The older I get the more I admire this writer. I just reread his Memoir and still found myself unabashedly shedding tears at the end of it. No fancy writing, indeed; just the truth. Along with William Trevor he makes Ireland and the Irish come alive for the imagination. Kudos from the Philippines!

Just listening to this brings back memoriesJohn McGahern really captured life as it was in Ireland
the way of life and the way we all spoke. John McGahern so proud of this writer who hails from my own county of Leitrim in Ireland. He has passed on now to his eternal reward
but we still miss him and his writings. Thanks for seeing this video.

Sorry to be so off topic but does anybody know a method to get back into an instagram account?
I somehow lost the login password. I would love any assistance you can give me.

John captured the soul of Irish people in his work. His spirituality suffused his writing and his humour shines through in this riveting interview.

I read John's memoir and his writing is ridiculously good. I'd safely say he is Ireland's best writer

Never heard what McGahern actually sounded like until now. Thanks for posting.

+kelman727 I'm so glad you enjoyed his show. I find that, especially as Americans reading international literature, it's vital to hear the voice. If you enjoyed Mr. McGahern's show, perhaps you'd be interested in the shows with other Irish novelists, like Colm Tóibín, Anne Enright or Colum McCann. Thanks for watching.

Cette interview est très intéressante. On apprend beaucoup en peu de temps. Terry Winch est un peu coincé mais il pose de bonnes questions et McGahern réussit l exploit de le faire rire !

Translation: This interview is very interesting. You learn a lot in a short time. Terry Winch is a bit uptight but he asks good questions and McGahern manages to make him laugh! (Thank you Jean-Paul)

Oh I've already seen the others, thanks.
I'm English, by the way. McGahern taught my father when he worked over here as a teacher.

+kelman727 Wonderful that you've watched others. I hope you enjoy all our shows, and if you're ever in the D.C./Baltimore area in February, come on by our Evening of Irish Music and Poetry. McGahern must have been an amazing teacher.

What was he like as a teacher.???... a live radio programme was once paying tribute to him as a writer when a few former students rang in to say he was a very violent teacher

      Restrained, sure of himself.
And never violent, which was illegal.
