  • Factorio is an amazingly addictive automation game - In this video, I'll share my personal experience of spending over 1000 hours in the game, 1000 hours that didn't feel like they happened! The game's complexity and depth are a key factor in this - not to rule out the satisfying symphony of synchronized machinery and logistic ballet.
    So join me as I ask and answer the simple question - Should you make time for Factorio?

      Yeah but the developer is a chud who raised the game's price 2yrs after launch and has been going to war on reddit over his statement that 'women do not make good game developers' is not inherently a bigoted comment (spoiler: it is). He's also been exclaiming how he hates cancel culture and censorship while locking threads and banning people complaining about his price increase on the Steam forums or the fact he never participates in the Steam bi-annual (winter/summer) Sales 3yrs after the launch the game (6 or 7 if you consider early access). Factorio's aesthetic choices (or lack thereof) are also trash that even most mobile game do better with. Bottom line: there are plenty of other factorio-like games that probably deserve the attention.

    The Graphics deserve a much higher rating. Yes, they don't have multiple shader passes, global lighting, and all the modern tricks for high fidelity et cetera, but that isn't what is required for the game. I can look at pretty much any part of the factory and tell what I am looking at. When things go wrong, I can see where the problem lies at a glance. With the large number of types of things in the game and the high complexity of many designs, this is really quite an accomplishment. I would say that the graphics presentation is one of the things that really makes Factorio so much fun to play.

      Nah, I don't about that. The sprites of the early versions were truly hideous and clearly done by someone with no love for visual aesthetics.
      The new graphics are much better and the game did find its visual language eventually.
      I wouldn't say it is visually great, though, and there are still some things that annoy me even after 100s of hours, like why does the assembler, ie the most common production building, not have a better activity animation? I can see at a glance whether my furnaces or miners or power plants are working, but with assemblers, it is just some gears wiggling around that are impossible to see when zoomed out.

As well, unlike Satisfactory/etc., you can get an unobstructive overview of your entire operation with a single press of the key.

    I haven't gotten past oil processing in Factorio mainly because I am too tired after work to really put my mind to it. Learning how to set up circuit conditions so that nothing backs up and puts your entire base into a screeching halt is difficult for me, but as you said, there are many amazing resources to help teach people. Some of my favorite youtubers make videos on Factorio. It is definitely a fantastic game though. It may be easy to get overwhelmed, but the feedback loop you get from understanding mechanics is incredibly addictive. Oil Processing is the first real hurdle in the game - its not just a new mechanic with "byproduct" - light oil, heavy oil etc. but also requires a significant reworking of the factory and how you think of logistics- eg: do you process on site where the rigs are? do you pipe or use a train to process on main base?
      once you master that it easy town to rocket land.

    • @trikop7575
      @trikop7575 Před rokem +3

      @@MrHossie you can also go launch the rocket by simply building more storage tanks and skipping the cracking, my first playthrough went like that xD

    • @KeithOlson
      @KeithOlson Před rokem +2

      FWIW, getting oil /somewhat/ balanced is actually pretty easy and doesn't require any combinators/etc. Just have pumps going into and out of each line and connect them to the storage tanks for each product. (e.g. For making petroleum from light oil, set the light oil input pump to only turn on when light oil is greater than 10k and the petroleum output pump to only trigger when petroleum is less than 10k.) By using this simple system, you can ensure that nothing ever runs out and there shouldn't be any blockages, either. If necessary, you can add pumps & flare stacks to burn off any excess if it gets to be more than 90% of the storage capacity.
      Cheers!

    I bought Factorio over 5 years ago and have well over 4k hours played according to Steam. The base game is great as is but once you start adding mods it becomes a rabbit hole that I've yet to find the bottom of. They range from simple Quality of Life changes to a complete game overhaul. I've played Bobs & Angels. Seablock is my nemesis. Warptorio is one of my favorites. DangOREus adds an interesting twist to how fast/far you can expand. Alien Biomes adds a whole new feel to the game with lots of different terrains including swamps and lava fields. I'm currently doing a playthrough of 248k and am really enjoying it. Mods or no mods, what keeps bringing me back is the random map generator. No two play throughs are exactly the same because of different terrains, ore spawn locations, and biter nest locations. Want to make the game easier? Turn off the biters and pollution and max out the resources settings. Harder? Set the resource quantities and locations super low and crank up the biters so high that Starship Troopers would worship you as a god if you survive.
    I've played Satisfactory and Dyson Sphere Program. While the graphics of both games are definitely higher grade than Factorio they just don't have the same draw for me.

    Personally, I disagree on two things: Learning Curve and Graphics.
    I found the learning curve to be quite smooth, actually. While factories and production lines can grow quite large and complex, the means with which you build them are rather simple - input/output with inserters, move with belts. The concept of applying those mechanics, but on a larger scale, were quite self-explainatory to me [ granted, I started playing in 2015, the game was "simpler" then. ]
    For graphics, I personally welcome the "simple" pixelart/sprite graphics. Just about every other game these days is some fancy 3D nonsense, so the artstyle of Factorio was/is a very welcome change from other games I play ^^

    I have over 1000 hours in factorio, and one map I have a megabase with about 3k spm. It's just hard to continue that one because biter attacks cut the ups in half.
    Every time I try to make a new map I now just get burned out barely even starting red science. I will probably resume for real when the expansion comes out, which might be a couple years. Hopefully they will optimize the performance of biter pathing, trains, and nukes in the future.

    •  Před rokem

      2 tips: Disable biters if you just want to build big megabases; they're antithetical to that to begin with.
      Second one is to install a builder robot startup mod, or even the "skip first hour" one. The builder robot one gives you a power armor with a couple roboports and 100 construction bots to allow blueprint usage, cut&paste modifications etc from the get-go. You still need to research and build robots for everything else, those just make the early game more user friendly. (And if you go with the skip 1st hour one, it'll give you electric miners and a bunch of inserters and belts so that you can start building a decent starter base immediately without wasting time with burner drills etc)

    • @michaelzomsuv3631
      @michaelzomsuv3631 Před 4 měsíci

      My trick is to scale down the bugs' evolution and expansion proportionate to the size of the megabase you want to make.

      Yes, it does. Satisfactory might not be as good as Factorio from a game play perspective, but it has far superior graphics, especially after switching to Unreal Engine 5 recently, it looks absolutely gorgeous right now at max settings.

    The art style feels perfect for a game where you make a dirty polluting factory.
    Every machine is highly detailed yet its easy to have an overview when you zoom out.

The Factorio sprites are much more intricately detailed then something you'd see in Satifactory, hell all the sprites are generated from 3D models if you didn't realize.
