The entire songs in this Score 2006 Radio City Music Hall concert DVD is amazingly produced.
They could play blues pop & jazzy kind of thing like this, but mainly they play progressive rock & metal musics.
For another starters, I suggest you this czcams.com/video/4KcTYTZRqtQ/video.html from the same concert before you going to their rock / metal songs.
      Enjoy the ride!

This song is part of a concept album involving reincarnation. While it's a wonderful song, it's not quite representative of the sound they're known for. Every member of the band is a world class musician and they certainly do make sure to remind us of that quite often in their music. They have an extremely technical side, a heavy side, a melodic side, and a poppy side. They're like the product of an orgy between Rush, Yes, Pink Floyd, and Metallica with U2 watching from the sidelines. I really do feel like they have something for everybody.

    • @UnderARock
      @UnderARock  Před 2 lety

Well I won't ever be able to get that orgy image out of my head. I can't wait to explore more Dream Theater to see where it takes me. Thanks for the comment 🤘🏻

You may not, at this moment, realize what you have just stepped into. 😉🤣
Suggestions for more Dream Theater -
    1) All of it
    2) Their entire library
    3) Seriously…
(though it’s 15 studio album’s worth, so I hope you have a week or two. 😜)
I would start with ‘Pull Me Under’. It’s really where their story begins (thought there is an earlier album, this song launched DT as we know them today) and, it remains one of their very best songs.
    My personal favorites are:
    Learning to Live
    Breaking All Illusions
    Change of Season
    Count of Tuscany
    Octavarium (song)
    Our New World
    Wither
    Best of Times
    Trial of Tears
    As I Am
    Endless Sacrifice
    Under a Glass Moon
    Invisible Monster
A View From The Top Of The World
“Metropolis Pt 2 - Scenes from a Memory” and “The Astonishing” albums are concept albums and should be listened to (and reacted to) in their entirety. ‘Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence” is close to a concept album… it is all about mental illnesses (bringing much needed awareness to remove stigmas). “Octavarium” (album) is brilliantly constructed with lots of “Easter eggs” to discover.
All of their songs have purpose and meaning that can take you on journeys of discovery.
Some of their songs are personal, including ‘Take Away My Pain’ & ‘Best of Times’ - both about band member’s father’s battling cancer. They will make you cry. ‘Under a Glass Moon’ & ‘Endless Sacrifice” are songs to Petrucci’s wife. ‘As I Am’ is a brilliant “middle finger” to the mainstream music industry.
‘Sacrificed Sons’ is about 9/11. Brilliant!
Finally, there are 5 songs across 5 albums that contain AA’s 12 Step program. A lot to discover and unpack there.
    Enjoy!

This is the best advice you can give, all 3 pieces!! They are the best, most technically advanced people at every level of the band, but they thing I love more than anything is the songs all have meanings, or are stories. Scenes from a memory is the greatest album ever, and spirit carries on is amazing on its own, but listen to the album in whole and the lyrics, and the song will be a million times better. The favorite songs he's suggested are all great, I've especially listened to Count of Tuscany a lot lately, reminds me of a prog version of Hotel California. One other song I would Highly recommend is "Take the Time" my personal favorite of thiers

  • @cunjoz
    @cunjoz Před 2 lety +4

Thank you for reacting to this song. I bet you've received info on what this song is a part of and what you should do next from all the DT fans. We are like that :)
Now, I just want to say that I love James' voice. I might be one of the few of the fans that actually do, but hey.
I started out not liking it very much since I came in from death metal, but I've gotten used to it and now I love it.
The thing that I love most about his way of singing is that he just sings. Yes, he's got technique as every good singer does, but he doesn't contort his voice. He doesn't do the power metal thing, he doesn't do the symphonic metal thing or any other thing. He just sings with his natural voice and I think that's very unique in metal with clean vocals.

  • @willpreisler
    @willpreisler Před 2 lety +3

So glad you reacted to this! Dream Theater is my favorite band, like many who commented.
Some suggestions for getting a feel for them:
    As I Am
    The Glass Prison
    This Dying Soul
Instrumedley (cool sampling of great song sections, kinda like an overture)
    Metropolis Part 1
    Under a Glass Moon
    Pull Me Under
Scenes From a Memory (concept album, so worth listening to the whole thing, and every song is good or great)
If you like them you’ll probably want to dive into the longer songs like:
    A Change of Seasons
    Octavarium
    Count of Tuscany
    Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
You’ll find that a lot of their songs have a message or meaning. If you like them, you’ll go down an awesome rabbit hole of musical happiness. :) if not, thanks for checking them out, one of the best bands in our lifetime, IMHO

@@UnderARock oh it surely is a very good song, just very very simple compared to their other works.
While In the Presence of Enemies is a masterpiece, I still wouldn't go there if I were you. It's a 26 minute song and maybe you should try something else first like Blind Faith or Metropolis part 1: the Miracle and the Sleeper, or On the Backs of Angels

I know someone has already said it probably but their album Metropolis part 2 is a MUST if you wanna dig deeper into their stuff. It's the album this song is from and the album's story is really well done (it's a concept album). If you keep going with the Dream Theater journey I can guarantee you won't be disappointed. Now, I will say from now on I'd recommend doing studio recordings. The lead singer isnt really known for singing great live, especially more recently. He had a vocal chord injury in the 90s and still hasn't fully recovered so I think studio versions are the way to go if you want to get the full DT experience. But great reaction 🤘

That's some good old fashioned Dream Theater there.
This song, gorgeous as it is, is out of context from an album that is basically a book. It's a story, and this song like chapter 8 or something.

As others have said. It's a nice song but it's not very representative of the band nor does it show off their immense talents very well. I like the song and there is nothing wrong with it. But it's not a song I would have picked to get a true feeling for the band for someone who has never heard them before.
As I said below. To me this is not actually a "song." It's more a bridge piece for what comes before and after. It's always amazing to me when a reactor picks a song for a group they never heard before and they almost every time manage to pick something that is not typical by the band they are reacting to. It's amazing how many times this happens. I bet next you will pick one of their few instrumentals. LOL. I mean that happens all the time with DT. Then the reactor wonders is they even have a singer.

It's just a breather between their complex and crazy showmanship songs. It's a shame this was your first impression of them, it's so underwhelming. Still a beautiful piece, but...
