- This is how to sharpen your Reel Rollers Revolution 26. If you are struggling to cut grass cleanly or it is not passing the “paper test” this is a perfect way to get you back to cutting cleanly again.
**Note, sometimes just tightening that reel to bedknife slightly is all you need to get it cutting paper again.
STEP 1: clean mower and reel thoroughly
STEP 2: take side cover off
STEP 3: test current sharpness with paper
STEP 4: tighten bedknife slightly to make reel to bedknife contact
STEP 5: while spinning reel, “paint” on compound (2-3 minutes per grit)
STEP 6: wash away compound
STEP 7: make sure there is light reel to bedknife contact and paper test
STEP 8: MOW!
Tools/materials used:
*Rubber chock or wood block for safety*
13mm socket
3/8 extension and handle (for adjusting bedknife)
3/8 drive adapter (for drill)
Corded or battery powered drill
Printer paper
80 or 120 grit lapping compound (80 for dull, 120 for honing and maintenance)
Heavy degreaser for cleaning reel
Detail brush to help with cleaning reel
Received my Rev 26 last week, Let’s go!!!! Thank you for the helpful videos. Appreciate it 100%!
great content thanks for posting, I've been a McLane guy but looking at the Revolution.
That's easy enough to do. 😮
Thanks Lawn Dad!
Thanks for hammering on the don't overturn these screws, I have a tendency to do that, lol
NOT ALOT OF TURN. NOT ALOT! Ha
1. Great content, love the channel. 2. Definitely getting one, i've been getting by with a rotary for a few years now, but gonna hopefully go big next year and upgrade; don't want to do so before I get irrigation though since i'll be going lower. 3. Most importantly.....if you have to do 2 passes, 80 and 120 Grit, do you recommend washing off the 80 before going to the 120? Assuming yes.
Did you flood your engine laying it back like that?
Love it. Going forward, I wonder if there is an easier way for the side cover to be attached so you don't need a socket (maybe a quick connect snap or something).
Maybe! But it’s not a common thing to take off the cover, so I don’t mind it being 3 easy screws. Sounds like we need people to get their mowers to make videos on their own hacks 😅
How do you clean out the grass from the chain housing?
Is your Rev 26 reel to bed-knife staying put? I would adjust my tolerance to cut paper, but as soon as I run the reel it would loosen. It’s like the bolt doesn’t stay tight. I would have to tighten it before every mow, by the end of the mow the reel would loosen again and just bends the paper… moreover, it doesn’t give the grass a clean cut, on the left side of my pass would always bend/fold the grass….sigh
Do the bed knife adjusting bolts kind of clock like on a greensmaster?
question on bolts to tighten reel to bed knife. it looks like on video Lee P did on new features that there are two bolts on each side.i only see one on each side in this video. What am I missing.I get the only a tiny bit turn part lol.
Would have been very helpful if you had the camera at an angle where we could actually see the bolts you were tightening for the reel to bedknife adjustment. When you had the camera up, form watching, it was unclear what bolt you were pointing at with your socket.
2:32-4:26 (almost 2 minutes of explanation) I am pointing and explaining multiple times (clearly) the only 2 bolts on camera that can even feasibly be bolts that would make sense to tighten in the entire video. I’m trying to understand how to make this video any more clear. There’s only 2 bolts. Spending 2 minutes explaining them. Help me help you 😅
Put the camera closer and actually show you doing the tightening. He’s right. You need to show more close ups in your videos and not just talk and point.
@@TheLawnDad Obviously not that clearly, or myself and others would not have commented on your lack of clarity in the video.
How often should we be backlap-ing?
Really only about 2-3x max per year. Not something that is done consistently. I typically will check reel to bedknife after a big scalp, after topdressing and towards the end of the season. I typically get my reel sharpened 1x per year as well. But if you only mow 1-2x per week, you can get away with a professional sharpening every few years.
HURRY UP BOAT!
😂 I know man I’m wishing it to go in overdrive for y’all
i know. All 264 of our mowers are probably just waiting at the port in an anchored freight-liner just waiting to be received. Lee and co paid an premium %25 on shipping just to get it 15 days soon. container is getting routed to the port of LA then shipping by freight from LA to Buford,Ga.
Where do I get that jackstand?
TJ is using a chalk block off amazaon but Reel Rollers sells an official steel stand on their website which prevents the mower from tilting too far back during backslapping.
Per Lee Purcell (owner of RR)
“This is something everyone should be cautious of at all times with any gas engine (reel mower). Please please please NEVER lay the mower back on its handlebars (engine horizontal). We suggest no more than 45 degrees. Whenever you backlap, please FIRST shut the fuel valve off. 2nd, please do not prop mower up beyond 45 degrees because oil and gas will mix in the engine. Then you will have the pull start cord lock up, have to remove the spark plug, drain fluids, etc. Save yourself the frustration. Tip 45 degrees or less.”
Yep I’m one of those ones that put together ikea furniture without reading the instructions LOL. Lee is accurate according to engine manufacturer. Tilt it no more than 45° to avoid the chance of oil and gas potentially mixing. I did have this on 3 2x6’s (not shown) so it was up and for a very short period. But yes. The reel stand from RR is an excellent thing to have or making your own!
Much better than a Trucut but no where near as easy as a JD 220Ecut
I dont like how most people advocate doing reel to bedknife adjustments by "feel".
People need to get in the habit of using feeler gauges every single time adjustments are made to keep the reel true for as long as possible.
I’m just a DIY guy. And it works for me. I get them professionally ground and serviced yearly so the chances of me messing anything up are very slim.
Just because you’re a DIY guy shouldn’t keep you from learning what manufacturers recommend. Your GM 1000 says the reel shouldn’t even touch the bedknife. And also I just listened to Lee at reel rollers say with Ron Henry you shouldn’t have much contact at all and should be testing cutting with card stock not paper. I’m a DIY guy to but I want to do like manufacture recommends. Let’s not define “DIY guy” as just doing whatever feels good. Let’s educate people on what manufacturers say should be done. My 2 cents.
A ratchet will just fine. I guess lawn guys depend on “screw guns”. 😅
