  • In 1989, Atlético Nacional, from Medellin in Colombia, won the Copa Libertadores. They became the first Colombian team to win the tournament.
But did drug cartel leader, Pablo Escobar, help them win the title ? Did he influence the outcome of the tournament ?
While some say Escobar threatened officials, others say these claims are untrue. This video includes commentary, from all those who were involved. The story we tell, is fascinating, complex and compelling.
And, whatever the truth about Escobar's reach, the fact remains: in 1989, Atlético Nacional became the Kings of America.
This is a look back at the 1989 Copa Libertadores: the controversies, the great players, and a fascinating story.

No deseo insultar a ningun equipo.

A brief word about this video from the creator (in English):
I mean no disrespect to Atletico Nacional fans. I am a great admirer of all Colombian football, and Colombia as a nation.
I made this video, to discuss some aspects of the 1989 Copa Libertadores, and to tell an interesting story. But, it is not to attack Atletico Nacional, or disrespect the team in any way.
Thanks to all my viewers and subscribers. I hope you enjoy my existing and future content. Thank you to everyone.

      Hey mate,
I am glad you enjoyed the videos. I will have to check my computer as to where I obtained the footage. I usually purchase videos from archives in various nations, or sometimes I will use news clips. When I use clips of games, the broadcasters are monetized. (I don't mind, I just like telling stories TBH , I don't do this for money, really I would like to attract attention to the Copa Libertadores).
I will check and get back to you with where I found the archives.
I can also, if you give me an email address, put all the videos I used in a DropBox archive, and send them to you that way, if you like.
Also, if you like, you are free to download and use the clips from my video, any, or all of the clips.
Take care mate and all the best.

Hi mate, I just wanted to get back to you about the Pablo Escobar clips.
I have a terrible system, where I download videos and rename them, but they're scattered and disorganised.
Most of them are from video archives which I pay for (so I buy and use archival videos for the most part).
Other clips I obtained just by asking some rights holders, including some documentary film studios.
Others still are from football agencies in South America, who own the clips when they had the licences for specific years. They have granted me permission to use the clips for any purposes. Sometimes, although not often, the videos I obtained from player reps, will trigger a CZcams licensing notification. I've never been asked to remove any videos, because what happens is, I'm allowed to use the videos, but any money from ads or anything must go to the rights holders. That's the agreement.
Which is great, since I don't make money from these anyway. I wouldn't ever insert advertising, except for my own channel so others can watch more videos if they want.
Also, broadly, in most cases, I have edited and altered the footage sufficiently to create a new product which is deemed to be a new legal entity in my country's laws.
So I'm allowed and licensed to use and distribute those clips.
You can use anything you find in my video, anywhere you like. If you can credit back to my channel to help me grow it would be great, but you don't have to.
My goal is just to help open up the world of South American football, and particularly the Copa Libertadores, to people who mainly watch European football.
I'm not interested in making money, I only want people to see the beauty of South American football and especially the passion and wonder of the Copa Libertadores.
Anyway, use whatever you like as there are no copyright restrictions on this video.
If you want a more specific list, let me know and I'll try to dredge one up. The problem is, once I obtain permission for the videos and download them, I rename them and often forget where they come from.
I only write down where they come from in certain cases like, if some archive, or news channel, asks me or wants me to credit them, I write down in those instances.
But most of these are from Colombian TV news channels, from player agencies in Brazil, and from video archives. So you're fine to use anything in the video.
Let me know if you need more help or assistance mate. All the best. I hope you enjoy the videos I continue to make. And I'll be keen to see your video as well !

• @Golimetry
      @Golimetry  Před 4 lety

Hi, thanks for the comment. There is some dispute over which team he was a fan of: in South America, most people regard him as an Atletico Nacional fan. However, some have said he was actually a fan of their crosstown rivals, Deportivo Independiente Medellín (DIM).
      Both teams are from Medellin.
So it's actually, insofar as I've been able to ascertain, not really certain whether he supported DIM, or Atletico Nacional.
My view is he likely supported both, or, at least financially, may have just supported Atletico Nacional un their 1989 season - Fransisco Maturana focused the team on winning the Copa Libertadores campaign that year. Which they did (as my video talks about).
I definitely don't want to make a definitive claim as to whether he was a supporter of one team or the other. He may have supported DIM in the league but desired to help Nacional win the Copa Libertadores - the equivalent of the Champions League, but for South America, the Copa Libertadores is even more important.
Players have said they'd rather win a single Copa Libertadores than two Champions Leagues. (Deco said this actually: he won two UCLs, one with Porto and one with Barca, and he said he'd trade both for a single Copa Libertadores.)
So the Copa Libertadores is really important in South American football. It's seen as more of a people's tournament, where any team can win, with the UCL being more of a commercial, although still prominent, tournament.
But everyone has different opinions and I understand, and respect that. My goal here with these videos, is to encourage football fans who may only watch European football, to view more South American football. And the best entry point is the Copa Libertadores.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the video. Let me know if you have any more feedback.
Thanks alot for the comment and for watching, I appreciate all feedback and suggestions, comments, anything.
      Take care mate.

    • @Golimetry
      @Golimetry  Před 4 lety

BTW, Where did you hear that Escobar was a fan of Deportivo Independentie Medellin (if that's the team you heard he supported), and not Nacional ? I'm quite interested to know.
And I'm always interested in any feedback my viewers have to offer. Improvements, changes, good feedback, bad feedback, anything !
And even if you're not a football fan, I still would love to hear your thoughts, because my objective is to get current fans of European football to take a look at South American football, and even more broadly, to get people who don't watch football, to take a look and hear some of the fascinating and crazy stuff.
They are just awesome stories too, in my view.
So anything you have to say is very important to me, it's more valuable than money, I'm not that focused on money here with this project, I just want to make videos that tell interesting stories.
Okay, thanks again mate and all the best.

I certainly had no intention to attack or disrespect Nacional in this video and I have no agenda as to Escobar's influence - I just thought it was an interesting story and worth telling. I aimed to show both sides and ensure that the video told a good story but was even-handed.
