Taran Killam (SNL, Killing Gunther) joins us this week to share his opinion on attention and rejection as an actor with a unique perspective of having been cast in two iconic sketch shows: Mad TV and SNL. Love the honesty in this episode
Taran shares some pretty uncomfortable moments with heroes like Jack Black and Dave Grohl, while also being open about how he rekindled his relationship with his now wife, Cobie Smulders. We also talk about his audition for Pete in Smallville, who made him crack the most on both Mad TV and SNL, and what it was like to work with Arnold Schwarzenegger on his self directed film.

Taran Killam and Vanessa Bayer were two cast members I totally under-appreciated while they were on, in the sense that I really had no idea how talented they actually are. Rarely did I see either of them crack, and now I know that Taran can SING.
There are many others, of course, through the years.

Taran is a good guy. My wife’s family was in town and we’re showing them around the city, needless to say my wife wasn’t having the best time.. for whatever reason. However, we’re all on the subway and Taran comes in and sits down. I don’t go over because that’s not my style, but I mention it to her and she can’t help herself. She sits down next to him and sweetly asks if he’s Taran from SNL (her whole family watch the show weekly and she’s a big fan) and he smiled and was very nice to her. Made her day and I was always thankful for that. If you see this post Taran, thank you again!

So many people, from Conan to Fey, talk about how emotionally exhausting SNL was but in the same breath say how great it was. It’s like they inch so closely to admitting what a chaotic borderline abusive environment it is but never cross the threshold.

I hate to say it, but that's kind of showbusiness in general. There's absolutely plenty of room for abuse, misconduct and especially ego, and you have to know your limits and cooperate with other people... but your goal is ultimately to get a team of individuals to create one, concrete artistic vision. That's kind of nuts, when you think about it.
Obviously, it's not something everyone can do.
