I know hypixel most likely won't do this, but they should add a part of the forum where official mods that they allow for sb. Like they make a list of mods that are safe to use with a link to the official page. But still having the USE AT UR OWN RISK (but these r safe mods)
Completely agree, but we are talking about hypixel here :/
@@elliotced true i mean when a new update comes out it takes like a month until the official wiki gets updated while the fandom 1 takes like a week

I had a cousin at one point that used one of these mods, they were 10 or 11 at the time and I don’t actually think that he was involved with a pyramid scheme, I think he solely took skyblock coins (probably like 10 or 20b) but he didn’t give any of the money to others just got his hands on the file and thought he could get good at his favorite game. Weird how 10 year olds can get their hands on RATS these days.

The biggest problem with Hypixel's attempted solution is that the Security Sloth NPC, for as important as it can be, can also be easily ignored. I think they can do a similar job to what Runescape did, a long time ago, in the "Stronghold of Security" dungeon. Make it so the NPC is the first thing the players talk to as they leave their private island, along with a short tutorial on account security and some questions about it. At the end of the guide, players could be rewarded with a special talisman, or something along those lines. It would make it so EVERYONE sees the information, but it isn't a waste of time.
EDIT:I mentioned the Stronghold of Security to say that there should be an incentive to seeing trivia about account security, even if it's not going to be the same thing(The admins would not code a whole dungeon just with the intent of account security, probably)
most people would propably just click through it to get whatever reward there is without even looking/listening to the information

Almost fell victim to this.
I was in a random dungeon hub and some rich duded partied me and started talking to me. Seemed like a nice guy. His profile looked somewhat suspicious (skills not correlating to his multiple black wither sets and other billion coin items), but he told me his friend gave it to him.
I joined a discord call with him and his friend, and he nonchalantly started talking about auction flipper mods. He even allowed me to use his private one!
Yes this was obvious retrospectively, but he was a Minecraft master of deception.
I wasn't using forge at the time and hadn't had it downloaded so when he persistently tried to teach me how to, I finally became suspicious. I moved the mod into the folder, made an excuse and left the call, deleting the file before startup.
Nearly lost 4b networth and a thousand hours of playtime, but he did teach me how to install forge so I guess that was a bonus.
Don't do stupid stuff kids.

You ever feel paranoid that if you had a RAT this whole times and it's used 5 years later or something
3:15 i cannot resonate more with this part as even with an extremely tight knit group of friends we ALWAYS point each other to the official websites or discords simply because it is just good practice and spreads awareness for people who arent so experienced, i would urge other people to do the same
the scariest part about these scams is thinking you might forget about them and then fall victim to one
Been here, done that.
Malware and RATs were everywhere in the console modding scene, so that's why everyone knew to only get software from the dev's github.
But if when you are exploiting a console you know the risks, I don't see why there isn't any system in place inside Forge or other mod loaders to restrict access to the entire computer.
Building a "sandbox" like that isn't exactly easy. Java code doesn't have a simple way to prevent other Java code in the same JVM process from doing things, short of asking nicely.
To apply a sandbox, it'd have to use the operating system. Thing is, operating systems are designed to sandbox entire processes. So the sandbox would cover all of Minecraft. Which could break things in unpredictable ways.
Games with official modding support, have systems baked into the core of the game itself, to limit the mod's effects to things a mod should access. But this would require two JVM processes instead of one - there'd be a process for interacting with the outside world, and another for running the game. That's a MAJOR change to the way things work. Major enough, that you can't do it by just patching the JAR file - you'd also have to patch the launcher, and rework saving and loading and networking and texture packs and probably a whole bunch of things I have yet to consider.
Fortunately, there's already a solution. You can build the sandbox yourself, outside of Minecraft. Install it in a container or VM, and you control the connections between the container/VM and the outside world.
There are entire operating systems (Qubes is probably the best example) dedicated to making this entire process easier. But the fundamentals are readily available on Windows, Mac and Linux.

My older cousin that is really good with code got ratted a few months ago but when he finally quit Skyblock had an idea to code something and to redownload the mod. After redownloading the mod he obviously got hacked but after a few hours he got access to the ratters PC. And doxed him. Idk what he did but what I think is he coded a "mod" after getting hacked the ratters probably did something to activate the mod/code and got access to their PC
Holy crap that was alot I'm not 100% sure about this story cuz my cousin was drunk last time he told me about that story buti hope it's somewhat accurate to understand
To my understanding. Your cousin knows Python, Javascript, Java, Batch, Bash. Correct?
I'd like to add an important thing. Even installing addons from official sources isn't completely safe. If they use a shared third party library as part of the addon, that library can end up being an attack vector as part of a supply chain attack. It's surprisingly common for software packages to get attacked like this, so making sure you are careful about what you download, even legitimate mods is important.
My biggest suggestion though is starting out, confirm the md5 checksum of the file you downloaded and compare it to an official md5 if listed. if you can get in contact with the mod author and they don't have an md5 listed for downloads, ask if one can be listed. Not only will this make sure you actually downloaded it correctly, but this will also help you identify any malicious versions of the mod floating around. That checksum is essentially a representation of all the data in the jar file. It's derministic in that files that are identical will have the same checksum. Now, things called collisions can happen, but they're VERY rare. Two files accidentally having a colliding hash is a very rare chance, roughly 1 in 340282366920938463463374607431768211456. If you check both the file size and the md5 checksum, and both match up, you've got the real deal and you're almost guaranteed safe.
This is why I just use blc
Use sha instead, md5 has been broken for over a decade. Fine to use to detect random corruption, but collisions are easy to create.
@@Me-td6km for collisions of identical file size while retaining the malware, it'd be extremely hard. Hence why I said to confirm the exact file size. MD5 alone is vulnerable but in addition to existing verification techniques it's still viable. If you have to rely entirely on a hash, SHA256 is wayyy better.

CORRECTION: Chrome's passwords are NOT STORED UNENCRYPTED on your computer. They are stored in the database file, but that file is encrypted. However, email addresses are unencrypted. It also definitely helps brute-forcers because they don't have to worry about websites locking them out after a certain number of login attempts, they can just brute-force the list of passwords until the password is cracked.
never said they were unencrypted but yeah, still not something you want people getting their hands on
He lost all his savings and first thing he checks is skyblock my man got his priorities straight
He’s nerd
if i were to guess he checked sb, realized smth was wrong and realized after that that his personal information and stuff was gone too
I feel his thought process was likely checking everything he had access to once he noticed things were hacked, and that's when he noticed that. I feel that's what most people would do when they end up getting hacked like this.
He probably figured that he hadn't been on any suspicious sites and just moved to skyblock cause that's the one place where he had used something sus, the mod in his mod folder
10:00 well that is actually funny and if someone tries to install an account hacking mod and gets hacked by it it’s just ironic well deserved
That's disturbing. I recently wanted to play on a modded world with my dad, but he didn't want to install Java on his laptop (since it had his banking info on it), and I was questioning why... until now. I knew that you could get viruses from suspicious .jar files, but I didn't know they could go to that extent. That's pretty stupid that chrome not only collects and sells your information, but is also dumb enough to keep your passwords all on your computer unprotected
I’m pretty sure you don’t need to install Java to play Minecraft anymore. I think the JRE is packaged with Minecraft.
@@checkmate1284 You don't need Java to play Minecraft vanilla, but in order to play modded Minecraft, you do (which is what I was referring to). Also, I've tried to run optifine and install it without Java, and it doesn't work, I've checked
@@bigbubba0439 True. I have to have Java installed because I use Java to make mods and other programs. I've only gotten a computer virus once and it wasn't from a jar. This happened to my friend, luckily only all of his precious items were gotten rid of, he was young so he didn’t have a bank, very lucky, but damn this is the worst thing to happen to you
This happened a lot on Hypixel Pit, I used to know people that ratted many players off thousands, it happens a lot more usual than you think.
This actually happened to me, I went to take a shower right after and felt it was suspicious since it didnt do anything. I saved my minecraft account and profile in time, but I did lose like 3 billion or so. That was like 2 months ago and Ive gotten most and more on some cases back.

10:00 Pretty much same thing with "Roblox game stealers" which just instructs you in a way that it steals your login cookie
Lots of my friends got hacked by discord hackers and they just spam their entire friend list which lets them get access to your discord or worse.
Thank you for making a video on this. As a high schooler, I have a lot of friends who are not the brightest, and play skyblock. As a person who values common sense and is incredibly cautious and untrusting online, I have not gotten scammed even once in 2 years of playing skyblock. What sucks tho is that on the other hand a lot of these people I know seem to me at least to be stupid. Period. They keep messaging me “oh I got scammed” or “oh I coopadded this guy who wanted to build me a netherwart farm so I could macro”. (A lot of these people macro”).
And it just shocks me how people keep getting exploited this easily, I mean all it takes is using your brain and developing trust issues.
Anyway thanks for bringing light to this for the greater public.
It all comes down to people putting too much trust in humanity. I wasnt scammed a lot of times, one time for around 10m when I was a dumb kid, and recently for 150m+ (more embarrasing than frustrating ngl). I was supposed to give a collat to reforge a drill and it turns out the drill costs 20m instead of what I was told (i checked on ah, the problem is that the drill has way too many stats and stuff on it so you cant even see the name). The worst part is not that I lost the money, the actual worst part is that the scammer was proud of himself, like he accomplished something in life (im assuming he has done it his whole life based on is net worth). And then he proposed a ransom, he would by back from me the drill for 40m instead of 20m, but I just told him to fr*ck off, and I kept the drill as a reminder of humanity's heartlessness... (im not sure how much the drill will sell for, i didnt even bother to check, besides, who knows how many people were scammed with that drill)
Moral of the story: humans are trash and you shouldn't trust anyone...
THE END

You didn't explain the .jar thing that well so a .JAR file is a Java Executable to which Java code compiles into. A .JAR file is unlike a .EXE, because a .JAR file is executed by a Java runtime unlike a .EXE which is ran by the operating system. The AutoFlipper jar file is an actual mod, but it just runs a Java malware instead of modifying the game.
idk why there are people like this "friend" in the world. they gain ur trust then they take everything away from u. it's tragic
I really wish there was an official, in minecraft mod downloader like there is for terraria. It would make combating these kinds of things easier for so many reasons (for example, mods could no longer be sent in discord or on youtube videos. It would be easier to verify if it's the legit mod or a copy with a virus. There could be proper moderation, although I don't think microsoft would care enough (even though they don't care enough to make this system in the first place.) It's possible a like system could be added so if enough trustworthy people have likes on a mod it's more likely to be trustworthy. Maybe the mods could even be changed in a way so that it's either really difficult or impossible to use them as rats. Idk actually know how much of this is actually possible though I'm not at all qualified)
Same, tmodloader is incredible
curseforge
@@marranin007 i checked, it does not seem to have any major skyblock mods as far as i can tell
@@bgmarshall i thought you were talking about minecraft modding in general. i dont play skyblock or hypixel in the first place so this doesn't bother me.
@@marranin007 does curseforgw let you download individual mods? Thought it was only modpacks or smth
Good thing i dont have friends
The exact same thing happened to me but it was a different "mod" and i dragged it into my mod folder then got my whole skyblock profile stolen and even got a 30days banned
I think i still have his ign, its prob 11jt
He has a very good profile with at least 2b networth
this isn't just happening in the Hypixel Skyblock community, it's also happening in the 1.9+ PvP community, like people spreading RAT's saying: "This is a good ghost client you won't get banned!!" meanwhile they're getting your data.
After you run the file your files are already on the attacker's hands.
I recently got ratted too. A random guy partied me and he just wanted help. It was really suspicious but i have this thing that i just want to be nice to people and i don't want to be rude. I just helped him with something and he wanted to pay me. I asked if i could be paid in knowledge, because that is all i wanted, to get better at skyblock. He told me to flip and that he uses an autoflipper to make 30m/h. I know it was sus but he didn't just straight up send me a file. It was a 3 month old github page. I downloaded the mod, decompiled it, in the mod nothing seemed to be malicious, i couldn't find anything. I opened minecraft with the mod and then it was just the cofl mod. I didn't knew the cofl mod so i thought it was something special. But when i realized, i was too late. The guy got my session id and my ip address. He sent my my name and address on discord and i got really scared. Luckly, he didn't get any passwords but he probably took everything from my 4 yo profile and then deleted it. I also got banned on hypixel, i don't know what he did. I have this thing that i just want to help everybody and just be nice to people. It also means im naive and its easy to manipulate me. I don't get what these people try to do. Does it entertain them? Manipulating, scaring, and ruining years of work of just children? I really don't know. Sorry for typing such a long thing but it also helped my express my feelings a bit. If you read this to this point i sincerely thank you and i just hope that you will have a good day :)
tbf similar thing recently happened to me. Downloaded a mod from a friend who i though i could trust and they took everything from my profiles then deleted all of them, they didn't do anything else but I'm still scared so I'm having to reset my pc which sucks. I just dont understand these people, the guy i knew was a kid and he was willing to commit a crime for some skyblock coins. It rly is just sad and i hope more is done to help. And im sorry about what happened to you and i hope you have a good day too :)
thanks alot hope u r good now :D
@@zomkumba3877 thank you very much and im also scared when he said in the video that these things could inject into discord so resetting my pc might be a good idea
These rats are usually not obfuscated (aka the code is readable and easy to understand) and you can run them through a decompiler to see the actual src. Sometimes the rats are well obfuscated and as you said create a copy of themselves on a victims computer. These are the scarier ones and is often **Impossible** to find on a normal computer. Please Never ever download any mod from sources that are unofficial or "trusted".
thing is Hypixel skyblock is mainly played by kids so I dont think they would do that xd
1:57 What a great of an example of why you should use an actual password manager or even better, your memory for such important passwords.
This happened to me and I immediately knew. I was quick to act, factory resetting the computer from any virus and changing all of my passwords on a separate device
He had his life savings in Crypto currency so his life saving weren’t very stable in first place
"People as young as 11 might be participating as minions"
well, my underaged friend learned how to identify scams like this as young as 9.
I love the calamity music in the background

BitWarden and Dashlane: Let us introduce ourselves
the same thing happend to me, someone sent me a mod to help in skyblock. but the next day i found everything gone
3:40 I had this video open in the bg while playing terraria calamity confused on why its playing the acid ocean theme and not the normal theme
this is terrifying to me since i have 200+ hours on this profile. i know it isnt alot but ive gotten VERY lucky with ah and bz drops and it would be devistating to me.
Great documentary, thanks for making this type of videos
Love how you made the ring leaders clowns
