  • I know a 60 litre biorb isn’t ideal, but these guys live on a Narrowboat where space is at a premium. They were tiny when I got them but as they grew, I got fed up with the inadequate biorb filter system.
Replacing it with a large modified sponge filter has transformed the set up.
Sticking to a simple maintenance program, 80% water change twice a week and rinsing the sponge once a week keeps the water quality perfect.
As for the fish keepers that think you can only keep goldfish in an Olympic size swimming pool, all I can say is these fish are pampered and in superb health.
I will gladly answer any questions posted in the comments.
    Happy fish keeping ,, Warren

I've seen on sponge filters that the area covered by the sponge has holes or slits in them to allow the suction of water to travel though them, did you add any extra holes or slits in the tube?

      Hi ,
In answer to your question , I didn’t add any extra holes to the tube that runs through the sponge. The tube has long slatted holes so that wouldn’t be necessary.
What I did to make the sponge fit the biorb was this.
I removed and discarded the weighted base of the filter. Then I cut out the bottom part of the tube and then slid the sponge, with tube inserted, into the cup that previously held the original biorb filter.
The standard large sponge filter is a perfect fit. By removing the bottom part of the sponge filter tube, the standard biorb airstone supplies the sponge with the air it needs to do the job.
I left in the original stones that came with the tank.
Maintenance is 80% twice weekly change of water and once a week rinse of the sponge in a bucket of tank water.
I’m the first to admit that it’s not a great looking set up with the big sponge in the middle of the tank, but the difference it has made has been amazing. From week one the water has remained constantly crystal clear.
The fish are immaculate, very active and voracious eaters. I don’t feed these guys sinking food as this would just disappear into the rocks at the bottom.
I feed them hikari Oranda gold, which floats and the fish love it.
I hope this has been of some help to you.
Happy fish keeping , regards warren

How you fit this sponge filter

      Hi Sanjoy,
It is a standard large sponge filter. All I did to fit it was remove the base, the sponge then fits neatly in the space where the old useless biorb filter was.
I left the biorb air stone fitted and that runs the sponge.
It doesn’t look that pretty but it’s a brilliant way of keeping larger fish in a biorb.
I gravel vac the lava rock around the sponge once a week and do a 50% water change.
I hope you found this helpful.
      Happy fish keeping

      Hi Sanjoy,
It would be the shortest video on CZcams ! It’s simple. 1) remove standard filter cartridge & tube from the biorb. 2) remove weighted base from sponge filter. 4) insert sponge into space where biorb cartridge filter used to be over the air stone. Job done ! Regards warren

Hi, the standard biorb filter is completely removed. No carbon I am not a fan of it. The standard large sponge fits just perfectly into the space left where the biorb filter used to be. No need to screw it in , just push it down. Still works fine now. Happy fish keeping 🙂

Hi, I’m sorry I don’t. It is the standard large size sponge filter available from most aquatic shops or Amazon & eBay. Diameter 120 mm. you could use the Boyu SF-103 or SF-104. Hope this helps.
