How to Make Reusable Sandwich & Snack Bags

- In this video tutorial I teach you how to make SUPER EASY reusable sandwich and snack bags.
The fabrics used in this tutorial are:

To complete this project all you need is:
- an 18" x 7" piece of fabric of your choice (preferably something washable)
-coordinating thread
-sewing machine
It's a great beginner project or something to make with your kids who may be learning how to sew. They come in very handy and are environmentally friendly! We use these in our house instead of the plastic baggies that just add more plastic to our landfills. These snack bags can be washed, dried and used over and over again. Feel free to change the fabric measurements to make them in any size you want.

I've made several for my daughter and some friends. These are awesome. I personally used used the shinny material for the inside (to easily wipe clean between washings) and a second material w/her choice of material for the outside. Sewed the two together, turned them inside out, then followed your directions to complete. Wish I could attatch pic's. You are wonderful!!! I love your videos..
woa that was fast! Your like " just fold here and here, and sew here and here. Then when you're done, just fold the top over and your pouch is done!" lol i want to make A MILLION!!!!! lol

Wouldn't you want to have the shiny side in so that you could just wipe it clean of any mayo or mustard from sandwiches instead of needing to wash them every time? Or sew two pieces together right sides out?
Hi Vanessa, I want to thank you for taking the time to do these videos. Today I made this snack bag and it was my first successful sewing project. I purchased a machine a couple of weeks back, and it was really satisfying to finally be able to make something with the materials I had purchased.
Your beginner videos are extremely helpful and the best resource I've come across in my attempts to learn how to use my sewing machine.
I save the lining bags from cereal boxes to use as a food safe liner for these great little reusable bags. I just wash them out and pull apart the glued seams of the cereal box liners.

I know this is ages after you left this comment but hopefully someone can help...I'm just learning so i was wondering would you just sew the cereal liner onto the cotton first (like, just around the 4 edges?), then proceed with her steps? Thanks in advance, brilliant idea!
I've made small pillow cases like this, but would have never thought of these sandwich/snack bags! Have been avoiding making these because of other instructions that were way more difficult, but this will be so EASY! So excited! Plan on making several of these this weekend!
My sister-in-law just got a sewing machine for her birthday, and this bag was the first thing she made! I had her get a fat quarter to make measuring easier for her and she knocked that joker out in about 30 minutes (like I said, she just learned how to use the machine)! I used this method to make covers for our flax seed microwave bags - so easy to remove and throw into the washing machine and keeps the bean bags a little cleaner!

Great Idea!!! Like everyone else, I have lots of left over fabrics. I used to be able to buy a sandwich to eat on the way to the doctor's office, but now, I have to make my own. I love this tutorial. I ended up doing a PUL on the outside of a cotton so there is waterproof lining inside in case of squashed grapes or messy stuff. I found that this patter was a little too narrow for my son, so I'm going to widen it. Awesome tut though, thanks a lot!!!

what a great tutorial, so easy to understand. I used this design to make hot water bottle covers using polar fleece, I was even thinking of incorpriating the flap part to make mittens on the ends of the sleaves on baby clothes :)

They are super easy and quick to make. Enjoy it!
Depends on what you are keeping in it. This is only meant to be a temporary source for transporting the food. I wouldn't leave anything in this or any other baggy too long. Stuff might get on it but it's washable so it's all good. You could also wrap it in something before putting it in but I prefer not to waste more paper, foil, etc.

these are great. i use mine to keep my stashes separate. i travel A LOT and need various compartments to stay organized. These bags achieve that in a stylish way. I also travel with my puppy, so i keep her thing in one of these bags too! thanks for a great tip! Am a new subbie and love ur channel.

I made a double layer to add more protection. Gifted them to hold rocks (sliced agate and/or tumbled type of rocks).

Yup.. just like those old school baggies. With the laminated cotton the shiny side will stick to itself if it's on the inside. Maybe if you used PUL it would be fine. But in this case the shiny goes to the outside.

You don't have to if you don't want to. It depends on how you want to clean them out. If you want it to be wipe-able then put PUL if you plan to pop them in the wash and dryer then you can just leave the cotton. But whatever you use on the inside make sure it's food safe.

Fuse some plastic bags...make your own inner side of your bags!! Also use recycled fabric! Just a thought :)

Sounds cool. Depends what's in the sandwich.... but I don't put mayo in my sandwiches so they can usually hold up for at least a few hours... but if put in a cold lunch box or cooler you would be safe too. Have fun!

Putting the laminated fabric inside would make it easier to clean and for myself that is what I'd want if I put food in it.

The laminated fabric will stick to itself if it's on the inside so it may be difficult to get stuff in and out of it. The laminated fabric is sealed so it wouldn't dry out unless left out for a long period of time. But this idea is only for the temporary transporting of sandwiches and snacks... like kids lunches or work lunches. I wouldn't store anything in these or any other baggies for too long.

I am making some this weekend. I am using beeswax wrap fabric that I made.
I love the sandwich bag! I wrap my children's sandwiches in wax paper because I do not like to waste and put more plastic using baggies. I believe I would like to make my baggies with the plastic side inside, pb and j can get messy. Sounds like it would be easy to clean up.

Wonderful idea, and so easy! Do you have a video on making cotton menstrual pads? I am getting into that, too. Thanks for all your videos; I really enjoy them. I learned how to make an envelope pillow from your videos and now I have made lots of them. It is so nice to be able to take off the cover and wash it when needed, or change it to a different cover.
I like them. I'd add a front pocket to add an ice pack or a frozen juice bottle. That way I could be sure that my sandwich could be safe :).

I have a ?? about the laminated cotton. Can laminated cotton go in the washer? I like the idea of laminated cotton because it's perfect for a sandwich. Plain cotton will let in too much air and make the sandwich stale. If the laminated cotton can be thrown in the washing machine... these would be miraculous! LOL!

I think your reusable bags are a neat idea...I wonder tho, is this material food grade safe? I worry about the plastic leaching into the food. Is the fabric bpa free?
