Springtime Carnivore is a project from singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Greta Morgan, best known for her work with Gold Motel and The Hush Sound. The majority of her eponymous debut is simply Morgan and bassist Chris Faller in a practice space, though the songs sound big enough to disguise the modesty of their creation. Much of the album falls somewhere between indie pop and clever appropriations of the past, suggesting a meeting of Dusty Springfield and Kate Bush. Today's Song of the Day is the dazzling first single "Sun Went Black", a buzzy burst of slightly psychedelic-tinged synthpop, with heavy, New Order-style bass, faded strings, blown-out drums, and buoyant vocals.
