I mean tbf a lot of characters do end up pretty op upon release and need to get nerfed. There is just no way to test every aspect of it beforehand and so people will often find shit they can abuse.
But I guess there is also the fact that when a new character is released people are not yet adapted and don't know how to play against it.

Alter Q probably is one that doesn't need to use it when casted, it's a skill just to add another consideration to overload opponents brain space, in terms of that aspect it's similar to Mirage clone

you can use that portal while downed...
The depth on her portal is like 20m. You can move a good distance, and her ult is GREAT. Not saying she'll be good in comp, but just forcing your opponents to have to watch the portal even if you don't take it is a pretty big thing.
Came back for the first time since season 12 and the amount of rampant cheating in this game is insane. No wonder people are leaving this game in droves.

I was able to armor swap once but I think I was super low on shields

Unless you were walking into the death box while your passive was active, you can't grab shields
And I only say that because the passive transitions into just looking into the death box normally

Alter = wraith chaser

I think Alter is great and also viable for comp because she brings more to the team than Wraith, and she is still played in comp... I know you can use Wraith for getting passed open areas which you can't do with Alter, but most of the time it gets horribly wrong with Wraith and you just have to stick to buildings or rocks with Alter to use her for traveling and you can even change height with her, like an indoor Horizon. And she can do that every 20 seconds (which I think will get nerfed, because it seems that cooldown is too low). I agree that the portal often doesn't end where you expect it and I also wonder does it work to get into the vault or other places you are not meant to reach.
Then she also has the ult as a backup, so the team can fall back if it is overextending, like the wraith portal but usable from every spot with the downside that you can't do anything while using it, not even hold up your shield when you are knocked.
And her passive can also be helpful if you run out of resources in endgame, especially in comp.
Alter's Q can also be useful sometimes to draw enemies out of their covers, if they stick to it.

Overall I think it is one of the most fun characters to play and am really surprised how Respawn still manages to bring new noteworthy and fun legends to the game

Alter is balanced imo, haven’t had any problems with her. Anyone that complains just sucks imo, hell we’ve played Call of duty so much last stand really ain’t a problem lol.

She’s not competitive viable but in pubs and ranked she’s good if you know how to use her. Many apex players don’t want to put in the time to learn her but of course that’s apex players.
