Hey everyone! I just want to start by saying I was overwhelmed with the support I received for the first video. I’ve only even become aware of this genre within the past year or so, and to see my first effort in becoming a part of the video essay world receive such kind words has been amazingly encouraging. I’ve been working on a follow-up for a while now, and though it’s been a difficult process, I’m equally excited to hear y’all have to say about my thoughts on The Eric Andre Show. When my friends first showed me The Eric Andre Show, I was a little turned off by some of the crazier moments, but the more I watched the more I grew to love his insanity. Quick summary: I’m hoping to shift the narrative on Eric Andre from a type of television prankster to a traditional trickster archetype. I think the way he randomly shifts from one thing to the next is more in the tradition of Bugs Bunny than of shows like The Tom Green Show or Jackass. To frame this conversation, I show how he steps up a certain “logic” in a situation and then shatters that logic for the next over and over again, both to confuse and surprise his victims. I think video essays too often fall into the trap of trying to create a huge overarching theory for a show, as if were something with a single answer, instead of just digging into its style. I agree that Andy Kaufman should be here, though the "Eric Andre is in Hell" was made for fun, as stated as literally the first line in the video! It's actually a fun little exercise in applying logic to something without it.
Well, i get what you are saying... But the fact that something was made for fun doesn't mean it can be criticized. I was just expressing my personal subjective opinion mulato. Personally i don't like when theories are: Coma, dreams, acid trips, acid dreams, hell, heaven, purgatory, etc. It is a really easy place to pick up something from because you can virtually do it with everything.

When im high this is literally my thought process, I like that i can watch the show be as random as i think.
I thibk the eric andre show is less about the bits and jokes and more about making the intervieweee (or whatever someone being interviewed is called) and audience uncomfortable. Its schaudenfraude (i know i didnt spell that right) based on that uncomfortable moment when a homeless drunk puts his arm around you and tells you he loves you on the street. The piece that put ths together for me was watching interviews of eric. He conducts himself awfully but less by using clever bits and more just attempting as hard as possible to derail the interview. When he sucessfully cracks or doesnt crack the interviewer he laughs. The whole point (i think) is to disect a person by toturing them to give a genuine reaction. He said in one of them (wish i could remember) that he loves making people uncomfortable and in a diffenert one told a story about how he would do random things in school to impress people. Its a joke only for yourself, making someone uncomfortable so you can laugh at them. I love it. Liked your video.
TLDR/thesis: the eric andre show is about making people uncomfortable so you can laugh at them just like fail videos or jackass.
This video made me curious to check out a few episodes of the show. All I have to say is thanks to this video for introducing to me to my knew favorite show. It has all my favorite things rolled into one show: surrealism, absurdity, and slapstick comedy. And it all his delivers. Every episode I watch does not fail to get a laugh out of me and from the start of title to the end credits I am in stitches. Once again, thank you for making this video. I never knew what I was missing.
Wow. This actually made me appreciate Eric as an artist and entertainer. I never realised how much effort and "trickery", as you put it, it took to screw with not only the guest's head, but our own. Beautiful vid

hey mike, i appreciate your honesty, but next time I'd prefer you write this as your own separate comment that confronts ME directly as opposed to confronting someone who enjoyed the video. I understand that a number of people have been frustrated with my analysis, and while I personally disagree with the majority of those critiques (which are usually based on a false reading of my analysis or a false understanding of what it means to analyze something in the first place), I do still encourage this type of spirited debate. In wading through the mostly unhelpful critiques, I have actually found a few that will help me improve my channel going forward. But again, please don't take that negativity, which should be directed at ME, and project it onto another commenter, who simply enjoyed the video. everybody gets to have their own experience of this piece in the same way everybody should get to have their own experience of the eric andre show. best, michael

This means Eric Andre is one of the smartest people ever. Study these things, as well as films by David Lynch, and you will understand Eric Andre a lot. Also got a lot of tim and eric obviously

The voice over couldn't be more bored about his enthusiasm for Andre.
It's just absurdist and surrealist humor. There's nothing "Deep" about it. He puts people in uncomfortable, surreal and absurd situations and captures the reactions. It's no different than the "caught on camera" bullshit from the 60s where they'd interview a guy but the interviewer would be a naked lady or something weird and socially uncomfortable.
Bugs Bunny is a pretty good observation of Eric Andre's inspiration.

There's still a sense with the show that the absurdness is well thought out, like they deliberately knew from before what surreal situations will get the best reactions and what won't. Even "prank" shows don't go as far with the logic breaking as Eric does. Of course there is also the occasional improvisation sprinkled in some times to keep the viewer even more guessing about what is intentional or not.
That is the reason why the show didn't have much success, because people think he's just doing "random shit" because that's what it looks like.
There's actual order in the "chaos" of the show.
He's an artist at heart, and a very good one at that. People keep forgetting this and bash on his art.
