- 1945 आते आते एक आम जापानी की ज़िंदगी बहुत मुश्किल हो चुकी थी दुकानों में अंडे, दूध, चाय और कॉफ़ी पूरी तरह से ग़ायब हो चुके थे. स्कूलों के मैदानों और घरों के बगीचों में सब्ज़ियाँ उगाई जा रही थीं. पेट्रोल भी आम लोगों की पहुंच से बाहर हो चुका था. सड़कों पर एक भी निजी कार नहीं दौड़ रही थीं. हिरोशिमा की सड़कों पर हर तरफ़ साइकिलें, पैदल चलते लोग और सैनिक वाहन दिखाई देते थे. 6 अगस्त, 1945 को सुबह 7 बजे जापानी रडारों ने दक्षिण की ओर से आते अमरीकी विमानों को देख लिया. चेतावनी के सायरन बज उठे और पूरे जापान में रेडियो कार्यक्रम रोक दिए गए. जापान में तब तक पेट्रोल की इतनी कमी हो चुकी थी कि उन विमानों को रोकने के लिए कोई जापानी विमान नहीं भेजा गया. आठ बजते बजते चेतावनी उठा ली गई और रेडियो कार्यक्रम फिर से शुरू हो गए. 8 बज कर 9 मिनट पर अमरीकी वायु सेना के कर्नल पॉल टिबेट्स ने अपने बी- 29 विमान 'एनोला गे' के इंटरकॉम पर घोषणा की, 'अपने गॉगल्स लगा लीजिए और उन्हें अपने माथे पर रखिए. रेहान फ़ज़ल की प्रस्तुति.
