I don't understand how I never came across your tutorials earlier. They should be just as popular (if not more popular) than Video Copilot's tutorials or maybe Film Riot's. You can't expect to be able to create crazy in depth effects without completely understanding After Effects' basic functions and the power they have. This tutorial specifically is helping me correctly animate a flight path for some space ships in my Element 3D scene with drone footage. You sir have incredible tutorials, they are SO well explained and I plan on watching all of them over the course of the next few weeks. If I somehow pass you next time I'm in Canada I am buying you multiple beers.
Can do. Looks like shape layers and what is actually just many simple animations, but the composition and variety of those animations is what does it. I'll see what I can do :) Excellent suggestion.
Very nice explanation! keep up the good work! An easy way to spin things without keyframes: veloc = 30; // will rotate 30 degrees every second r = rotation + (time - inPoint) *veloc; [r]
Well that would perfectly explain why my animations were always messing up. I could never figure out the difference between the two, until now! Thanks for boring the crap out of me whilst teaching me something as well!! :)
Nice Tips & Trick for difference in rotation & orientation, I normally used to do with hit & trial but this tutorial made a great day for clear understanding. Thanks
I really love these tutorials and they work for my level because I haven't experimented with some things, like the waveform, but since you mentioned it, you should make the most advanced tutorial you can. See how quickly you can lose me and how balls to the wall you can make it.
Generally it's helpful to do any orbiting with rotation, and think of orientation as how the axis rests in the world. If you want to go from one angle to another in the quickest most direct way, orientation is the way. If you want granular control over how you change on each axis, rotation is the way.
Hey, looking at your channel you have a lot of growth already from first video to latest so I think you're doing great. Technically I think you're solid and expanding on concepts well. I would say experiment more with motion and more kinds of motion with the graph editor for some more variety. And conceptually i would say explore the them of the song a bit more and try finding animations that are more in line with the tone, meaning, and metaphor of the words? But all in you've got great stuff.
Genius! VERY well explained. Thank you. I'll include that in my thought process... I'm very new but it's nice to learn "tricks" like these. You're funny, too. That helps!
Thank you thank you a lot for your feedback...You may not have any idea how much your comment mean to me, coz I respect and love your works and tutorials that much...I will keep all your suggestions in mind, for my future projects...
I know you did a tutorial on the graph editor which really helped me out. I think the graph editor will be used extensively in this one? I'm not sure though but i'm definitely looking forward to the tutorial :D
Oh okay :) Similar thing has happened to me. When I add the finishing touches in Vegas and forget to disable resample and I end up with that HORRIBLE ghosting. Thanks for the tutorial though, really helps to have a visual representation like this.
I'm not a beginner but I honestly just never took the time to really figure out the difference between rotation and orientation. So thank you for the video. I'm curious though, how often would you also use a null object to add different control methods to this cube? Does orientation basically remove the need for something like that? Because honestly that's probably how I would have done that due to my ignorance of the usefulness of orientation. Thanks again.
How often? As often as a project's specific needs require it. Does one negate the other? Maybe. But one thing does not negate another thing. Techniques are meant to solve problems. So sometimes you just don't have that problem. and sometimes you find a better technique.
I think its way better to work the tools if you get the tools concept. I mean if you deep understand how and when apply every one of 'em. You can do amazing things. Thanks by the lesson BTW.
It takes like 2 minutes to make. You'll be fine. Just make a solid that's a square, move the anchor point half the width on the z axis and rotate copies 90 degrees and 180 degrees and you're done. Nothing to it.
Top of the bill tuts! Always the best explanation you can get. You got it! Many thanks for sharing, learning and give your knowledge to the world. In this tut you have a very bright interface with blue figures (the variable parameters). In CS6 you see them in yellow. How can you get them in CS6 in blue with a dark (not bright) interface? Is it possible to choose that in After Effects or is it only possible in the CC 2014 version? Thanks!
You can change the look of your interface in the preference. Some things however cannot be changed. The new version is blue and that's what Adobe things people want. If you want older versions of Ae to have blue labels you'll need to open up some of the source code.
Kurt Van Impe yeah my tip is to NEVER do it. Especially for something as trivial as altering the colour of an interface element. And besides there must be bigger fish to fry. And if there aren't, go fishing.
I like this video. It helped. But someone please help me out. When replacing a screen with a plane (mocha doesn't help), how do I go about rotating/orienting the plane to fit the screen?
so you have some footage, and in that footage is a TV screen or a phone screen? And you want to replace that screen with a layer of some kind? Is that what you're after?
"Orientation will always try to find the fastest route to get from one position to another"... BOOM.. Thank you, man.

cant believe a video 8 years ago save me in 2021
Glad you enjoy the infotainment. It might not be the most revolutionary stuff on this channel but it's at least ripe with lols from time to time.
These tutorials are incredible. They are a tremendous help. You are a great Educator.
No worries, glad you enjoy it.
so would you like to see more tutorials or more lessons like this that aren't about a specific goal but more about interface and concepts?
Can do. Looks like shape layers and what is actually just many simple animations, but the composition and variety of those animations is what does it. I'll see what I can do :) Excellent suggestion.

man you always do it before we wonder
next time we need it directly about the meaning of life
i am sure you have the answer
aliens comes second
well you are most welcome. I'm getting the feeling more like this would be a good thing
Fantastic explanation,
thank you for helping me to understand the difference
Well that would perfectly explain why my animations were always messing up. I could never figure out the difference between the two, until now! Thanks for boring the crap out of me whilst teaching me something as well!! :)
Good topic, great explanation, clear voice, excellent sense of humour ! Bravo !
Keep it up

My guess is that Orientation is to be used for partial orbit shots (most of which don't go beyond 180 degrees) while rotation is mostly for subjects.
Generally it's helpful to do any orbiting with rotation, and think of orientation as how the axis rests in the world. If you want to go from one angle to another in the quickest most direct way, orientation is the way. If you want granular control over how you change on each axis, rotation is the way.
You are welcome. And oh yes, at least once per month per video. Maybe I do. Which is cool. We are both Canadian after all.
Excellent. Glad you enjoy.
Yes, Time Vampire, it was helpful. Thanks for doing the video and making it entertaining.
You're very velcome. ;)

This are the best tutorials on youtube!
Yes it was useful. And I never thought to put a wiggle expression on orientation.
well thanks for saying so. I'm happy it's helpful.
thanks, this was a great ORIENTATION to the subject
Wow man. There are many *advance* tutorials but im pretty fucked up with basics so im gonna subscribe to u.
Looked for this on Google and there you were. I did a good thing when I subscribed. Thanks!
You are most welcome.
Thanks, I'll see what I can do. My goal is one a week if not more. but we'll see how that plan goes.
Excellent. I'll see what I can do on that.
You are professional instructor. I hope you get million subscribers.
Genius! VERY well explained. Thank you. I'll include that in my thought process... I'm very new but it's nice to learn "tricks" like these. You're funny, too. That helps!
Thanks! Your Channel is amazing. You do a real good job of making tutorials informative without it's normal sedative properties
Useful indeed. Now I need to go and rotate with confidence!
Cool. Thanks. Sometimes the tutorial thing is good when you're looking to do something specific. But this format for general knowledge is great too.
I want to say it's because I graded in premiere with less than stellar compression results?
I'm going to guess you want to know what font I used. It's Bebas Neue.
I don't even have After Effects and I watched the whole video!
You sure your not a Time Vampire!! :-)
you can put a wiggle expression on anything... an y thing. Put it on a fill effect color picker and get ready to have a seizure ;)
That's that cleared up... thanks a lot! Also, I learned about keggers. Good things are happening.
Evan, you're like the Master Yoda of After Effects.
Thanks! Thats what I was looking for... I've learned in a good angle. Thanks again
Love
I love this kind of thing you time vampire! Thanks yous
Solid. I feel better about myself.. and this video :0
How can you be both good looking and best animator* at the same time...I am jelous :)
I'll see what I can do. Thanks :)
Thank you thank you a lot for your feedback...You may not have any idea how much your comment mean to me, coz I respect and love your works and tutorials that much...I will keep all your suggestions in mind, for my future projects...
Which one was that? I make the motion typographers too often to keep track of most. Cheers.
keep em coming! great stuff as always
cool, glad its helpful.
Your awesome tutorials never stop amazing me! *salutes*
Hey .. Earlier you did a tutorial on typography .. can you do a full tutorial on that exact one you did as it looked awesome XD
you are welcome.
Best explanation about Orientation .... Do you have tutorial for Point of Interest?
I'M JUST GOING TO WATCH ALL THIS GUYS VIDEOS FOR THE FUNNY COMMENTS, YEAH, AND TO LEARN TOO, BUT MOSTLY THE COMMENTS THOUGH :D
THANK YOU SO MUCH !! IT´S AWESOME, YOU ARE AWESOME. MAKE SOME MORE PLS. BECAUSE YOU´VE GOT EXCELLENT HUMOR. AND VOICE. S/O
I’ve made a few more since this one. I try to get a couple out each month though :) I’ll keep making them as long as people watch and enjoy.
Liked it before watching it
Yes tutorials are great!

Good information!!!!!
awesome! Can i call myself Great Abrams from now on?
love ur tutorial!!! ur awesome!
you are really good and funny - big like

Video Successful! Knowledge Absorbed!
Correctamundo, it is a lot to do with the speed of the animations.
ooh.. dear.. Thanks for your lecture.. so I do understand…. ㅠㅠ thanks, thanks
You're welcome 😊

Nice job! Any chance you'll upload your cube so we have a pre-fab object/group of layers to play with?
Perfect, just what I needed :)
that was handy.. .tanks!!
Is it just me or does it sound like Seth Rogan is teaching me AE?
I can't unhear this now.
very useful thanks
Great Tutorial! Thumbs up :P

ECAbrams Any tips & tricks to open up the source code or is that to dangerous? Tnx.

awesome
As a starter in after effects, my mind is oriented and rotating🙃
Thanks for this ...all good info :)
Richard
uk
so useful Thank you
mmm tasty rage. Cheers!
*returns salute* we aim to please.
"because it thinks it's so much smarter than you" lmao
What was the shortcut you used to add a keyframe on the z rotation at 8:28
I feel the same way :) but if you tell two friends, and they tell two friends that will be like 4 more views :)
I made one of those deals with devil people keep talking about. Sadly I have no soul any more as a result.
Thank you ! and u r very funny ! keep going !
Thanks! :)
no sure if i would describe anything in visual effects as balls to the wall... but I'll see what I can do. :)
thanks a bunch!
Slainte!
how did you changed your after effects template white???
Thank you! Btw, has anybody told you sound like Seth Rogen?
More Than Anything
lol. well I will see what I can do

Yes exactly. And the screen in the footage is moving from off-screen
