F••k no. Nirvana contributed towards Metallica getting grunge fans kinda like how Motorhead was a band that punk rockers and metalheads could both enjoy.
There's not a trace of Metallica in Nirvana's music and Metallica wasn't famous until Enter Sandman. Nirvana becoming famous had absolutely nothing to do with Metallica. Nirvana helped Metallica AND Megadeth stand apart from the garbage metal of the 80's and had some influence on why the early 90's Metallica and Megadeth music didn't fall to the wayside like Poison, Motley Crue, Winger, etc. did. Nirvana killed off hair metal while Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, etc. continued to thrive.

Yeah, you could tell that they genuinely didn't like Nirvana. I don't count their interviews because they're putting their PR masks on.
Maybe they were butthurt over the fact that Nirvana refused to go on tour with them due to Guns N Roses during the early 90's. Maybe they were jealous of Nirvana.
Lars was outspoken about his contempt towards Kurt due to Kurt saying that he hated being famous once he was subjected to everything that came with it.
Then in the mid 90's you have Lars wearing guyliner and trying to appear edgy which pretty much says it all. And a dude who's mullet became more and more redneck to the point that he looked like a country band roadie talking s••t about Kurt suddenly cutting the mullet off to promote a new album.
Then several years later they do the same thing again by trying to imitate Korn.
I don't really care that James jammed on CAYA or that they played the intro to SLTS in 2003. It just goes to show how shameless they are when it comes to trying to get people to listen.
I love Metallica and Megadeth's music from the 80's but James, Dave, and Lars seem like incredibly petty, egotistical, narcissistic douchebags to be around overall. The whole thing with James, Jason, and Echobrain didn't have to happen. And there's no way that Dave getting fired from Metallica was solely because of his substance abuse issues. Dave was more popular and outspoken than James in Metallica too. They said the same stuff about Mustaine like when they would trash Nirvana and Alice in Chains.

I definitely think Metallica helped bust the MTV bubble that was keeping edgy rock out. Amazing bands, historic bands were almost glossed over by MTV. Two titans, of the music industry, Metallica and the Grateful Dead are primary examples of bands MTV could have lived without but eventually they bith had a video and for many people, this was a first glimpse into anything beyond, the typical Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Madonna, U2, and Prince formula that MTV had partly relied on. There were some other ground breaking music videos but the under current of alternative music wouldn't be noticed by MTV until after, Metallica, One broke through with a disturbing video and amazing performance scene by the band. We're all fans, were all humans. Competition is so 30th century...

I feel that Metallica had no right whatsoever making fun of Kurt. Especially with that what color was Kurt's eyes joke. In my opinion that would be the equivalent of someone asking "Did you like Cliff Burton?" And then someone replying "Yeah i did! But I always found him a little flat." And I'm not making fun of Cliff at all! He's literally one of my favorite bass players of all time! I'm just using what I said as an example because look how they acted about Cliffs death. Hell, they gave Jason so much sh*t and Jason literally loved Cliff and Metallica! So just imagine how they'd feel if Nirvana made that Cliff joke.

That “What color is Kurt’s eyes” joke was in horrible taste! Like how would they feel if someone said “What does Cliff sound like on bass?” and then they said “He’s good, but he’s a little flat!”

Metallica is exactly what Kurt hated about men in general. Boastful. Arrogant. Machismo attitudes. Shallow. Whereas Kurt was deeply emotional and in touch with the world in a realistic way.

I think they meant to say was opinion has it, that Lars Ulrich is sometimes known as a drummer, albeit straight forward and highly filtered through Pro-Tools cut and paste and drum triggering, otherwise known as skin filled meat and not much else.

James Hetfield made fun of Layne Staley because AIC supposed to tour with them, and they not because of Laynes addiction. Hetfield is a big fan of AIC and friends with Jerry. But Laynes addiction was threatned to destroy the band, one of the best bands in the 90s. Thats the reason of James behaviour and mocking Layne, which wasnt nice.

AiC and Metallica were friends. You can see "friends dont let friends get hair cuts" written on an instrument on AiC unplugged. It was directed at Metallica for thier Load image. Load in itself was hugely inspired by AiC. The jokes on Nirvana were in bad taste.

  • @dantefernandodantezambrano7910

When Metallica released their Load & Reload albums in the mid 1990's most of their fans felt absolutely disappointed because of such rock alternative sound Metallica compiled from different rock alternative bands. At least, the Metallica fans in my homeland couldn't believe that it was the same Metallica playing such themes. Even though Load & Reload albums were commercially successful; Metallica fans felt betrayed due to the fact that Metallica was selling itself to the alternative rock which was the most trending rock sound at the time.
The point of this is that even though the jokes on NIrvana members were quite offensive; Metallica members ended up releasing 2 albums which were completely opposite to their Trash Metal music.

I think it’s inaccurate to say, based on a few public comments, that Kurt didn’t like Metallica early in his career and that his feelings evolved. Kurt probably always had mixed feelings about them. Nirvana’s sound was clearly influenced by metal and I am not surprised that he liked Whiplash. But he was also vehemently opposed to the sexism and machismo that accompanied metal music and wanted to distance himself from that. To complicate it further, he would often just trash things because he was in a particular mood or wanted to impress his punk rock friends. So he could easily have very different opinions depending on the context and day and I think it’s extremely reductionistic to talk as if he could only either like or dislike Metallica.

Cobain was much more of a music snob than the guys in Metallica in fact I first heard of Nirvana from Metallica, they have been instrumental in bringing lots of emerging music to wider attention , I first heard of Ghost through them too. Curt seemed to have this kind of "purist" attitude /persona that he tried to maintain at least publicly you can hear it when he makes the crack about Metallica wearing Misfits shirts as "giving permission" for metal heads to like them as if there is some lame un authentic "poser" intent involved instead of it just being support for cool music not a lot of people in their crowd may have been aware of yet. Cobain was kind of immature in that way.
