@@masterlight2 I'm not a knowledgeable person of US jurisdiction since i live on a country with a totally different system, but the fundamentals are the same. To not make it too long.
Is about involvement of the person on the crimes. At lot of aspect are considered to justify who get the harder punishment.
Planning, Action, reasons, continuous crimes, hiding, post mortem, will, the brutality of the crimes, if they were kids involved. My point is... They are so many conditions that determine the severity of the punishment.
You can't put the same level of blame on someone who only helped hiding the bodies, or helping this person to not get caught vs the person who willingly committee the crimes itself.

Apparently, Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo videotaped parts of their crimes, which showed that Karla was a co-conspirator. However, Bernardo was also very violent toward Karla. There is an infamous photo of Karla after she went to the police with two HUGE, gruesome black eyes. She used her husband's abuse as a way of manipulating the criminal investigation and the police didn't search diligently enough to find all the evidence. They saw her as another victim of Bernardo.
She made her plea deal and it was accepted by the court. Then the videotapes were found and the police pretty much said, Aw, shit! They couldn't renege on the deal they made with this Devil and she "served her time" and was released. I consider her having children, after what she did, to be CHILD ABUSE!

The irony is women get away with murder more and get lesser sentences because of sexism. People still can’t accept the idea that women are capable of such violence so when women kill they are less likely to be suspected (this is actually one of the reasons it takes female serial killers longer to get caught) and when they are partners in crimes they are believed to be the submissive partner even in cases where this is not the case (Alvin and Judith Neelly, Fred and Rose West).

I'm happy that James and Jennifer Crumbley were punished to the fullest extent of the law in Michigan. While their son Ethan is serving multiple life sentences; his parents are serving I think twenty to twenty-five years each for Manslaughter. Even though they are not directly responsible for the deaths at Oxford High School; they knew their son was troubled but did nothing to intervene. A lot of people have remarked that Ethan should have gotten the Death Penalty; but this wouldn't have been possible owing to two key factors. First off, Ethan Crumbley was fifteen years old at the time of the shooting; therefore his age would have shielded him from Capital Punishment due to a decision by the US Supreme Court in the 2005 case of Roper v. Simmons. Secondly, Michigan is an anti Death Penalty state; having been the first state in the US to abolish Capital Punishment in the nineteenth century.
