  • Dry fitting an engine can be a bit of a task but finding the correct position for the shaft can be another matter altogether. Fun and games this week and squeezing into tight spaces.

    You must work around some awesome folks. I absolutely love that from time to time, you have a mechanic, or John the joiner/ string line guy, or some other random from your industrial park that is willing to step over for a few minutes and lend a hand. Good stuff.
    Still grinding through (I've watched the most recent two videos now, but also went back and started at the very beginning, and have made it this far). The audio quality, editing, etc. is all getting better (but honestly not why we're all watching). Love the can-do attitude, sense of humor, and some of the non-build stuff too. Looking forward to when your videos about life on the hulls are...on the water!
    I went out and signed up on Patreon to through you a few bucks each month....well worth it! I encourage anyone else to do the same.

    Cheers , we always set the engine and lined up the angle for the shaft and drilled a hole in the stern for the shaft tube and installed the shaft to line it all up and then drilled the engine beds down as not to have to redrill new mount holes . Just a thought but you bring back a lot of great memories building large Fiberglas boats here in the States

    You should mount a laser pointer to the flange projecting aft, and then rotate it to give reference aft to the bulkhead. Maybe too late at this point. The arc would give a perfect center

      @LifeOnTheHulls  Před 3 lety +2

    • @honorharrington4546
      @honorharrington4546 Před 3 lety

      This is an easy exercise if you approach it the correct way. Work from your fixed point first. What diameter prop? This determines where the shaft must be located vertically. Is there a thrust angle plus or minus from the centerline of the hull? In this case no. Transmission flange angle? 7 Degrees.
      Drill a pilot hole with a 1/8 to 1/4" long bit at the 7 degree angle from the outside into the engine bay. Aadjust laterally to intersect the centerline on the inside and increase size to fit the bushing tube. If you wedge a laser pointer inside the tube and rotate the tube it will do a perfect circle around the shaft axis.
      The prop determines the engine placement. not the other way around.

    Hi Ross to get a perfect shaft alignment install the prop shaft coupling direct to the gearbox (leave out the flex disc) install the stern tube and skeg bushes if it has then tack them in place with epoxy mix. after glassing just slide in the coupling

    • @rogerdinnis3816
      @rogerdinnis3816 Před 3 lety

      Russell Palmer I used to fit engines into boats. I always built an exact wooden frame of the engine with two holes, one exactly centred on where the drive shaft should exit the engine and another exactly at the other end of the engine. This frame was made to the supplied engineers drawings. Placing the frame onto the mounts I could then line up the two holes and mark and drill the hull exit holes. It also helped with lining up 'p' brackets. Took ages to make the frames accurately (every engine seemed to be different) but it only took minutes to do the final work.

    Ross I have been watching Expedition Evans recently, a couple who have purchased a damaged /salvaged 2008 Beneteau 49. But its great to watch you guys on CZcams building and fixing boats.

    • @DWAJarrett
      @DWAJarrett Před 3 lety

      I hope the Evans's have a good engineer as the fiberglassing is the least of their problems. I believe that much movement of the liner may have caused delamination in the hull at the upper edges of the liners ribs over and above the rear area of the keel/hull.

  • @MrDuncanMorgan
    @MrDuncanMorgan Před 3 lety +1

    You should try rotating the flange, with the jig attached, or laser as suggested by Wasamatau. If you rotate it and the jig is not perfectly perpendicular in both planes, then the body will describe a cone, and tip a circle on the exit bulkhead. Small circle the jig is near perfect, a big circle the jig is not so good. But in either case a good check of the jig, and proved or improved accuracy of the exit point.

But I have several problems, the stern of my boat is up in the air to fit in my shed because of the skeg and cuddy cabin limits how the boat sits on its cradle to make it fit inside, so I am working downhill in close confines, I have rheumatoid arthritis in both knees with severe sciatica as well, and I don't bend like I used to, as well as that, I can't see what I am doing either. It's a bit like shoveling peas uphill with a spoon. I was fine 10 yrs ago when I started this project, I just can't figure out what's gone on! Rossco, will you still be building kayaks? Good on you for making a beautiful business the dream of another younger person! Your motor alignment reminds me of a 120 foot catamaran barge I built for harvesting algae from a lake in Oregon USA. I had to align to drive pods with Chevrolet 502 gas engines connected to jet drives to the stern of each 120 foot steel hull. Same thing in making sure each jet drive was aligned with the other so they would drive at the same angle. I tried to get them to go diesel motors because the generator and all other pumps were diesel on the barge but they opted for cheaper gasoline engines. Good luck and it is exciting to see some of the drives coming in. I have to admit I will be more excited to see the mast and rigging going in. You have a wonderful case of OCD for details like myself. Keep the Vlogs coming. Blessings to you and your family!

    Good episode Ross
    How long did those fancy animations take this time?

  • @aserta
    @aserta Před 3 lety +1

    Before it's too late, you should figure out and devise a means to lift the engines at sea/not on the hard. In simpler terms, a structure that exists half built inside the engine bays, which when completed (like a circuit) allows you to move the engine for more involved work. You've the opportunity to do it, others wish they had something like this and not have to borrow cranes or improvise ones. Just my 2 cents on it, and following the old adage, better to have it, and not need it.

  • @latitudeash
    @latitudeash Před 3 lety

    No wonder it takes a long time to do the vid's with all the animations. That said worth it to the viewers, we can see why it has to be spot on to get the shat inline and hence at the right angle providing the engine is in the right spot. My question is how do you stop the back end of the engine from drifting off centreline?

    • @LifeOnTheHulls
      @LifeOnTheHulls  Před 3 lety +1

      Motor has elastomer blocks in between mount and motor that absorb a lot of the vibration and 8 bolts per motor should see it stay balanced.Careful monitoring of lag screws will ensure it stays secure and in line.Rossco

    • @latitudeash
      @latitudeash Před 3 lety

      @@LifeOnTheHulls Ross, I would go do a bit more research into how you can absorb the engine vibrations. In a car they use rubber feet sandwiched between a metal top and bottom plate. I am assuming that’s the elastomer blocks. Still worth seeing how the new cats do it.

    • @LifeOnTheHulls
      @LifeOnTheHulls  Před 3 lety +1

      @@latitudeash that is correct,however all production boats these days are sail drives prone to maintenance issues,diaphragm seal issues,external seal marine growth,and electrolysis with aluminium housings.Very costly to repair/ service,shaft drive simply a prop ,cutless bearing and pss seal internally serviceable and less likely to be damaged by floating debri ropes etc.vibration will not be an issue.Bearers are tied in the hull,act as stringers and easily adjustable.I know of shaft driven yanmar bosts in our area with 60years on them with no movement on bearers.Sail drives max 25years before replacement legs.
