  • A younger me, experienced a flight in a glider, called a Høgslund / Traugott-Olsen 2G "OY-AVX". The design is from 1946 and is made of wood and canvas, with a span of 12,5 meters, and has a L/D of 13 at 64 km/h. The stall and max. airspeed is between 48-125 km/h
History of this particular model (from DaSK):
-"The two-seater primary was constructed by Høgslund and Traugott-Olsen for homebuilding. This plane was built by Odense Svæveflyveklub in 1950 and was registrated June 17th 1950 as OY-121. Odense Svæveflyveklub used the glider as a elementary training glider untill September 22th. 1955, when Vejle Svæveflyveklub bought the plane. June 17th. 1957 it was reregistrated as OY-AVX. April 22th. In 1959 it was handed over to the former Holstebro-Struer Svæveflyveklub (now Holstebro Svæveflyveklub), and until appr. 1965 it was used very much. The C/A was deposited the 17th. March. The 27th. June 1979 it was deleted from the Regisrer. The local Club handed over the glider to Robert Nielsen, Borbjerg. He stored the glider for many years. He again handed the glider over to DaSK, and it is now the most popular glider in all Rallies."

@@TheCrabbers yep, 208 (North Leeds) sqn. four Chipmunk flights, . Including one that had an engine failure. Nothing catastrophic (failed oil pump) and we were still in the circuit at Binbrook so landed normally. The others were Finningley, Brawdy and Kinloss. Now training up to be an ATC Civvie instructor..
Had quite a few training flights after the Cadets in various Cessnas and a couple of Pipers.
      You an ex ATC too?

Look up winch launching. Essentially, the glider has a hook just in front of the balance point fore and aft on the glider, there is about 2,000 feet of cable that gets pulled in on a big reel powered by a gas engine. The other end of the cable is attached to the glider and the glider "kites" up the line as it is pulled in. When he gets to the top he pulls the release and the line falls away. It works well and is quieter and cheaper than operating a towplane.
czcams.com/video/o2PMANmrF04/video.html shows how it is normally done. The winch part starts at 2:35
