  • CaptainMeme and Ezio begin their commentary of the 2012 webDiplomacy World Cup Final (Public Press), the longest game of Diplomacy ever played. In this video, they cover the events between Spring, 1911 and Winter, 1920.
    Diplomacy is a negotiation-based board game set during World War One. 7 players each control one great power (England, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Russia, and Turkey) and fight for control of Europe, using their diplomatic skill to make covert deals with one another and to backstab their friends.

    What's interesting to note is that, if you go through that chat log/press for this game and read it, you'd see some zany shit going on, to put it lightly. In no particular order:
    1.) The Ottoman Player needed to be replaced by ibadiam at some point in the early/mid game due to the initial Ottoman Player being banned.
    2.) The Russia Player (JECE) had what can only be described as a religious objection to the entire concept of "draws" and "stalemates", and is basically single-handedly responsible for the game continuing past ~1925.
    3.) The Italy Player (who was replaced by a teammate at some point in the late game) and the Russia Player spent most of the game at each others' throats diplomatically because they were the only two teams in the tournament that still had any chance of winning, but Russia needed to
    solo in order to win. The Italy Player just needed a draw.
    4.) The France Player (and his substitute at a later point) *both* found themselves extremely put-off by the Italy Player's conduct during the game (in press/their stabs), to the point of basically abandoning the game in an (unsuccessful) attempt at killing the Italy Player.
    5.) Lots of other ridiculous interpersonal drama that's not worth rattling off. Seriously, go read (or at least skim) the log if you have the spare time/sanity to go through 600+ pages of 7+ people having their sanity destroyed over the course of 4 IRL Years.

      I know the Austrian player also believed he could win the tournament with a 20 center solo, although I'm not sure he mentioned this in press (he has in interviews and in comments afterwards). So it wasn't solely down to the Russian!
      But this is really interesting, and the press definitely shows a lot of things we'll miss during this series. I'm planning to read through it all at some point after we're done, but man, there's an absolute ton there. I admire your dedication to get through it!

      The press in this game truly was fascinating, especially following it while the game was still in progress (at least for the first year or two). The fact that it was a Public Press game as well makes it a true Diplomacy gold mine. I believe it even broke the website's messaging system at some point due to the sheer volume of correspondence!

    By the end of this episode, tournament dynamics had already kicked in. At least by late 1917, all the other tournament games had finished and I had done the math on what was needed for my Team Iberia to win the World Cup. While other players never realized it, I already knew that the tournament could only be won by my team and Italy's team. If I could win this game, my team would win the tournament. The moment I agreed to any draw, Italy's team would win the tournament and my team would come in 2nd place.

    • @tasnica2438
      @tasnica2438 Před 3 lety +17

      Yeah, I recall my team having a slightly less optimistic perspective, believing that several countries could win the tournament by soloing, not just Russia (or Italy, of course). Either way, it definitely made for an interesting dynamic! That sure was some determination on your part to stick with it, no matter what.

    2:05:00 Why didn’t Germany also take Berlin with Kiele using support from Munich?

    • @DiploStrats
      @DiploStrats  Před 3 lety +2

      My theory on that is that he thought Bohemia would attack Munich, which would cut the support and stop him from taking the center. Germany really wanted to build here so I guess leaving Kiel for certain was more important than taking a shot at another center.

    at 1:08:30 why was EDI forced to retreat? shouldn't it have cut the support from NWG and then bounced with NTH?

    • @DiploStrats
      @DiploStrats  Před 3 lety +10

      That's the result of one of the easier to miss rules of the game - a unit can't cut support against itself. So if Nwg had been attacked from anywhere else, the support would have been cut, but because it's the province it's supporting an attack on, the support still goes through.

    I know its nothing but, for some reason I'm a bit bothered by all the gray patches on the map. Are the players not able to create new production centers in places like Finland or others or do they just get the colored parts of the map to fight over?

    • @DiploStrats
      @DiploStrats  Před 3 lety +13

      This varies a bit from website to website; some colour those territories and some don't. In Diplomacy, ownership only matters for Supply Centers - the territories with the dots - because owning one of these allows you to maintain one unit. The rest of the territories are just useful for positioning.
