2:14 The outtake from that scene was great, Dorn said "I did not play with boys!" by accident. xD
I like the irritated tone of Picard's "oh good lord..." when he finds out no one else was into ships in bottles.
2:14 in "Peak Performance" from season 2 we see that Worf does, in fact, build model ships, so I always liked that line.
So the computer needs to make 'thousands' of adjustments to get through yet Picard can do it with just 5 course adjustments? Also why not let Data just take control. And destroying the ship was not necessary I think, just launch a warning beacon and try to retrieve your museum piece later. And finally, if that ship has been there for a thousand years, why are there no other trapped ships like we see in The Void (VOY). K I'll shut up now
I agree with everything. --Robert
Yup agree, was literally thinking 'had DATA do it!' Maybe having had a whole 'we need the computer to get out, but we do not have enough power left if you do!'
And then everyone turns slowly and looks at Data who goes '.... what? is there something on my face?' or some such.
2:16
"I never played with bo-............."
Was expecting you to edit that outtake in there sneakily or something :P
I was too, lol
I love this episode, but I agree that just exploring a derelict ship would have been interesting.
Same here. I wish there was more of that in the episode.
I've always liked this episode but if you think about it there's a lot wrong about it. Geordie seems to forget that he has an engineering team of real people he could have worked with. During this crisis we never see him speak with any of them. What are they doing during all of this? I guess we can assume that Geordie gives orders to them at some point. But the episode strongly implies he's the only person on the Enterprise trying to find a solution. It's also very hard to believe Picard would have ordered the destruction of the ship at the end. They could have deployed warning beacons and Starfleet could probably have figured out a way later to retrieve what was a historical artifact.
Good points.
Harpoon the ship. Tug it out. Lol.
This episode is pretty alright I’d say but once you watch Galaxy’s Child (s4ep16) you can’t see it the same way again so I never go back to this one. Side note: When you pulled up the bit between Picard Data and Worf I thought you were going to play the blooper where Worf responds “I never played with boys.”
I liked this one. Ignoring the obvious issues/concessions made for this being a cheap TV show, it has some good themes that run throughout.
The whole thing is about control and trying to use technology to control everything. The solution to the puzzle was to let go of that safety blanket technology and trust your instincts.
Ultimately it's the solution to the enterprise' issue and Geordie's woeful attempts at romance. A good link of the A and B plots there through a connected theme that wasnt too on the nose.
Geordi did have a themed episode in Season's Ones Arsnel of Freedom' having to take command of the enterprise as a junior officer.
He did have the spotlight on him a bit, but that felt like more of a subplot.
Reverse Angle I can’t disagree, but it was the closest thing to a solid Geordi episode before this one. Maybe the Sherlock Holmes episode was one where Geordi was part of Data’s experience. All I’m saying, Geordi got some good subplots in the first season and Arnsel (sic) was a great look at a piece of Geordi we never really got again after he became the chief engineer.
True.
I hate watching awkward Geordi but this ep has my fave set of lines between Data, Worf, & Picard about the playing with ships in a bottle. “I did not play with toys!” “I was never a boy”😄 Plus, watching Picard take over the navigation in such a high stakes situation is uber exciting🤩. I also trust Patrick Stewart. I enjoyed watching the “slingshot” scene even if it didn’t make sense visually. A-/B+
Ah I see the episode title "Booby Trap" had a double meaning.
That's one way to look at it.
First time I saw this I thought Geordi was going to the holodeck to do the 24th century version of 3D printing a warp engine, too. Rarely using the holodeck for practical purposes was a disappointment of the series. The best use was in "Schisms", the abducted by aliens episode, where the insomniac crew members use their vague recollections to collectively piece together the alien instruments.
I just love how he saved everyone’s life, and still can’t get some action, the ultimate reject.
I think during the quick cut "booby trap" montage at the end, 9:36, the final cut should have been Data saying "booby trap."
Except not Star Trek Data, but Goonies Data. Lol. I was all but waiting for it... would have been so perfect. 😂
Watching it now.
Hell, watched it back in the day too.
I feel like I've warped through time.
Sorry got sidetracked 🤣
ETA: You can tell it's a Geordicentric episode from the first opening scene.
Not my favorite, but way better than a Worf and Son episode 🤣🤣
Also, great video!!
Although Michael Wagner wrote this episode, this was also the first ep where he wasn't co-executive producer. Michael Wagner was apparently Maurice Hurley's preferred successor but he didn't last-so Michael Pillar and Ira Steven Behr This was also the first ep of Star Trek directed by a woman, Gabrielle Beaumont (and her first of 7 credits on TNG.)
Ron Jones scored this ep-and it was another instance of his feud with Rick Berman.
Look at the modern equivalent 'relationship' with REPLIKA...
The clash between the 23rd century setting and RIker's very 1980's Luddite attitude towards computers is hilarious, as is most of the crew proceeding to shit on computers in front of Data.
Another very good one. But you missed the theme 'turning off'. Jordie is trying too hard and using tech to impress the girl and fails. But then learns to 'turn off and disconnect from tech' and that is how they save the day when they shut down all of the systems in the enterprise.
Interesting note at the end about having a computer generated mentor to help in artistic pursuits. I feel like that's exactly where we're headed with things like ChatGPT.
Personally, the ending where they blow the ship'nstuff never sat right with me. It was still an archeological site, dangerous or not, and steps could have been taken to preserve it, warn off intruders, and eventually explore it safely.
Geordi's such a creep in this episode.
so begins the
GEORDI
is a creeper storylines
6:10 😂😂
If the safety features on the holodeck are disabled, yes the computer would attempt to kill Jordi to honor his wording 😂😂😂
Worf: I did not play with toys.
Me: Ok...but did you build ships in bottles like Picard asked? psh lol
2:15 Then he goes and stands in the wrong spot on the transporter xD
There's a follow up episode in the next season, that makes Geordi out to be kind of a weirdo. Brahms arrives on board and she finds his holodeck program. He has a crush on Brahms, but doesn't think that she's married.
Good review. More forgiving than others.
What's up with the extras at 1:26 wearing the older uniforms with the collar piping?
That was absolutely thrilling!
Ruler keeps eating!!!
2:10 Worf does not play with boys.
when you caress these engines you're caressing me when you soap these engines you're soaping me when you rub vigorously against these engines you're rubbing vigorously against me when you squirt in these engines....
lmao
I did not play with boys. I was never a toy.
Found one i didn't see before. Watched, liked shared and pleasured myself
Booby trap has double meaning
whats your intro music from? its catchy
Nick made it himself for the channel.
They should NOT have destroyed that ship. D+ just for that
It did seem seem a bit illogical to destroy it instead of alerting Starfleet to investigate further.
"We gotta wrap this episode up, make it exciting! What if he just blows it up or something, yeah do that. I gotta go now, my massage with Tanya is in 10 minutes, check the gate..."
The best moment for me was when Picard DRIFTED the Enterprise
This was so funny! 🤣🤣🤣
Wonderful
Anyone see the issue with them being immobilized. Simple solution right?
To be fair the compter did accidentally create moritry to become self aware in elementary my dear data.
Oh nvm I saw you mentioned that.
Don't bother sending a drone
Blowing up the archeological find of an intact ancient starship was stupid. Just put out a warning warning buoys. A science ship can come back later and take the booby trap apart so the ship can be preserved in a museum somewhere. Seemed wasteful and stupid excuse to include and explosion in the show.
Dr Brahms is hot.
This one was great
ho man amnf cool
That was absolutely thrilling!
