- BJ4077 , Here it is once again!
Not sure why this was taken down but I'll make sure it's always on YT.
Sorry to everyone who I made wait this long for it.
Live from The Porter Wagoner Show , it is simply a timeless classic.
Enjoy! - Hudba
The greatest song about crippling depression ever written.
Lars Andersen. Awesome. Thrilled!
Solid.
Or just introversion.
We might need this song again soon.
“Humorous “ take on loneliness
RIP Harold Reid, the basso profundo of the group. This song is my favorite, especially when Harold sings the “kang” syllable before the others do. He will be missed...😢
When they appear I find myself watching Harold only! He was the best!!!! And I am like you. That "kang" gets me everytime!
That is also my favorite too!
Rumor has it that Harold's "nuts dropped" on the same night that he was conceived, hence the deep baritone voice that makes Barry White sound like a "eunuch" by comparison! Hahaha
@@Stanley.1977 Harold was certainly eunuch- er, I mean unique!
Depression. Sitting around not caring what happens. Hiding from your friends. When it was written the writer was just dumped by his girlfriend. He had fallen into a deep depression and just stopped caring about everything.
Currently hiding from friends
Currently getting over getting dumped
@@Wiener-Fag I am sorry. Hang in there. Things will get better.
Thanks mate
@@Wiener-Fag You are welcome.
When I uploaded this, the world was very different.
I wish we could go back to those times.
Likewise my friend and I'm only 19 :(
Agreed. Going back to the 80's would be awesome but even 10-15 years ago would be nice.
Don't worry... at the rate things are going, we should be knocked all the way back to the stone age before too long.
Nukes, viruses, AI ? What's your guess?
RIP Harold Reid. Say hello to Lew, Johnny and June. And Luther too.
Wow!!!! Hadn't heard this until you posted it. RIP Harold.
Who was Luther that was named in the We Got Paid by Cash song?
And Carl Perkins too, he was a member of the Tennessee Three too. He played Second Guitar, and briefly Lead after Luther died.
Yes, rest in peace Johnny, June, Luther, Marshall, Harold, Lew, Anita, Helen, Mother Maybelle, and Carl.
sad to read this. I loved his voice.
I'm 20 years old and just heard this on the radio yesterday and it caught my ear. This is the kind of music that should always be on the radio. Very good stuff.
I first heard it back in 1999 when I was about 18. David Kersh recorded it in the 1990's. He did a pretty good job, it's just more upbeat than the original. 🙂
I meant that Eric Heatherly sang it, not David Kersh! Lol! David Kersh did Hello Walls. 😉
Young man, If you only knew...........
A lot of very good music in the 60s and 70s.
Or what ever that Moose name was
Great song, with some of the best lyrics ever written imo. "Smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo" - a line that will never be forgotten.
Yeah easily amused tv and smokes all some need.
Perfect song for staying at home and social distancing
Perfect song reminds me of Dylan and Eric
Especially with Trump as your POTUS 🙏🏼 lucky you
You can keep your "New normal" leave a great song out of it. SMH
@@kylelynch2172 Holy shit..I thought the same thing..-.-
@@floramedve5329 really?
I hope everyone is doing well during these times.
Folks, stay safe and thank you all for the positive comments here.
Half a century later and this song is still awesome.
Isn't it interesting that one of the things that CZcams, ubiquitous entertainment nexus of the early 21st century, does really well is make it lightyears easier than it used to be for this generation to discover and enjoy the greatest elements of culture from their parents' and grandparents' generations, things they otherwise may have ridiculed and rejected just because it's "old"?
LOVE this song, the other night I blasted this shit all over Downtown LA & Hollywood with the T-Tops out, them muh fuggers couldn't believe me,.. SUCKERS!!!....Statler Brothers FOREVER!!!
I just read where Harold Reid passed away last night at age 80. This just breaks my heart.( I'm a die hard Statler Brothers fan.) I began listening to them in the early 70's when I was only 15 or 16 years old. I just, finally purchased their farewell concert CD and DVD. Fly high Harold, you will be missed by many!
A great song by a legendary group! Congrats to the Statler Brothers for being elected into the Country Music Hall of Fame! They truly deserve the honor!
Godspeed Harold Reid. Thank you so much for bringing joy in my life. Rest in Peace. 4/25/2020
Услышал эту песню в фильме Тарантино, у него офигенный музыкальный вкус
To note, Lew DeWitt (shown with the guitar), suffered from Crohn's Disease for years; but despite going through a lot of pain, he always put a smile on his face to perform and entertain. His life was just like this song.
Harold Reid has just passed away at the age of 80. He was always my favorite.
Absolutely timeless and classic
1965! Their breakthrough hit! How young they look ( slim, for Harold!). Long before Lew fell ill with Crones disease! Of course, I was only 16 but I took an instant liking for their harmony!
The Statler Brothers' harmonies were sublime. What a great song.
I wish i was here for this era of music so much
Thank you to everyone who has liked & replied to this video. Sure, there's some disagreements here but the constant level of maturity & not resorting to the childish antics usually found in most comments sections of videos on YT is a breath of fresh air.
Once again, thank you all for just appreciating this video.
9 years ago oo
this has been one of the greatest tunes of my 60+ year memory. I not only remember Captain Kangeroo, I also remember countin" flowers on the wallpaper in my aunt"s living room.
Me too isn't that funny 👏🏼😅🤣😂🤭
Those of us who got to grow up sharing these songs and shows with family band friends are unbelievably lucky. I miss programs like these. So much has been lost..
Being much too young to know if these bands looking back ok them and the culture back then seems people were more happy. Their eyes had light and they looked healthy
@@TheReaper0101 I know this comment is 3 years old but I keep seeing people posting things like this and feel the need to reply.
People most certainly were not "happier" back then, it's just that creating media and disseminating it took a tremendous amount of effort. Some people had mild success with independent content, but mass distribution was heavily controlled by network executives. You can be sure that all of the content they pushed out was packaged in a very specific way.
Nowadays any person of any age and any demographic can roll out of bed and make and post any type of media/discussion they want at the push of a button/touchscreen. You get to see raw parts of humanity instead of what an executive thinks is most profitable.
That being said, social media platforms and their algorithms nowadays are definitely trying to push us back towards a system where a few people in control get to decide what everyone sees, but it's not nearly the same as it was 60 years ago.
AT 82 I recall so well that this song was my intro to these fabulous entertainers!!! Love em still!!
I can't believe I feel so sad over Harold's passing, like someone in my family. I loved his humor, his looks, his deep, deep bass--I wait for the Kang....before the others come in with Kaangaroo. The very best of all of the groups ever to come on the country scene, or any other genre for that matter. Their harmony was so well done, a perfect balance of all of the parts. They were a class act, always nice and well-spoken. Truly, they were America's poets. And they never let their fame and money go to their heads. I just feel profoundly saddened that their era has passed. The world discovered them in the 60s; I discovered them in 2019 and can't get enough of them! I wasn't there when Lew passed but Jimmy has been a very talented replacement, a beautiful voice and skilled string player. He is the best of the best they could have found--and they deserved the best.
Lester p Moran and his Cadillac cowboys if I'm not mistaking it's been a while
The Statler brothers are class act all the way, good appearance well spoken and a great example for the young people.............................................
They also didn't have a choice at that point in time.
Lol.
Always did like this song. Sad to hear about the bass singer passing. RIP
More talent in 2 minutes than 99% of the garbage today!!! Smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo....LOVE IT
R.I.P Harold... thanks for the memories... you will be missed
I love this song too, I have loved it for about 60 years! I remember when it first hit! That poor guy playing solitaire till dawn with a deck of 51! Good luck with that one hoss!
Had the 45 of this. Great song and easy to sing along!
I absolutely get where the song is coming from in its original sense but I am a person that really enjoys being alone so I relate to the lyrics in the more upbeat way like the song is sung. I quite enjoy watching life go by now that I've reached 71. That's the beauty of great song lyrics, they can mean different things to different people in different times
Well said. I know I'm getting old because I remember watching Captain Kangaroo, sometimes on our spare black and white TV.
Rest in Peace Harold Reid. Statlers had the best harmonies.
I remember this song because of the mention of Captain Kangaroo.
Whatever happened to Mr. Moose,Mr Rabbit and Mr Greenjeans? Fond memories. 😀🦋🌈 RIP Harold 🙏❤🌹
This Country Group Hit the Top 40 on 11/13/65, Peaked at No. 4, On the Chart 13 Weeks!
RIP Harold Reid, and Thank you for the music...
Reminds me of my dad who passed away on 3/4/21 he was a musician and played many different instruments. We used to sing this together all of the time. He was only 64.
I was fortunate enough to see the Statler Brothers give a performance near Chicago in the summer of 1990.
That's awesome to hear Mr. Seaton
Shared on my Facebook by Gene Watson and I shared it to my Facebook music group in honor of Don Reid's birthday today!
I remember this from years gone by, (I'm now 69).
I was a young teenage girl when I heard this about 50 years ago (maybe a little longer). I was really into folk music and the DJ on the radio called it a folk tune back then. I loved it then and still do...thanks for posting...brings back nice memories and look how young the Statlers are.
This song crossed over into the pop charts in 1965 in the middle the British Invasion.
I STILL LOVE THIS GREAT SONG! I CAN RELATE TO IT! THANKS FOR SHARING! R.K. 3/17/2021.
Music is pretty much my life. I play it, I produce it, I've lived for it for quite some time now. While I've never been a big fan of this particular genre, if someone were to ask me what is the greatest lyrical masterpiece ever set to song, in about the amount of time it takes a batter to decide to swing at a fastball, my answer would be this song.... and I'd sit on Townes Van Zandt''s shoulders, look Bob Dylan in the eye and tell him to his face.
In my opinion, lyrically, best song ever.
The BEST country group of all time
Thank you Harold. Rest in peace. Miss you and your deep voice on "Captain KANGaroo". Then the decades of comedy. Your "arrest" in Canada on bullshit tariff charges. Then there was the JD Sumner roast. You were the star of them all. Thank you so much for a life well spent!
Wow. Amazing performance clip. Thank you.
Harold Reid, bass singer and head lunatic, of the Statlers, passed away yesterday from kidney failure. My aunt passed away a few weeks ago from kidney failure and she was in her late 70s. Close to home for me. But, we won't see his kind again, at least, not in my lifetime. RIP, sir. Well done.
Head lunatic 🤣 I would agree
Rest In Peace, Harold Reid, gone but not forgotten.
Reminds me of my weekly trips with my Grandpa as a kid in his 53 international feed truck to the feed store.
I have always liked this song since I was a little kid back in the sixties. When I grew up I figured out what the song was about and the humour the writers used.
The bass voice is so fantastic. Pity we hear so little of it.
I remember this as a kid. Its lyrics are extremely clever. Yes, it appears he has run into his 'ex-GF' who borke up with him, and yes he's getting over it. Counting flowers on the wall, etc. shows he's working through it, with some dark humour, but is confident he'll get over it. Reminds me of the matter-of-fact acceptance of fate that makes the song 'King of the Road' similar in attitude. Life throws you curves...but you can get by, given time. And what a video! Talent, talent, talent.
I heard this song and couldn't stop laughing. This describes so many people I know.
Sad but true
When I was 11 or 12, my best friend Rob Herrman gave me this single for my birthday. We played it a couple of times on the stereo and were in my room visiting. I had put the record on the bed and my younger brother came into the room, sat on the record and broke it right in half.
The Irony is this song about crippling depression HELPED me get through my own Dark Night of the Soul. It always puts a smile on my face. (I grew up watching Captain Kangaroo, and listening to The Statler Brothers!) 😁
Rarely, can you point to a song that is an ultimate representation of an emotion or the ultimate summary of a point in your life. However, that is what this song is for depression.
Enjoyed this song since I was twelve seeing pulp fiction in theaters
Saw them when I was just a kid in the early 70's. Wow.
Great song and a fantastic band! Thanks a lot, Tarantino! This song and Do you know you are..., More than a name..., Class of 57, Do you remember... are my top favorites. Greetings from Romania! :)
What a classic by The Statlers. They do look so young and are very good looking. I love all of the songs that The Statlers have recorded through the years. They have always looked so classy and professional which isn't very common these days sad to say. We saw them in a great show here in our city about 1981 and their fans truly adored them. We do miss Lou so much. Thank you for posting this winner. - Paula
heard this on pulp fiction, loved it ever since
Eu também
I bet they had no idea this song would be such a hit. Great song. I dont see it as depressing, but a person trying to occupy their mind during personal turmoil.
I'm from Russia, I've loved the Statlers' music for 4-5 years.
My Dad would play this song for us.
got to see them when they were very new. with Johnny Cash and June Carter at the Turf ballrom Austin Minnesota. about 1964
You gotta luv it. This is song that will live as long as people enjoy creativity
RIP Harold Reid! My grandparents probably were in line to welcome you. They taught me to appreciate your type of music.
My local radio station plays this song atleast once every two hours. Right behind Queen of the Silver Dollar and just before All the Gold In California. Old memories
One year at Christmas, one of my classes exchanged names for gift giving. The guy that got my name knew how much I loved this song so he bought the 45 for me. I LOVED IT!!!
This is great stuff! I am retired and sing this all the time! Thank you!!
One of the best quarantine songs out there.
The Statler Brothers are from my home town and had Happy Birthday USA for 25 years bringing in country music stars every year like Johnny Cash and June Carter, just name about any top star then and they came. They were discovered by Johnny Cash and toured with him and then had the highest rated variety show on CMT for 7 years when they struck out on their own. They are all fine men and harmonize beautifully. I've seen one at the Food Lion many times and worked the hot dog stand with another one at a high school football game. Another always came to our basketball games. Anybody who doesn't like their singing is just plain sick in the head and I'm not even a big country music fan, I prefer rock so put that in your pipe and smoke it !!
The good old songs!!
Those were the days🌟
Love this Song ,brings me back home!
I started singing this song today as I was thinking about how bored I am sitting here nine mos pregnant. I love this song!
Gosh, it's crazy to think that that baby is old enough now that I could have a semi-ordinary conversation with them and I can just _watch_ this video on CZcams and read your comment...
Nine months pregnant. "Countin' flowers on the wall". Can't play solitaire cause my belly won't allow my arms to reach the table. Can't smoke. Capt. Kangaroo's in a nursing home.
That baby must be half grown now. Give him/her my best. Happy you survived those last 3 weeks.
i remember listening to this when i was a kid. i havent heard it in ever that is the first time ive heard it in years. and it still sounds great!
Yes it is
The song that was a beginning of an era. RIP Harold and Lew. True fans will remember u all forever
Grew up listening to Dad singing Statler Brothers among other classics. Loved these guys.
I love everything about this song. Harmonies,; men in suits...clapping...meaningful lyrics...no idea about any, presumably, recent, negative, connotations. It's just a fabulous song....and I assume, 'Captain Kangaroo' is a real programme...I'm sure I could go online and find out, but, after 50 years of listening to this, I prefer not to know...
yes it is
Captain Kangaroo was a children's show that was on TV early in the morning. "Playing solitaire till dawn...Watching Captain Kangaroo" means that the man can't sleep because his girlfriend broke up with him. So he stays up all night "counting flowers on the wall[paper]."
Probably the greatest country song ever!
LOVE THIS SONG RIP HAROLD
I was born in 1967 ....This is the first song I remember hearing ...Coming from a old stand up tube radio in my parents basement...
I first heard this song in the 1960's on a children's dance show called the Chuck McCan Dance Hour on Metromedia TV NYC. I enjoyed the uptempo rhythm of the song. The big charm was the mention of Captain Kangaroo. Now it is a song about someone withdrawing into a deep depression. At least he had people checking up on him.
I love this song. Johnny Cash asked this group to join his road trip along with the Carter family and Carl Perkins.
I didn't own many 45 RPM records when I was a teen but this was one of them.
This reminds me of a few days before my wedding. I listened to this song all the time and thought maybe I should just spend my time smoking cigarettes and playing cards, maybe watch some cartoons and not get married. That was the best time when I was single and free.
I can't understand why anyone would hate this song this is my favorite statler brothers song
Lyrics:
I keep hearin' you're concerned about my happiness
But all that thought you're givin' me is conscience I guess
If I was walkin' in your shoes, I wouldn't worry none
While you 'n' your friends are worried about me I'm havin' lots of fun
Countin' flowers on the wall
That don't bother me at all
Playin' solitaire till dawn with a deck of fifty-one
Smokin' cigarettes and watchin' Captain Kangaroo
Now don't tell me I've nothin' to do
Last night I dressed in tails, pretended I was on the town
As long as I can dream it's hard to slow this swinger down
So please don't give a thought to me, I'm really doin' fine
You can always find me here, I'm havin' quite a time
Countin' flowers on the wall
That don't bother me at all
Playin' solitaire till dawn with a deck of fifty-one
Smokin' cigarettes and watchin' Captain Kangaroo
Now don't tell me I've nothin' to do
It's good to see you, I must go, I know I look a fright
Anyway my eyes are not accustomed to this light
And my shoes are not accustomed to this hard concrete
So I must go back to my room and make my day complete
Countin' flowers on the wall
That don't bother me at all
Playin' solitaire till dawn with a deck of fifty-one
Smokin' cigarettes and watchin' Captain Kangaroo
Now don't tell me I've nothin' to do
Don't tell me I've nothin' to do
I sung it thanks
That's so cool that you did that. Now I can write it out and have a copy without having to go piecemeal thru the song the long way!! Thanks, G!!!
TY Soo Much For The Lyrics My Oldest Brother Loved This Song, I Was A Teenager When My Brother Passed Away 😔 Love You Brother 💙💕
I love these lyrics - cracks me up every time!!
I love discovering "new to me" songs...this one's a hoot!
I can listen to this song Flowers on the Wall from The Statler brothers all day and not get tired of it. Love this song I was in fact putting down Linolium and forgot about it as I listened on and on over and over again.
They have amazing voices.
My step father shot himself in 1970 I was 10. This song was played on the radio the day after his death. So now you know my age, I still cry.
Mate. I'm going to have a beer right now for him. And you.
All the best for the future mate and stay strong!
Me and my grandmother used to listen to this song all the time. I love you so much grandma rest in peace.
I remember when this song first came out. It hit the top 10 on the pop charts. There are some songs that are not really of any genre, but instead cover many musical areas, and this song is definitely one of them. First Statler Brothers song I ever heard, and I've been in love with their music ever since. Thank you for sharing the video with us, teqtonyk. Much appreciated.
RIP Harold Reid, you will be missed. Sending prayers to his family and friends. 💜
Forgot how good these guys were! Always liked this "mental fortitude in the face of can't win" song, too!
Great song! Greetings from Russia))
P.S. Thanks to Quentin Tarantino and his "Pulp fiction" for knowledge about this song)
