    Have you ever used an adhesive to affix the foam board?

      Thank you, we use masonry fasteners when possible but spray foam can be used to hold foam board but it may take a while to stick.

    Thoughts on 6-mil VB on dirt floor with edges 12-14" up the walls, adding rigid insulation (1/2" R2.5) on the exterior walls (all seams taped) then framing at 16" OC and installing Rockwool R14 bats and VB to finish. Good idea, overkill or what? Century home and furnace is in the dirt/rock wall crawlspace (uninsulated).
    Laying a subfloor as well (3'x3' palettes I picked up from local factory) on top of the VB.
    End goal is storage for totes, etc and a better area for the furnace to be running in.

      @CrawlSpaceNinja  Před 11 měsíci

      It sounds like a good plan, just make sure you are controlling/monitoring humidity/moisture. If I had to pick something to leave off or wait and see and possibly do later it would be firring walls and batt insulation. Hope that helps and thanks for watching.

      @@CrawlSpaceNinja thanks for the tip. I have humistat in there now and humidity is a disgusting 84%.
      Will finish up framing the walls and sealing off remaining areas and monitor the moisture after that.
      Already have plans in mind to run electrical and put in an outlet to have de-humidier down there.
      Quick question on that -- would it be ok to have hose from de-humidifier vent out to the ground under the vapour barrier (properly taped of course).

    I see you’ve done a lot of block walls but what about brick? Will the hilti gun work on brick without breaking them?

    • @CrawlSpaceNinja
      @CrawlSpaceNinja  Před rokem +1

      Yes, all masonry guns run the risk of damaging brick/stone. We use a spray foam adhesive when dealing with brick. It is a major pain because you must wait for it to cure. Then we attach vapor barrier to the foamboard with Christmas tree fasteners. Hope that helps. It may be possible to drill in a tapcon into a mortar joint but I'd test that option.

    If I currently have 1" rigid foam insulation panels on my crawlspace walls, and I want to increase the R-value, should I remove the existing foam and replace with thicker or should I just go over the face?

    • @CrawlSpaceNinja
      @CrawlSpaceNinja  Před rokem

      You should be able to attach new board over old, maybe with a thicker tapcon/masonry screw. As long as old board is in good shape.

    Does insulation go under or over the vapor barrier on walls

    • @CrawlSpaceNinja
      @CrawlSpaceNinja  Před měsícem

      We usually put insulation under the vapor barrier so that the vapor barrier is not compromised. Technically you can put it over the vapor barrier too if needed just keep in mind that whenever you apply your mechanical fastener through the vapor barrier it could create a place for moisture to escape.

  • @baxt1412
    @baxt1412 Před 8 měsíci

    I’ve seen both and now I’m confused to which it should be. Should I put my vapor barrier on top of my rigid insulation on the walls or behind?? I’d be kind of concerned of putting the rigid insulation behind the vapor barrier because I don’t want soil vapor to have access to the rigid insulation and eventually keep wicking up through even though it’s high density XPS and so won’t absorb much I just don’t want it to be able to absorb any

    • @CrawlSpaceNinja
      @CrawlSpaceNinja  Před 8 měsíci +1

      We put the foamboard behind plastic so we don't pierce the plastic with foamboard fasteners and create a potential leak onto the plastic if the wall is extremely damp, but the foamboard can go over plastic as well. It is a preference and there are pros and cons to both. Thanks for watching and I hope that helps. You can also do insulbarrier which solves the issue because it hangs like plastic but also insulates. diy.crawlspaceninja.com/insulation-vapor-barrier/

    • @baxt1412
      @baxt1412 Před 8 měsíci

      @@CrawlSpaceNinja I did buy your vapor barrier. Could I just use your double sided tape between the rigid insulation and the vapor barrier if I put the vapor barrier over the top of the insulation? And then I still have the remainder height of the insulation to apply mechanical fasteners.
      Or do you know any standard caulkings are compatible with your vapor barrier? Might be easier to say if it’s specifically incompatible with any solvents so I can avoid those caulkings/adhesives

    • @CrawlSpaceNinja
      @CrawlSpaceNinja  Před 8 měsíci

      @@baxt1412 thank you for getting our vapor barrier. When we apply plastic to foamboard or spray foam, the Christmas tree fasteners can be used if you want a mechanical versus adhesive attachment. I am not a fan of adhesive only when attaching plastic to insulation or foundation walls. You can of course try the butyl but I am thinking it will fail over time.

    • @CrawlSpaceNinja
      @CrawlSpaceNinja  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Foamboard is a thermal barrier. The type we use has all the stuff needed by code so it can be installed and exposed if needed. Not all foamboards have that.
