Ok Computer is one of the greatest albums ever written. It captured pre-millenial tension in an automated world. This album is almost 25 years old and it would be ahead of it's time if it was released today.

This is not exclusive to Radiohead, you goofball. Talk to an enthusiastic fan of any rapper or pop singer and they will be just as insufferable, if not more. Luckily that super popular/“non-experimental” band is rarely played on the radio (I wonder why) so you shouldn’t be in much danger of getting triggered by one of their songs.
I love that you talk about feeling like you're in a crowded restaurant surrounded by people and chaos. That's exactly the reference point that Thom Yorke was going for when he wrote this. He was in a bar in Hollywood, looking around at the soulless, terrifying consumer culture he was suddenly immersed in. Someone spills a drink on a wealthy woman's bag, and she loses it, staring daggers at everyone. It's just awesome that music can communicate these images simply through melodies and rhythms. Keep up the great fiddlesticking work.
I was going to write almost the same thing - she zeroed in on exactly the impulse behind the song just based on the music and vague lyrics. Amazing that so much can be communicated through music alone.
Difficult as it may be to believe now, this came close to topping the UK singles chart in 1997. I think I first heard it at work (I injured my back so it stuck in my mind!) and being genuinely taken aback. Radiohead were already a major band in Britain and had been for a few years, but this really took them up a notch. They began to draw comparisons with the likes of Pink Floyd and since 'OK Computer' came out, every subsequent release has been treated like it's the new work by Stravinsky.
I'm glad you liked this song. I always get a little worried when someone says their only exposure to Radiohead is "Creep." That may their biggest hit commercially, but it doesn't really give you an accurate idea of what you're getting yourself into with them.
I love Radiohead as much as I love Pink Floyd and the Beatles, and for the same reasons. They are all so incredibly talented and sonically inventive bands. And Thom Yorke's lyrics are so relatable and gotten me through some tough times in my life. I love that you loved the song!
You should listen to OK Computer the whole album through... then take a break... listen to it again in private if you'd like... then try their next one Kid A. Radiohead is truly a revolutionary band.

I firmly believe that the majority just want to hear their own voice when their talk time is longer than the length of the song. 'The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy'. But, in contrast to alt-rock bands today, who seem to routinely talk about how shit modern capitalist life is, Radiohead seemed to be swimming against the tide of tub-thumping, flag-waving British guitar rock of the day. Singer Thom Yorke was even singled out as part of the 'New Vulnerability'.

The album is about trying to keep your humanity in the face of an onslaught of technology. I heard someone say it was about not letting the machines win. Spoiler alert the machines won.

All reactions I see for Radiohead are of "Creep" and I'm not really big on that (not that it's a bad song) and I think it steers people away from trying another song from them which is unfortunate since they're one of the greatest bands of all time.

Yup, Thom wrote the song after a disturbing experience at a bar. 😂 After the commercial success of Creep Radiohead started experimenting with making their material less accessible. They have some really phenomenal songs though! If you like this song you will probably like some of their other stuff.

Ok, this is new to me too. I knew about, ' l'm a Creep'. I had heard they were good. This was Fenominal! You were focused on the vocals. I was focused on the whole composition. The chord changes, the modulations, the melody, and yes the delivery and angst of the vocals. I have to listen to it again right now!
Their entire discography is incredible they compose music as good or better than any band ever I envy you I would really suggest either of the basement sessions you get to see them pull this shit off live but the sound quality is top-notch as well try the In Rainbows one first.
Jayy, we don't know each other but you are such an important person to me because of your genuine reactions and I want to share this song's meaning to me with you- I was in college when 9/11 happened. Many of my friends were in school in New York and I could not get in touch with any of them that day. I went about my business, going to my classes, not fully understanding what was happening. I went to work that night after school and was watching the black and white TV in the restaurant break room, seeing replays of the planes hitting the towers over and over and over again. When I was driving home after work that night this CD was playing in my car. The gas stations had lines around the block. No one knew what was going to happen around the world and I didn't know if my friends were even safe in NYC. And Paranoid Android started playing in my car. "Rain down from a great hight. That's it sir, you're leaving, the crackle of pigskin, the dust and the screaming, the yuppies networking, the panic, the vomit, God loves his children". And I broke down and sobbed on my steering wheel. That was when it all hit me. Thank you for what you do. You are magic.
A bit like when Kennedy got shot (sorry for dark ref) I remember where and when I heard this for the first time (on the jukebox in a pub after my first job after Uni). I had not heard of Radiohead at the time but this song I just loved immediately and had never heard anything similar. Huge fan ever since, hope you become one too :)

It was inspired by a trip to a bar in LA when Radiohead first visited the US. "Gucci little piggy, yuppies networking, the panic, the vomit" Obviously not a great experience. Radiohead is one of the truly great bands ever. I highly recommend listening to them in order. You started off right with Creep, but you skipped ahead a little. Try some of the great songs from "The Bends" their second album: "Fake Plastic Trees", High and Dry", "Just", "My Iron Lung", and my favorite "Street Spirit (Fade Out)". Then it will be time for more from OK Computer, the album that Paranoid Android is from. They evolved so much album to album you really should do them in order, but you'll be rewarded for your efforts by getting a much better understanding of them and their genius. And just another little heads up, the album after OK Computer was so different they lost a fair number of their old fans and found a whole bunch of new ones. Their career is quite a ride! Thanks! With Radiohead, the only thing to suggest is to listen to everything. They are and have been for many years the best live band on the planet. You probably couldn't react to it on YT but in your own time watch their 2017 Glastonbury set.

Like if this song was the only song played at their concert I would be satisfied!!! That song is like hearing 5 songs in one. You should watch the the live performance they played in Glastonbury 2003. Radiohead really is one of the most original bands, EVER! Radiohead is the only thing that sounds like Radiohead. Not the best ever, but they deserve respect, nonetheless! The Bends, and this album are both classics, in their own way! They lost me until In Rainbows dropped, but sadly completely lost my attention after that! Was cool to see someone discover this music for the first time. I’d recommend highly, the song Subterranean Homesick Alien off this album. My favorite all time Radiohead tune!!

It's such a pleasure watching your reactions to these songs, this one in particular. Seeing your surprise, the enthusiasm, the highs and lows, it almost feels like I'm rediscovering some of my favourites all over again. A lot of younger folk may never discover the joy of music like this, but you have so much love and appetite for hearing different styles of music from across generations. @@stuartallan9914 BBC Radio 1 DJ’s Mark and Lard used to refer to him as Johnny Greentrees so it just sort of stuck....if you feel like a giggle, find “No Big Sizes” by The Shirehorses - Mark and Lards parody band...(think they called themselves Radioshed for that track). Probably a good idea to not have children in the vicinity for that one though. 🤣🤣🤣

Make sure you go back and listen to their earlier stuff on Pablo Honey and The Bends. Black Star is an all-time fav of mine.

Ok, this is new to me too. I knew about, ' l'm a Creep'. I had heard they were good. This was Fenominal! You were focused on the vocals. I was focused on the whole composition. The chord changes, the modulations, the melody, and yes the delivery and angst of the vocals. I have to listen to it again right now!
Their entire discography is incredible they compose music as good or better than any band ever I envy you I would really suggest either of the basement sessions you get to see them pull this shit off live but the sound quality is top-notch as well try the In Rainbows one first.

Jayy, we don't know each other but you are such an important person to me because of your genuine reactions and I want to share this song's meaning to me with you-
I was in college when 9/11 happened. Many of my friends were in school in New York and I could not get in touch with any of them that day. I went about my business, going to my classes, not fully understanding what was happening. I went to work that night after school and was watching the black and white TV in the restaurant break room, seeing replays of the planes hitting the towers over and over and over again. When I was driving home after work that night this CD was playing in my car. The gas stations had lines around the block. No one knew what was going to happen around the world and I didn't know if my friends were even safe in NYC. And Paranoid Android started playing in my car.

And I broke down and sobbed on my steering wheel. That was when it all hit me.

A bit like when Kennedy got shot (sorry for dark ref) I remember where and when I heard this for the first time (on the jukebox in a pub after my first job after Uni). I had not heard of Radiohead at the time but this song I just loved immediately and had never heard anything similar. Huge fan ever since, hope you become one too :)

Ok Computer,, really changed music. It was so different for it's time. I remember when I first heard it and it was an experience. RH have always been super creative and unique that's why I love them so much. Super talented fellas.

This why I love you. You get it. This song is tremendous beyond all measure. It's just unparalleled in what it does.
It was inspired by a trip to a bar in LA when Radiohead first visited the US. "Gucci little piggy, yuppies networking, the panic, the vomit" Obviously not a great experience. Radiohead is one of the truly great bands ever. I highly recommend listening to them in order. You started off right with Creep, but you skipped ahead a little. Try some of the great songs from "The Bends" their second album: "Fake Plastic Trees", High and Dry", "Just", "My Iron Lung", and my favorite "Street Spirit (Fade Out)". Then it will be time for more from OK Computer, the album that Paranoid Android is from. They evolved so much album to album you really should do them in order, but you'll be rewarded for your efforts by getting a much better understanding of them and their genius. And just another little heads up, the album after OK Computer was so different they lost a fair number of their old fans and found a whole bunch of new ones. Their career is quite a ride! Thanks!

With Radiohead, the only thing to suggest is to listen to everything. They are and have been for many years the best live band on the planet. You probably couldn't react to it on YT but in your own time watch their 2017 Glastonbury set.
This is progressive, definate atonal moments. Great dynamics. Great instrumentation, avant garde solos. I love it.

YESSS! Just like you this was like being on a rollercoaster when I first heard this song. I was 14 years old and I thought WHAT THE HECK IS THIS? I’ve never heard anything like it. Like if this song was the only song played at their concert I would be satisfied!!! That song is like hearing 5 songs in one. You should watch the the live performance they played in Glastonbury 2003. It was funny watching your reaction because I knew what was coming up and I knew you would love it and be amazed, your reaction was awesome! I love this song.

It's a trip. I'm glad you have listened to it before watching the video for it. It is a great video that'll also take you on a trip, but just acoustically it is just beautiful.

Radiohead really is one of the most original bands, EVER! Radiohead is the only thing that sounds like Radiohead. Not the best ever, but they deserve respect, nonetheless! The Bends, and this album are both classics, in their own way! They lost me until In Rainbows dropped, but sadly completely lost my attention after that! Was cool to see someone discover this music for the first time. I’d recommend highly, the song Subterranean Homesick Alien off this album. My favorite all time Radiohead tune!!
I’ll second S.H.A, it’s an incredibly beautiful song, the production (and for the rest of OK Computer) is wonderful, definitely one for the headphones.
