  • General end of the summer update on our building progress. We have a fully enclosed house going into fall. All windows and doors are installed, insulation is done and we are working on sheet rock.

    This is a fantastic set of videos. I just got back from the fall 2021 monolithic building workshop and all of these videos have been super helpful.

      Glad they help! When we were starting out there was nothing out there.

    Looks great it's coming along. Noticed that the cavern echo is almost gone. Getting cozy now 😀

      The rock wool in the interior walls made a huge difference and the sheet rock is also helping. I do think the kitchen/greatroom domes will always have some but furniture will also help. The master wing where we are storing stuff right now should get better once we start walls just like the other wing. The weirdest place to stand (sound wise) is in the very center of each dome. We accidently designed our bedroom wings so that the centers are where the short hallways are. Having those spots in a hallway makes a huge difference in getting rid of echo.

    Amazing, love seeing these videos. I'm still working on the super long process of finding a contractor. I'm nowhere near as handy as the two of you are :) The way things are going, I may have to learn!

      We are just winging a lot of this build. 😂 We always planned to do the interior work ourselves (we have experience with that stuff) but there are many parts we initially were going to have contractors do. We quickly found out that contractors have no interest in doing something different. They just want to bang things out quickly and move on. There is nothing in this build that is simple due to the curves. We watch a lot of CZcams videos and then just give it a shot. We mess up sometimes but we thankfully have friends that are contractors so we can ask questions. Our building department has been really great too as far as advice etc. What I have learned is to not be afraid to try. It may take a lot longer than a contractor but it can be done. There is so much info online about how to do construction. They key is to work with your local building officials and be prepared for your entire life to revolve around building for years. Goodluck with your build!!

    this is great! My husband and I have been saving up to build our own dome home! We are thinking of using aircrete! Have you thought about creating a cost video? Show casing the cost of building and labor etc?
    Would you have any advice!! Thank you!

      A cost video would be difficult. The cost is very location specific. Labor wise we have done almost all of it ourselves so I don’t know what it would cost. I can tell you that dealing with all the curves is very time consuming. Everything you cut to fit inside a curved structure is a multifaceted cut. Every stud and every piece of Sheetrock has to be cut to the curves. I have said it in a bunch of places but we did hire a company to do the shell for us and it came to $72 per sq foot. That was only for the airform, ring beam and dome structure. This doesn’t include the floor, site work, foundation, window walls or anything interior or related to utilities. I have heard that it is less if you do a single dome (in the mid $60’s per sq ft) but I don’t actually know that for certain. It is possible that costs have changed as well. We have seen a universal rise in the cost of materials. I wish I could give more advice about cost but it really depends. We also went with a company with a long track record of building theses houses. There were less expensive builders but we were investing too much in this to have it go badly with an inexperienced builder.

    Nice. We just got plans sent for engineer's stamp and then off to county. Hopefully the shell goes up in spring sometime.

      @@doclees11 HAHA, yeah...there is that. I am not sure we will ever be done! But I just hope you have an easier time jumping though all the hoops required to be able to start. Ours was quite the roller coaster with tons of delays and hidden expenses. :D

    • @doclees11
      @doclees11 Před 2 lety +1

      @@dometastic oh the delays started before even really getting started. After getting our FL panhandle lot with enough Zone X (non flood zone) where realtor and locals said no problem, you can build on a slab, Flood Zoning of county said I needed a particular wave action line noted on my plot survey. Surveyor never heard of this. Realtor never heard of it. No such line has ever been surveyed for that area by FEMA. Took close to a year, and a new person in Flood zoning, to clear this up. Got to love unprofessional state workers.

    What about roof? Is that Concrette not leaking?

    • @dometastic
      @dometastic  Před 2 lety

      The interior is concrete. The exterior is single ply PVC roofing material (the airform that is inflated to construct the house) that is typically used in commercial roofing on flat roofs. At some point we will do a chain shell on the exterior. Then the exterior will also be concrete but that PVC roof membrane will always be there preventing water from getting inside. The membrane has a 20 yr warranty as is so we have some time to save up for the concrete exterior shell.

    I've taken the Monolithic Dome class in Italy TX with David South. I have questions if you have some time to discuss. How can I reach you?

      If you have Instagram or Facebook you can reach me with a dm. We can try to help answer questions. Instagram name is dometasticdome and Facebook is dometastic. I update the Instagram account all the time. I have gotten behind on our blog and here on CZcams because they take so much more time and effort to post things.
