Getting to Tokelau, the most remote country on earth | Tokelau stories part 1

  • Getting to Tokelau is not easy, the country doesn't have an airport so you have to jump through a few hoops to get there. In this video Sam and Andrew travel from New Caledonia through Apia, Samoa to the country of Tokelau, one of the smallest, most remote and most special countries on earth. Unless you like 60 hour boat rides and the fast and the furious 6, then this vid is probably the best way to experience what we went through to get to this amazing country. Why do it yourself when we edited it all down into a 7 minute clip?
    This is the first part of a series of videos showing how to get to Tokelau, the popping and fly fishing there, and what life is like on the island.
    If you like it, let us know and we'll film more videos like this from other amazing places in the Pacific.

      No problem, we hope we did your beautiful country justice! We hope you have a chance to go home for a visit some day soon! When we made this video we were really hoping Tokelaun people would like it, and so all the lovely comments from the Tokelaun community have been a blessing. We'll try and upload one or two more videos from the footage we took 👍

      @SlowriseFishing  Před 5 lety +6

      Thanks! Don't be too scared of the boat, it's worth it. If you can get the direct boat to your Atoll then it's only 25-30 hours and you can easily sleep 15-20 of that. Unfortunately we both had 60 hour trips both ways. Andrew gave up coffee on the boat on the way there and it knocked him out good haha!
      We'd also suggest taking dry snacks, sea sick meds and a USB key with some movies on it for the boat ride... and suncream, kikomen soy sauce and breakfast cereal for your time on the island. Enjoy Tokelau, it's an amazing place!

I'm glad you'se got to enjoy this experience being in Tokelau 🇹🇰👍🏾✌🏾🙂

      Yes, it's definitely very different for men and women, which atoll were you on? Did you get out to the outer motus? After work and on weekends we didn't have a lot to do other than fishing and chatting to our friends from the island, but we love that so it was ok. Our friends were saying that the main things people do for fun are swimming, dancing, fishing and playing cricket. I feel lucky to have been there twice and see such a unique place, people and culture.

    • @SlowriseFishing
      @SlowriseFishing  Před 4 lety +1

      Hey! Sorry, CZcams had buried this in spam. Tokelau is a great place to visit, just be aware the boat schedule can vary without warning, so if you're on a tight deadline then you might end up in trouble. I think you can apply for a tourist visa at the Tokelau office in Apia, and it's a fairly straightforward process. This was done for us by the people who invited us to come to Tokelau. Hope this helps!
      Also.... BIG news is that they might be getting an airport! I would say that flights are still years away though, it is not easy to just build an airport and start planes flying, let alone customs and immigration rules etc.

    • @SlowriseFishing
      @SlowriseFishing  Před 3 lety +1

      Ok well firstly we have a couple of other videos up from the island, but they're mostly about fishing - one of the important things you have to do in Tokelau to get food. The traditions are very old school and unique Polynesian culture. There's a group of elders that makes decisions for each atoll and only 3 atolls in the country. They are often quite conservative in terms of the preservation of their culture and values. They have an amazing culture and they want it to persist. Tokelauans are amazing dancers, canoe builders, navigators, shell sculptors and fishermen. They only live on one of the motus of the atoll (except in Fakaofo where they live on two) and the rest are gardens and leisure areas. They have relatively nice houses considering how hard it is to get building materials there, but no hot water, no hosital, no restaurants or hotels and only one shop.
      The best would be to ask a Tokelauan about their wonderful country, they know a lot more about it than I do! I might see what unused footage I have and put something up, but plenty of Tokelauans also have clips up. Some of the best ones are people who live in New Zealand finally going home to Tokelau and they show you around.
      Check them out!

      Tokelau is an atoll country, their soil is sand. They can only grow coconuts, pandanas, a few other simple plants. Their diet is thousands of years old and relies heavily on fish. There are no soy beans for tofu. Veganism is a choice rich privileged societies can make. Developing countries have to eat whatever is available or starve. The climate change impacts of developed countries may one day swallow up their island nation... the CO2 from the trucks that bring your tofu from farm to plate are part of that. Tokelau has 3 large solar arrays that supply 100% of their power, they live lifestyles that leave the smallest imprint on the world environment of any people anywhere, so I think they have te right do whatever they want with the fish in their seas.

Let them go to New Zealand to live and sow.

      You've never been to Tokelau, have you? Those people have lived there for 1000+ years, it's their home and none of us have any right to tell them that their traditional way of life is wrong or unethical. They eat from the sea and the lagoon, they manage the reef like they always have and always will. If anything they should be eating more of their traditional foods like fish and root crop, and less noodles and rice that come in at great expense on the boat from overseas, but hey... if that's what they want to do it's up to them.
      There's no rich kids in yachts on this channel and certainly not in this video. Did you even watch it?
