  • In this video, we show you how we disassembled the steering clutch components on this 1959 JOHN DEERE 440 CRAWLER.
It was a big job that involved some tricky lifting! Tune in to see how we got this beast apart!

My son in law has a 440 crawler and currently is behind my house and we can't get to the house. The right track will not engage so he can't go straight or turn obviously. Desperate to get it going atleast out of woods to where it can be worked on! Not to familiar with working on it but ANY help would be much appreciated! Thank you

You could remove the inspection/adjustment plate (4 bolts on right side) and see if the clutch is being engaged (adjustment of screw too tight); also, check to make sure the brake band on the right side isn’t being applied. Otherwise, it could be a broken part in the steering clutch, or the steering clutches are worn out. You might have to get another machine out there to tow the crawler back to where you can work on it…good luck! Thanks for watching!

I restored an MC and now have a 57 420c. Those thin tubes are kind of a nightmare, they can get bent super easy removing and installing the final drive.

Don’t forget to put sleeve retainer on it when installing.

How do you add transmission fluid to it? Thanks.

Hi Tony, great question! I can send you a picture of that page from the owners manual showing where to do that. Can’t seem to plop that photo in CZcams comments here…I posted it on our CZcams homepage under the “community” button…or you can send us an email & I’ll email that back to you: thepopplepeople@gmail.com

Theres a drain hole on the bottom of the trans and a fill hole up near the top.
