Nah don't believe that , if in sci-fi energy can be created out of the quantum realm , why can't It be scaled up for use to defend a planet , sounds to me like plot device , also I would have those sheilds be able to absorb the energy of weapon X of your choice to make them stronger or help in the recharging of said sheilds.
Also, I would use them to envelop said enemies' ships, and the sheild would reflect the weaponry back at said ships.
Or use them to crush those ships.
I patent those ideas BTW.
Why not have a weapon that syphons off the sheilds energy.

Exponentially rising enery requirements is an easy technobable reason. Energy requirements rising by the power of 10 for every time the surface area of the shield is doubled.

No I think it's less of a right-wing thing and more of showing that women in leadership like to give up and concede whereas it takes a man to actually fight a war.
