The good thing about freelancing is that you get paid for results, not the number of hours you spend sitting at a desk, so your hourly rate will increase in proportion to your skill level.
As a junior developer, this video really helped my mindset. Thank you.
SpencerTV no problem! Nice to hear it was helpful!
thank you for all your help, John. I'm 15 and last week I just got my first paying freelance job
This just made my day..specializing in one area is the key.. I see so often developers saying they know (html,css,css3,php,mysql) .. heck I was one of them until I saw this video.. Thanks John!
Yeah man. I used to as well. Glad this was helpful
$68,000/year is fine with me, John! I'd take a lot less to do what I love, which is web dev.
:) Right? More than I ever dreamed I'd make as a kid. That's for sure
Hi John! I'm really interested in the 3 step marketing course you mentioned. Can you please post the link or information on where to access it so I can check it out? Thanks!
As an apprentice electrician I have to say, if I were making 40 dollars an hour I wouldn't be watching this video. Try more like $12-$18
Congrats on being an apprentice in electrican. i graduated with electives for electricians because it really interested me. but soon after i fell in love woth coding. it also made more sense for me being that it takes 4 years to get an apprenticeship for electrical where i am located. In half that time or less..i can begin to earn something off of web dev. Of course its not jist about making money the quickest..but Im also quite the artist and have made several sample sites or projects using html..css..jquery..bootstrap..js..etc. So i think its the right path for me despite my interest for electrical as well. I live in the country so its a trade that will still stick.
Thank you for your video, you helped confirm what I was hoping. I just made the transition from Logistics to Coding/Development and was wondering if I could do the same as in other fields.
It seems that it is the same in any field. It's not about what you know but what you can provide that will fix a problem for someone else. That is what's market-able.
Will subscribe and keep watching your vids/projects.
Manuel Diera Glad to hear. Yes, clients don't ultimately care what languages you know. They care about what solutions you can provide. It's a subtle difference in messaging but makes a world of difference in results.
is the rate of higher different for those who specialize or just the pay? I'm in my young teens and I would like to go into web design as a full time job after high school/college but in the mean time I would like to get a few jobs to cover sports and boy scout expenses. I feel like I'm getting to the point where I could take on small jobs (with a lot of help from your YT channel!) and not sure what I want to specialize in yet so could advertising my self as a jack of all trades be viable?
Thanks!
Great talk!
thanks!
Great talk.
Thanks John!
+ivo francisco no problemo! 🖖🖖
John, is youf course going to be leveraging a freelancing profile in general or specific to coding?
I cover it in general although the examples I tend to use focus on web design because that's what I do but the techniques are for any freelancing.
sir which can earn more a website or an app...?
Great vid/info John, this really helps. Coming from a 44 y/o man that has worked successfully in sales for the past 15 year, I'm looking for a change up and really have enjoyed the fun and frustration over at THINKFUL in development. I would love to be very skillful at this. Any other suggestions you have would be welcomed. Thank you, John.
+Mike Michaels no problem. Glad you liked it
+John Morris well don't forget that sales stuff. You'll need it. Also find the best trainers and training and focus on learning quickly. It's all out there for you.
Your videos are really useful. May I download some of your video for my personal learning because I don't have internet at my apartment.
+anonyknowns That's really prob up to CZcams. I don't really care as long as you're not re-publishing as if they were your own. I know CZcams Red has a nice "Save Offline" feature I use quite a bit.
+John Morris sure I won't republish, thanks brother.
anonyknowns no problem.
whats the name of udemy course tho ?
Is there new information on this topic?
Hey I'm in high school and I want to take my career as Coder or Software Developer. Can you suggest me from where to start?? I just know a bit about
C++
if u want software developing start with c++,python, java. if u want web developing start with html, css, javascript, jquery
can I start freelancing with just html css js jQuery ?
***** Thank you !! Imma keep digging in, & improving myself !
what do u mean by being distinguished from wordpress ?
Yes.
Hi I just start teaching myself Front-end webDevelopment. Can You just be specific and list things I have to know to start looking for work in this profession. I know that HTML, CSS and JavaScript but what else? I'm 36 year old and don't want to waste next years on learning something that is not necessary. Thanks for answer in advance and take care:)
+Ratel 2 I answered this in my latest podcast in the Q&A segment: czcams.com/video/insVYUuYOSU/video.html
hi Ratel, I'm 35 yrs old and I'm in the same boat
+Noah Dominique Maybe we could learn together. I mean, we can share what we struggling with and so on? Have you got any programming background? Let me know what you think:)
that would be great
I'm currently working on html, I'm learning with Lynda.com, for now. are you working full time or in transition?
How about what web devers make annually working for a company. Can you talk about the salary journey of the first 5 years. Skill level, titles, opportunities, and going on your own?
Good questions. I've written these down for a future podcast.
Have you made this podcast already?
Good
I know you were just making a point about a generalist vs a specialist, but the average electrician doesn't make anywhere near $45 per hour unless they work for a major electric utility where on the job fatalities are common; and injuries usually taking away body parts or are permanently debilitating. Plumbers make even less. I think you are basing the salary on what you have to pay them. That pay goes to the company, who then pays the tradesman (whether electrician, plumber, etc..). I understand your point, but your guesstimates of tradesmen salaries raised eyebrows for guys like me who work in those fields. .
I am, because this is in the context of freelancing. As a freelancer, you ARE the company. Yes, an employee wage-earner would make less. That's really the point, tho.
Not sure if you guys know but i learned alot from this website: CodeAcedemy! its really freaking usefull and really fun to do! try it out if you want to become a web dev!
I finished HTML/CSS this morning and started Javascript, I can already confirm that this website is the only way I finally started to understand all this ! Definitely upgrading the account as soon as I can, this will be well deserved :)
Your learning programming, but are so "stupid" that you use codeacademy? it's one of the weakest place.. not to mention paid membership gives you just Quizes wich are pretty useless... use Freecodecamp .. its free.. it actually has community wich interact wich eachother... and i think it's the only place where you can actually do Real projects for non-profits ... (ive personally started with codeacademy but switched quickly.. their own markup is bugged af.. why i would learn in some enviorement wich is buggy and is outdated... , tested treehouse(wich is meant for mentally retarded people) .. some others.. ) ...
html/css is pointless to memorize.. developing aint about memorizing every syntax... (its not high school lmao). .. html/css is so ez u can just copypaste bootstrap... focus on javascript... or even better... Python... if u learn Python you will pretty much understand javascript with ease... current state of front-end is so messy ... so many framworks and nonsense in the community... ( since i dont wanna do data/science that much.. but websites) .. i prefer to learn javascript , vanilla.. that is... and Underscore, Riot
basicly this advice came from my friend who has been working as a freelance c,c+,c#,python, javascript developer over 10 years..
maybe my comment is agressive and in general weird.. not my native language... but i tottally suggest using freecodecamp.com .. not to mention u can use both.. wich is the smarter way anyways... use as many resources as you can to get a solution for your problem you know.. : p
Microphunktv
Your part about not needing to memorize syntax gave me a relief. I’ve been using freecodecamp recently. I’m new. Thanks.
10:03 *SHE* and her husband, not "her and her husband".
+humanyoda whew! You saved the world...
John Morris
Lol
wtf is up with ur neck? its bigger than your head
+Matt G (oPryzeLP) football
+John Morris note to self; don't eat footballs...
Virtus Brædder Opstrup says the guy with no picture... pfft! ;)
Lol, I wasn't trying to be offensive? I watch your videos, I couldn't care less - it was a joke. But you probably hear people say something about your neck regularly, since you jump at people like that. Loosen up, damn.
+Virtus Brædder Opstrup I think you misread that. I should have added /sarcasm I guess. I don't hear it that often tho... only from no-picture guys! 😁
