    My friend owns his own brick laying company . He has a mortar mixer powered by a 8hp Briggs @Stratton horizonal shaft engine. Those engines would last one season then would give up the ghost. Nothing against B@S but that mixer was run under distress for 10 hours a day, requiring a new engine every year. I asked him one day while he was changing oil in the mixer why he didn't buy a Honda and forget the buying of a new engine annually? He said they, the Honda, was too expensive. I laughed at the tight bastard and more or less hounded him, shamed until he bought a new eight horse Honda to replace the Briggs. That was seven years ago, same engine he bought brand new is still on the machine. It doesn't look like Honda covered over with mortar soup. He changes oil in that machine every Monday morning , casually thanking me for the tip.

    Good explanation. maybe one thing to add....If you put rope into the bore through the spark plug hole to torque the flywheel nut, make sure the valve rockers are loose. Otherwise there is the potential to bend the valves if one of them end up in an open position whilst the rope packaging is under pressure.

    If those ringcompressors had a Teflon inner face they would less likely scratch the surface of the piston. This introduces piston faults before the piston even gets scratched by moving in the bore, one reason I just do it the hard way by guiding each ring into position.

    DRILL a hole in your table for the crankshaft to fall into so you can assemble the engine on it's side instead of fighting to hold it up while installing parts.

    found this video very interesting and informative, have a question, my engine hass massive kick back when i try to start it, i've check valves how many time. is there a way to check the decompressor or a specific point to set the valves with the decomp not engaged?

    • @1djbecker
      @1djbecker Před 6 měsíci +1

      A failed compression release will make it really difficult to start, but shouldn't cause kickback. That would usually be a spark timing issue, such as a sheared flywheel key.
      An engine I repaired with compression release failure was "190F" (Chinese GX420) on a Westinghouse branded generator. It had remote start, which apparently automatically cranked until the starter burnt up. After that the starter rope only lasted a handful of pull starts. I replaced the starter cord, tried to pull start, and immediately decided that the broken rope was a symptom rather than the failure.
      If you pull the valve cover and pull the engine over slowly it is easy to see the compression release bump the exhaust valve slightly.

    Im working on rebuilding a gx340 that had water in the exhaust. I honed out a rust stain on the cylinder wall, i can only faintly feel it with my fingernail. Enough that im going to try run it with new piston rings.
    But i wonder what the wear tolerance is on the piston? The measurement shows 87.5mm on the top above the top ring. And right at 88mm on the skirts. Would you bother running it with new oem honda rings with those measurements? Not looking for top performance, just to run a water pump

    • @jtkasprick
      @jtkasprick Před 4 měsíci +1

      I would just replace rings. The manual I have states the 340 having the skirt OD at 81.985 with a service limit of 81.85.

    Hi Jeff, The flywheel is keyed and can only go on one way but the fan can fit on the flywheel in three different position with the dowels. Recoil assy can only fit the fan in one position. The fan and recoil assy have the slots that line up with the holes above indicating TDC. How do you know which of the 3 positions the fan attachs to the flywheel. Thanks Great video just confused about that detail

    • @jtkasprick
      @jtkasprick Před 6 měsíci

      On the rear of the fan there should be a dowl. It fits in the hole on the flywheel. If it is not in the hole the fan will not lay flat on the flywheel.

    Great video! I have a question I hope you can provide your thoughts on. I have a crankshaft on my GX390 that is that is .0004 beyond (4.1416) its service limits (1.415). This condition is only on one spot...all other measurements are at or above the service limit. This engine drives a generator and I dont believe the cranks are not available currently. The engine ran great, but I hate putting this back together with this condition. It does have an out of round condition on the journal of 0.0017 worst case.There are no oversized bearing for this motor. Any thoughts/advice on using this crank?

    • @jtkasprick
      @jtkasprick Před rokem

      I am quessing this is the rod journel? If it is possible you could replace the connecting rod. That will eliminate some of the rod to crank clearance. Being 0.0004 past spec is very little, I would think it would still run fine.

    • @steadfastsn1p3r
