    Basically Faruk has had a breakdown and needs quiet, rest and a stress free environment to recuperate. It’s like men who walk away from their marriages because they think their spouse is the problem when really they have built a life that no longer serves them. They end up causing unnecessary pain when what they really need is therapy and support.

When he got the signals that people depended on him are now capable to manage their affairs and are okay with out him, he get shocked why he is there and for what. As he says he never considered himself what he wants but only to make decisions for and consider the well-being of his family. Which is a requirement but deep within he never did things solely for himself.

      Such a special man and a much needed voice of reason for this family. How he actually accepted Esma back into his life after all those many years apart is a wonder to behold. He was able to witness the kind of woman she'd become in those years and in my opinion, it isn't a pleasing sight. So much drama. So much histrionics over everything. So insistent that things go as she wants, or she will make everyone pay a big price. Too much pride. Not enough compassion or anything that resembles humility.

      Faruk's resignation is his decision to make, but I feel it is not right for him to not discuss the matter and his reasons for leaving beforehand with his wife and let her know in advance before telling his brothers & family. His shocking unilateral decision is really insensitive and disregarded his wife's feelings. In marriage, communication is key. Faruk has been cold and distance towards his wife and neglected his marriage & own family for sometime, plus the Ozgur's drama was just too much for Sureyya to handle, thus this action of him was like the final straw.

Every time Faruk hide something he has a lot of time to tell his wife, I feel like when it comes to be honest with his wife he’s not good at it. Everytime Sureyya hide something to Faruk most of the time she couldn’t speak because of circumstances (Esma&Garip dating or Esma illness) the fact that Faruk did that several time shows that he’s not learning or trying to change this behavior. I like this about the series. It's realistic. Esma has changed a lot but she hasn't truly learned all the lessons she needs to, such as letting go of control, as you mentioned. This will keep popping up in different situations until she finally masters it. Alzheimer's is a great teacher for her because she will lose all control. In life, we re-learn the same lessons over and again, long after we think we've "learned" them. Unconditional love, for example, can be learned through the birth of a child, betrayal of a friend, infidelity, etc. We think we know what it means and then another situation comes to teach us we know very little and gives us an opportunity to grow more.

    Everyone in this show has a cross to bear or a battle to fight. So human. Like the rest of us. So far, most have managed to find a way to grow to a higher level. Even Ipek has recognized her own demons, which is so hard to believe. Even Begum, who was a total victim archetype, recognized by the end that it was her own doing not to stay with Faruk, not Esma's. After all Surraya had even a worse treatment and stayed, as Faruk said to Begum in her office. Esma appears to have the hardest time to change. In Turkish culture, it is so unusual for a grandmother and mother of four adult sons to marry again. Her sons accepted it against all cultural obstacles. But she cannot give them the same curtesy. I can understand her hesitation about Fikrit running their company to ground, but she does that to Osman too. The three persons who have had control and bitterness issues got physically ill: Esma has dementia, Begum had cancer, Adam's mother and Elfet had full blown psychiatric issues. As the story is coming to an end, it appears to me that the lessons are primordial: forgiveness is a virtue for those who have done us wrong, but more importantly for our own sake; no one forces us to do something we don't agree to do: not Esma, not Uzgur's friend, etc; we are the architects of our own destiny and along the way for any gain we get we have to pay a price; controlling others and everything around us will run us to ground with exhaustion and leave us bitter and sick; and so many other lessons in life are hidden in this beautiful story. So many archetypes. Interesting that the first episode started with Surraya reading the book "women who run with wolves." It is all about different female archytypes, and the writer showed so many of them in this story. I think that is what I like the most about this series. Although it shares the common theme of Turkish series with a rich powerful man and his family, with the poor little girl love story, it went beyond that superficial scenario that is becoming too boring to watch. It engaged stereotypes (secretaries seducing their bosses) and archetypes.

      @@sophiekamveris4966 What I meant, but did not express correctly, is the theme of rich powerful men with poor little girls love story so common in Turkish series that after watching a couple of series it becomes redundant and boring. I must say I have seen only four of their series. This one is by far the most engaging because it shows so much of our human story. This series is hardly boring. Faruk's character is actually extremely interesting to watch how a rich powerful man has so much vulnerability and how he so willingly confronts his demons. Not common to see men in any culture and economic class do that. And Syurraya is hardly a little poor girl. She has a very strong archetype, never a victim, never keeps grudges, never manipulative, creative and artistic, not frightened by not having money, independent, and also vulnerable because of her past story with her parents (I have watched the Spanish version, which has such different translations in some of the most important dialogues).

      I agree, but I don't think Faruk fought for the things that matter, such as his wife and children. He put all his energy to fight for a WHOLE family. Ok, it's good to fight for our family, but at a certain moment, we can't oblige everyone to be together if they don't want. Did he think he was God ? It was a fight lost at the beginning. In life, we need to know our place in order to protect our mental health. We can't keep everyone happy. Yeah, we need to be selfish sometimes, and just take care of our closest family.

    Esma's anger must be a contributing factor to her dementia. All that elevated blood pressure, inflammation, fight and flight catabolic hormones and neurotransmittors. She has not yet learned to let her children live their lives. It is so exhausting to control everything and everyone around you. She is paying the price. I understand that she knows Firket and Adam may run the company to ground. Especially Fikret who is still a time bomb ready to explode. Adam will be able to control him. And Faruk alluded to that once in one of the previous episodes.

      Good analysis. She's running herself into the grave with her hysteria. As you said, she cannot stop trying to control everything, keep up appearances, etc. This is definitely a cultural issue because when she grew up (and in Turkey) there was no chance she could have worked outside the home with her social status. Her mode of survival was to keep the family reputation intact and raise her sons to manage a successful business. It must be hard to let that go when they've only been back in the mansion a matter of months. What Adem did was really out of control and insane. It's amazing anyone trusts them. I love what you said about Faruk breaking up the cycle, enabling Emir to forge his own path and taking the responsibility of living his own life.

    • @mehrnaz4288
      @mehrnaz4288 Před 2 lety +1

      @@nicn9776 There may be some cultural issues, but the theme of unhappy mothers/wives controlling their sons goes back to Ancient Greece and the myth of Odipus. This series is far from other superficial Turkish series. The writers have done their homework. The sessions with the therapist, the stereotypes, the societal double standards about the same behaviors committed by men and women, the conflict between individual will and familial/societal expectations, and the female archetypes representing every one of us, all say that there is a lot of deep understanding of literature, mythology, and cultural symbols that have gone into the writing of scripts.
      Such deep understanding is seen usually in Iranian movies, not Turkish series.

    • @nicn9776
      @nicn9776 Před 2 lety +12

      @@mehrnaz4288 This series is well written partly because it's based on a combination of real-life stories: 1) Counseling by Dr. Gülseren Budayıcıoğlu (a renowned Turkish psychiatrist) with a schizophrenic patient and; 2) from key events from singer Ülkü Üst's life. Viewers rave about the psychoanalysis in the series and it's not surprising because it's adapted from consultations by Dr. Budayıcıoğlu with her long-time patients (in this case, adapted from her book, "Hayata Dön" (Return to Life). The screenwriters gave Sureyya moderate characteristics from the main character of the book and the more dramatic representation of the schizophrenic patient was transferred to Ipek in the TV series. I have started to listen to the book (it's on CZcams if you speak Turkish). The general skeleton of the story is based on the life of Ülkü Üst, a singer in the 1970s band Beyaz Kelebekler (White Butterflies). She was also a seamstress, who later opened her own fashion house. Ali Sarpkan, the son of a wealthy family from Bursa, fell in love with Ülkü and they married, with the condition that she would quit performing on stage. Ülkü had a difficult upbringing (her father died when she was young and her mother remarried). At the beginning of her marriage, her mother-in-law didn't accept her although later they had a close relationship. The Sarpkan's family business ran into financial difficulties but the brothers were not able to successfully manage new business opportunities. The couple divorced after he cheated on Ülkü. So, I think those two elements of genuine real-life events are what helped the writers be able to make this series so unique with so much depth. The original musical scores and top hits from some of the best Turkish singers also set this series apart.
