  • Also watch Asimo dance at minute 9:00!!!
Asimo packed the Honda area for every single demo at the USA Science and Engineering Festival 2018.
This is the new and improved robot and it certainly showed!
It danced, climbed the stairs and even ran across the stage.
The Honda Robotics team did an amazing job building it but also presenting it to the spectators.
Cannot get enough of the show and are happy to share this clip with you! Enjoy Asimo at his best!

Growing up in the 90s, I was a huge fan of Honda's robots, and I remember their robots looking more and more different and more advanced with each new incarnation over the span of half a decade, then came Asimo in 2000. I was psyched. I wondered where it'd go next. Then came Gen 2 Asimo in 2005, but since then, besides tweaks, adjustments and very subtle upgrades, you have to admit that there doesn't seem to have been any major groundbreaking developments since then. It's like Honda's reached the end of the road with Asimo.
    *EDIT*
I also just learned at the last minute that Honda retired Asimo just a few months after this demonstration, and may be focusing on a whole new model. I really wonder where they'll go with it next.

Asimo doesn't have rolling hips so it can't swing it's body over it's supporting legs like a human. therefore it has to have a short gait like a chimpanzee. Hence walking around looking like it just crapped itself.

What progress? It is still walking up stairs and kicking a ball, like it did decades ago. If there's any progress it's so incremental that it's negligible. After 20 years and decades more working on it, there's still no commercial version for sale. Couldn't be used for the Fukushima power plant, useless during covid, when is Asimo ever gonna be used for anything aside from tech demos like a dancing monkey? At least a lot has been learned from Asimo, but he will be a stepping stone displayed at a museum like the many failed plane designs that came before the Wright Brothers. Plus Honda abandoned this project so it didn't seem like they saw much progress either.

I met Asimo many years ago when I was a kid at one of these events. At the time, he was considered one of the most advanced robots. During the demonstration, he had a conversation and (amongst other things) managed to serve drinks. It was very impressive. I thought he was the most lovely little robot and wanted to be his friend. Asimo is so cute and endearing, i’m so happy they’ve still kept him going and are continually making improvements. We love you Asimo ❤️🤖

An absolutely astounding piece of machinery. Just the computational advances alone required to allow it to operate so quickly and precisely are amazing. One has to wonder how many ergometers this thing uses to determine its' orientation. Visual analysis, hearing, interpretation of language.... etc.. I wonder as to its' battery life between charges. Can it plug itself into a power source when in need of recharge? One thing I don't find really impressive is the over expression with the arms as this takes up tremendous amounts of computational power and further shortens battery life. Sign language is fine and dandy but I'd prefer to see that processing be put to better use in the way of task performance. All in all, excellent engineering.

I think the Asimo project established a humaniod robot legend of Japanese robots since 1986. The 2018 asimo looks very mature since robot P1, P2 and P3, even the 2000 Asimo. It shows the optimized movment and respond time. I think it is very impressive. Boston dynamics robots are foundamentally a set of different robots, which shows a lot of break through. However they are newer generation, Boston Dynamics robots should not be mixed up with Honda Asimo. Asimo already reach its goal. We should appriciate the hard work of pioneers put in to this project which ends up with such a friendly human like robot.

The problem with this comments section is we are all so used to cgi in films making the currently impossible seem so "real" that when the real walks on to the stage we are all like "meh"
Just consider what Asimo and other projects like it represent in terms of Human ingenuity and imagination. This is no fascist society "Data" based on wonder tech and Geordie's visor. This is real and it is amazing no matter that it is not as dramatic as some CGI giant zombie.

Many are saying this but ignore the type of robot Asimo is and the fact that it was in many ways the basis for a lot of the research and inspiration that went into all biped robots that followed on his footsteps. We love Boston Dynamics and have visited their facility.
Atlas and Spot are undoubtedly stronger, better machines but Asimo was the first in a time when building it was simply impossible for others.

ASIMO could play nurse to Coronavirus infected patients and deliver medicines to them like the antiviral Tamiflu. Or antibiotics like Floriquins like Cipro which is really strong stuff. As well as clean up Fukushima's nuclear power plant. ASIMO could also help Japan with it's depopulation problem. Think about it Honda.

Flaw with using them for radiation. You can't shield one from the gamma rays and still have it move nicely. Gamma radiation, from a blown core, will fuck the electronics on the molecular level. Exactly like Chernobyl. Robot might work, but will be irreparably damaged in short order. Not to mention its now radioactive.
Chill with your doctors suggestions. You're very likely not a doctor. Or anyone with real medical knowledge.
