partner. ART actually does a lot of work for other manufacturers.
How the H-E-Double Hockey Stick do you know all that?! Very impressive!
Cannibal is the main reason why I wanna visit Lagoon. The fact that the park built it themselves is mind-blowing!
@thunderWolf Might as well be.
Let me be the first to tell you not to write off their flat rides or Bombora, they have some great flats and Bombora is probably the best family coaster I've ever been on
It's fantastic.
Don't dismiss the old Schwarzkopf coasters either. There is something about hearing the roar of colossus that I just love.
@@crystaldragon141 Colossus was the 2nd best coaster in the park imo, those loops are the best I've ever experienced. If Wicked's 2nd half was better it'd probably get the #2 spot over Colossus.
I've always loved the visuals of the dive loop, flipping over the ferris wheel to give a good sense of height.
It is neat.
I think that it alone will be worth the trip. I have been so impressed that Lagoon built this themselves, especially hearing all the great reports from everyone who has ridden it. I would be very happy if Lagoon built a clone of this at Frontier City. I will never stop with the crazy unrealistic wishes for Frontier City.
This would certainly be sweet at Frontier City.
A slightly scaled-down Cannibal would actually be a great fit there!
I got to ride this three times when I first visited a couple of years ago and I was amazed at how good it was for an in house built coaster. The tribal drums as you are on the elevator lift creates a lot of suspense for what's coming and is a great touch!
It's fantastic.
ive been on this ride many, many times, and the pause right before the drop never fails to scare the absolute hell out of me, it was also the first coaster id ever been on (i previously had a very intense fear of them) i highly recommend that everyone who visits lagoon rides it at least once
It's an excellent ride.
Great Video! This is probably the best in house coaster in the world. A 116 degree drop on a hyper coaster with an elevator lift and weird inversions like an oddly profiled Immelmann and a lagoon roll makes for a weird coaster.
Hard to disagree with it being the best in-house coaster.
I was so hoping after you posted the POV you’d do a proper review. This has been on my list for a while.
Also, if you visited on Halloween weekend and posted this on Wednesday, that’s an impressively fast turnaround! Wow!
I visited a few weeks ago.
HUGE bucket list coaster for me! Looks incredible!
It's fantastic.
This ride is so so so much fun
It's fantastic.
“Swimmingly for Lagoon” that was smooth
Thank you.
Cannibal is an absolute masterpiece. A hyper this good with quality inversions makes it unquestionably elite
It's so unique.
A weird name and theme but boy oh boy, this ride by just watching a POV terrified me as a GP. I almost couldn't watch the POV it was insane. The elevator lift in the dark, and the door at the top not knowing how high you are till you drop down a 200 ft 116 degree drop. That is just unreal.
That drop is insane.
I'm really looking forward to the full park review; Lagoon is an exceptional park with some quirks you really only see at an independent park (like being able to bring your own food in, and boy do the crowds take advantage of that) and their ride lineup is deep and diverse. Since you were there last month I'm also anticipating some Frightmares content in the park review, and I'm hoping you were as impressed as I was with a couple of the houses. The upcharge show Séance: The Dark Ritual was some of the best entertainment I've ever seen at a park.
I've visited this park twice, both during Frightmares. I'll have a review in a few months.
My brother and I had a 4 park tour I decided we needed to do. Three small parks adventureland, lost island and Indiana beach. Love the small independent parks. Kings island was the other which also is amazing
this is my favorite roller coaster in the world
It's my favorite at this park.
The real genius of this ride is how crazy compact it is. Lagoon has been making some very interesting thoughtful design decisions that really set them apart from every other park out there, like the midway design too, and the general layout of the park with everything being so distinct and separated (picnic, wild west town, museum district, zoo, flat rides/coasters. Right now they're working on their most ambitiously themed area but they're smartly taking their time with a talented team, which is awesome, this park should be insane in the future and it's already one of the best out there
Also ps review bombora lol
I really like this park. There won't be a review for Bombora at this time though.
I feel really validated having this as my top bucket list coaster. It looks so daunting and impressive!! I wonder what thrill coaster Lagoon will come up with next!
I'm excited to see.
@@CanobieCoaster Lagoon's newest coaster, it's supposed to open this season.

This past summer I was able to lap this ride six times in a row this in addition to 4 other rides that same day. I'll say this, there is a slight difference between the front and the back on the first drop. The front feels more like hangtime at the start of the drop while the back is more like as you described, but it is a subtle difference. When I first rode this I thought this was such a wonderfully bizarre coaster that proves that airtime isn't everything.
I agree there is a subtle difference between the front and back, but it isn't too noticeable because of the trim and short trains.
I rode this ride 16 times in one visit when we drove over to utah to visit my cousins! The line remained under 10 minutes all day and every ride was worth the drive from california! What a swashbuckler! 😎🤙☄️
Sweet!
2:15 I feel like this was a direct response to me lol. If it is thanks man, that definitely clears up all the confusion.
You aren't the only one.
Best ride EVER! OMG THIS RIDE IS AWESOME
Best ride there!
This is my fav ride at lagoon and I’m glad it’s at my home park
Nice!
I was shocked at how quickly that line moved when I went. It took less than 8 minutes to go through a line that would averagely take 30.
They don't mess around when it comes to capacity at Lagoon.
This is one of my top bucket coasters! I can't wait for the day I'm able to drive out all the way to utah to ride this!
It's worth it.
I sure am an amazing ride!
Indeed
So darn cool.
Indeed.
It's weird, I don't like immelmans much either, but adore dive loops, which are just the reverse of them lol. This was a very fun coaster and that double barrel roll hangtime was delicious.
The inversions are great. With Immelmanns, I find they tend to be lighter on force than I like. But a lot of newer ones are better since the exits have been snappier.
Art engineering is actually Lagoon’s company! They either partially or fully own it, even though it’s German. A Canada’s wonderland rep told me this on a tour of WMG.
Thanks for explaining!
Lagoon Corporation Inc. does not partially own ART Engineering.
Nice review Canobie 👌
Thanks 👍
One of the most fun coasters I’ve ever been on
I will say though, the vague “jungle or Africa or South America or Asia or something idk” theming is a little silly and cringey, but that doesn’t take away from the ride, that’s mostly in the loading area.
It sure is.
soo good
Sure is.
this is by far one of the best coasters in the US. Its a top 25 for sure for me
It's wonderful.
his is my number 1 coaster
Nice!
I live in Utah so I've ridden it over 200 times and I love it
Also I went Halloween weekend and it wasn't that busy
Nice!
Cannibals immelmann seems to be shaped quite differently from most others. It only starts to rotate out when it‘s already in a quite steep drop. Most immelmanns already start rotating at the apex.
True, this one carries the half loop all the way up and over.
First comment let’s goooo! I would love to ride this, I’m yet to ride anything beyond vertical so this looks amazing
cedar point kid has never ridden maverick?
This one is fantastic.
@@timk987 I haven't been to cedar point since I got over my fear of coasters. I like cedar point but I got over my fear of coasters at six flags great america. I've been to cedar point 6 times but all I've ridden was blue streak and iron dragon
I heard some of the supports were directly from Volcano the blast coaster as an homage. The inverted intamin launch coaster which now is defunct from Kings Dominate.
That would be interesting, but didn't this open before Volcano closed?
I soooo wanna find an excuse to get to Lagoon! (I got a coworker who lives in Utah; gotta think of a good excuse to have to see him in person.)
Hope you can get out there!
This whole time I thought this was a Gerstlaurer!
Nope!
Me too, looks like a sister to Kärnan, Hansapark.
I would honestly love to go there and I also heard that the Halloween event there is very good I’m gonna assume that you did the Halloween event that evening?
Both my visits to this park have been during Frightmares. It's a good event for a regional park.
I wonder if Hyperia will take the record for tallest beyond vertical drop, it's taller but whether it's gonna be technically beyond vertical or not is currently unknown
The drop looks incredible regardless.
In that coaster I definatly need a shoulder covering seatbelt!!!!!!
The lap bar is very secure and safe.
@@CanobieCoaster but there where some accidents, in other coasters far less dangerous... 🤔😱 like "superman" f. exc.
What do you think about the shin guards on Cannibal at Lagoon and the shin guards on Coast Rider at Knott's Berry Farm?
What are the differences between them in the shape?
Coast Rider's are bad since they dig into your legs. The ones on Cannibal give way more room.
My vision kept blacking out shortly on the end of the last helix.
Nice!
It's a great ride, but I wouldn't say it's elite. I love hangtime, but I don't really enjoy slow rolls, as you awkwardly get sideways hangtime for most of the roll. I have it ranked above Batman the Ride at SFMM, and right below Great Bear at Hersheypark. Also, as for smoothness, most of my rides have been very smooth, but a few years ago, I had some rides that felt like the ride was running octagon wheels.
Both my visits have had glass smooth rides. Sounds like you got unlucky.
Does Cannibal at Lagoon have a longer track length than Coaster Express at Parque Warner Madrid? What do you think?
No
Much shorter.
Didn't ART engineering help with this ride?
And great review looks like an amazing coaster!
Okay lol I think I am deaf, you meantioned it in the review xD
Yes, they did the trains and I believe consulted with some of the design work.
Imagine going to ride again a coaster at knott's berry farm with shin guards, how would you compare that to cannibal?
Coast Rider's shin guards are awful. Cannibal's are fine.
In germany we have a coaster like this called Kärnan, Hansapark.
Karnan is far more intense, but it has a few similarities.
Curious where the Lagoon Roll would go on your Top 50 Inversions (presuming you hadn't already ridden Cannibal before making that list)
I believe I put it on there.
@@CanobieCoaster Ah, looked back through and looks like you looped it in with other slow barrel rolls. But idk, the mid-element reverse in direction seems like it would be a pretty distinct sensation.
“Things seemed to go swimmingly for Lagoon” lol don’t think we don’t see what you did there
I actually didn't mean to have a pun haha.
i have been on dis
Nice!
How can they build a smooth coaster while some coasters build by dedicated companies fail to be smooth even upon opening.
Care and expertise.
PLEASE POV THIS
I posted one already.
first!
Nice!
Built in house ≠ bad!!!!
I agree.
As a Utahn, Lagoon is an embarrassment to the entire Amusement park and theme park industry. First of all Lagoon didn't build the mountains, so they shouldn't get credit for that. Second the Freeds should've taken the hint in the 50's when the park burned down and abandoned it. I wouldn't rate Lagoon in the top thousand Amusement parks and theme parks. I can't wait for the day Cannibal and Wicked are torn down.
I still give credit to a park when they can use natural beauty to its advantage. I've had nothing but positive visits here.
Lol someone's mad
dude definitely got kicked out💀
