Denise… I read the post in question and was very troubled over it. What so many forget is that children raised in poverty have one miraculous gift in common- imagination. As someone raised poor, I immersed myself in books. Mythical creatures expanded my joy. My love of those creatures did not impede my willingness to embrace the love of Christ. Even now as an adult, I have a dragon picture on my wall. I appreciate your videos and have shared your joy in finding that perfect gift for a child. You bless me. Marlene

Denise, first I want to say that I believe Jesus is well pleased with how you chose to hold your flesh under and address yet another criticism with kindness and grace. You are a true lady!!!!!! A woman who loves Jesus and all these children who need him. It hurts my heart that you have been targeted again. Because of your kind words to me after I endured some of that same criticism I chose not to give up packing shoeboxes. I was so close to throwing in the towel. You held my hand (in spirit) and prayed me through that rough patch. You are a wonderful example of what the bible instructs us to do. Walk in Love and forgive others. . I’m in that FB group and I read the post in question. I think if you feel led to pack something, as long as it is not prohibited by OCC, then God has a plan for those items! If people have a personal opinion about certain types of items, they are certainly welcome to choose not to pack them. But to make other packers feel bad for the items they choose is not okay. I LOVE your boxes, and I know they will bless so many children! ❤

Well said! Denise you are the best at articulating your messages! You pack the most beautiful boxes filled with so much obvious love, it is hard to understand why anyone, especially someone claiming to be a Christian, would make any derogatory comments about anything you would pack. I know it is hurtful and discouraging to continually hear those things out of the same handful of people, especially when you do so much for this ministry.
Oh my goodness, everything in this box is adorable! I absolutely love the plush jellyfish. I didn’t even see that one at Walmart during Valentine’s Day. I think that might be my favorite item in the box, but the crybaby mermaid is so sweet and I know will be loved immensely and carried around everywhere this little girl will go. The pop-it is super cute and will be loads of fun to play with and aggravate her parents 😂. Precious little book and a very smart little outfit. I really love it all, as will the little one who receives. 🌊🧜♀️🪼

It’s silly really, that the same issue comes up again and only discourages packers in a hurtful and condescending manner. I am grateful for our community of packers that only want to encourage and inspire. I will continue to do that and support others as well. Thank you friend! I love mermaids but I think jelly fish may be my second favorite sea creature (turtles are my first fave lol). That jelly fish stuffy is the cutest. Thanks for the shout out. Washi tape often comes in handy in my shoebox packing lol. BTW, we are on same wave length (sort of)😁. I just packed 3 boxes for 2-4 girls with under the sea themes. Sharing one on Sunday!

Ok I usually do a lot of soul searching NOT to engage people who have ugly things to say or are critical of other packers. The EXACT same people who claim to be Christians yet they go on and on about how cheaply people pack while they have EVERYTHING donated to them. Idk about you but almost everything I pack comes from my own money. I’m truly disgusted that you even had to mention this but you did an amazing job delivering the message. Encouraging people not knocking them down is the purpose of videos. Anyway on to the box. The Cry Baby doll is so adorable!! Both octopuses are perfect! The book is so colorful, actually the whole box is colorful! The shirt and jeggings are super cool and tomorrow, I’ll try to wake up mermazing too🤣. Great idea laminating the cards, they will last forever. TFS this beautiful box and hey, btw, gorgeous floors!!! Happy Mother’s Day my friend, you’re a beautiful soul and a wonderful packer!!

He also says, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" Some people seem to have forgotten that one. You my friend are so encouraging and I am thankful for you! I am a member of the FB group you referenced. I read the post and multitude of comments about not only unicorns but many other things people don’t like to pack or that they think are inappropriate. Everything said (in my opinion) were personal opinions…period. I think we all use personal preferences when we’re shopping for our shoeboxes along with God’s direction, but we should not use those preferences to make others feel bad about what they are packing.
Your videos are very inspiring to so many of us and full of great ideas! Please keep doing what you’re doing! ❤

I pack over 400 boxes per year. When I first started I almost quit because of the opinions of one group. I am glad that God led me away from them!!

Oh, my goodness! I am so saddened-and also angered- by this attack. I came across the FB post in question-sans those responses which were removed- and found the arguments to be largely illogical and irrelevant. This prideful legalism is so destructive. Thank you for this much needed and encouraging response, delivered with more tact and restraint than I could have mustered. Keep up the great work! Your boxes are inspiring!
Thank you Cheryl! Yes, any comment that was not in agreement with the post was removed. Why even post anything if that’s what they are going to do? Right? It’s ok to have a different opinion but it’s not ok to judge others as wrong because they believe differently. Oh trust me… it took restraint. That was the kinder version. Legalism is destructive indeed. I will pray for everyone. 🙏🏻
I'm so sorry you had to address this issue but you did it beautifully. Thanks for sharing your very inspiring boxes. I like the mermaid theme. I was able to get a couple of the jelly fish at Walmart too. To be honest the first one was for me because I love jelly fish (and stingrays). Then I got three of the Harimazing doll sets many of us bought so now I'm making filler packs with the Hairmazing mermaids and the jelly fish.
Those filler packs sound amazing!!!! How fun! I love jelly fish too… as long as they are not next to me in the water!😅 Thank you Maureen. Yes, I felt compelled to not only stand up for myself but help the occ community get clarity through the chaos. I hope it will help others. 🥰

Very well said with such eloquence and grace. I've seen this behavior as well and it is extremely disappointing. Thank you for addressing it. As you said, OCC packed unicorn bracelets in their online boxes last year. I will trust that they know what's ok to send. It's fine to have personal preferences but it's not ok to make other's feel like they are "unchristian" for sending the same items that OCC themselves send.
You can tell that you have such heart for this ministry. Thank you for using your gifts to help and encourage other packers. It must take a lot of work unpacking and repacking boxes as well as editing and posting videos. Thank you for all that you do! You have been so helpful and encouraging in my packing journey. I can't tell you how many ideas I've gotten from your videos!
I love this adorably mermazing box!! Her mermaid doll and jellyfish plush are adorable!! I also love her sequin purse and kaleidoscope. I got some of the shark fidgets from Target but I think I'm going to have to go back and get some of the jellyfish!! Too cute! 🧜♀️🐙🐠🌊🐚

Like you said, it’s ok to have preferences but making others feel bad about theirs is not ok and not helpful for the ministry as a whole. Pretty unchristian for sure. Oh Denise thank you so much for your encouragement through this sad situation. The group in question has removed me as well even though I did not make a comment that I can recall on the statement they put out. Not sure if it's because I just started my own fb page or because of this situation but it is sad when people do this. It is okay to have a difference of opinion but to discourage others in a ministry that is supposed to uplift and share the word of God is unfortunate.
You have such a kind heart and I love all the boxes you do! You inspire me and encourage me with your heart for this ministry and the kindness you share ❤️ you always have such wonderful ideas to share and I wholeheartedly agree with you that we need to just follow OCC guidelines and trust God to help us know what to send.

I'm in that FB group & many more. I knew right away you were the target as I had recently watched your unicorn unboxing. I'm amazed at how often folks ask the groups "Can we pack this or that" and then the opinions start. Often I comment if its not on the Do Not Pack List from OCC it is ok to pack. The best place to ask is Samaritans Purse for the official answer. Your opening statement was spoken with such grace & kindness. I don't pack themes as much of my shopping & packing is for church boxes and we need bulk. I did want 25 My Little Ponies & found them at Dollar Tree but they were unicorns. I counted out what they had & it was exactly 25. I thought that providential. God provides what we need when we prayerfully ask. Keep sharing your joy! You sure inspire me.

Thank you for making this video! I am in that facebook group and read the post. I didn't agree with it and thought that it was a personal opinion. But I still felt discouraged about my 2 Unicorn boxes that I have been putting together, even though I knew that those were the toys God led me to pack! I love how encouraging your channel is and you have been my biggest inspiration in making my own OCC channel! Susan, keep packing those beautiful boxes! I have packed many unicorn-themed boxes and have some lovely items even now that I am in the process of packing. When my granddaughters come over to help pack, they like to pack those unicorn items. They are well-loved and popular!

Oh boy. Well said Denise about emphasizing the official guidelines vs personal opinion. I think food related items was another thing that the other channel mentioned before, but when I asked OCC (Canada) about it, they had no issues with it. Because of the mythology research that I’ve done there are some things I prefer not to include in my boxes, BUT if those particular items happen to come my way I won’t object to it. I find the thing that helps me the most is asking God to show me what will honour Him before I go shopping.
Now in regards to your box: those jellyfish toys are so cute! And I like the mermaid doll you were able to include too 😊

Well said!! Thank you for making a statement about this. When I’ve watched the one’s that are against certain items (that are perfectly fine for boxes) the first thing I think of is pride and legalism.
Those two things make others feel bad and less than.
When I watch your videos, I feel encouraged and excited to pack my own shoeboxes. Thank you so much for your enthusiasm, joy, and hard work that you put into your videos. I can see Christ’s love in all of your boxes. ❤

Hi Denise! I’m very new to your channel. I came across one of your videos a little over 2 weeks ago when my daughter and I were looking up OCC videos to learn about the process and just to watch the reactions of the children receiving their boxes. I’m very new myself to OCC but after stumbling across your video, I’ve learned so much. Your boxes are truly incredible and just how much thought & care you put into each & every item…even down to the tiniest eraser is so inspiring & contagious. I’ve watched many of your videos now & I’m hooked. I feel more knowledgeable about making sure the boxes are filled completely and even learned about fillers through you. So now I’m starting to collect so I can make some pencil packs and other filler packs as well. I just want to thank you for what you do for the kids and also serving as a model for us viewers on how to pack quality boxes with love. Please don’t let others discourage you and keep you from doing God’s work.

You are doing excellent and fabulous work! Your points are very well said and integrated.. Pure-hearted intent related to unicorns and mermaids is everything! I feel sorry for people who are so insecure that they have a need to tell others what to do and think. I have even heard some "real" Christians try to tell us that even Harry Potter is inappropriate in a Christian home. This kind of thinking insults the intelligence of children. They know what is fiction, and what is make-believe and what isn't.

Beautiful box -- thanks for sharing! I have packed some of those same items in ocean-themed boxes. I agree it's fun to be creative with theme boxes but certainly not for everyone to feel they have to do. I pack about half of my shoeboxes with a theme, and sometimes it's just a color. But other shoeboxes are just a happy hodgepodge!
Oh I love a color themed box! I do those too! Or a combination of two colors. Not all of mine are themed either especially the older kids. But I do really enjoy a theme and sometimes when I don’t even mean for it to become a theme…it ends up being one! 😂🤷🏻♀️ It’s fun getting creative for our OCC kids! Thank you for watching!

Thank you for your inspiration. I do not live anywhere near a drop off for OCC so I tried to do a mini version of the idea here where I live last Christmas. I packed 150 bags filled with a variety of items for ages 2- 16 and donated them to a local charity who helps single parents and grandparents raising grandchildren. It was so uplifting for me and the items were very much appreciated. I plan to do this again this Christmas. I love this whole idea of serving others and spreading the love of Jesus Christ. Yes, God did give us imaginations and children often need them to take them away from their worries in the world such as war, food deprivation, lack of shelter or family. I believe in packing passionately and having fun while doing it! I believe the children will feel that when they open their boxes and know Jesus loves them! I enjoy watching people pack boxes with items that I have not thought of and I trust that God has led them to do that. Like you said, OCC tells us the things that we don't need to use. Your boxes are beautiful and thank you so much for sharing them! And I really enjoy your shopping trips too! You really help me find things! I am even trying to do a few theme boxes this year. This is actually more challenging for me to organize than the non-themed ones. Would you consider doing a video on how you organize your themed boxes / items?
Thanks Annette for your thoughtful comment! I really appreciate it! I use 2.5 gallon baggies to gather items all year or more. I also keep a list of what themes I have and what I need to complete the theme i.e. a coloring book or clothing etc. I may at some point do a video but honestly it won’t look organized to anyone but me.🤣😂🤣My basement is my OCC workshop!
Just want to say a BIG thank you for your encouraging words and for all your videos I would be lost without them, I now shop all year and do as many fillers and pencil packs as I can all because of your encouraging videos. You helped me a while back when I was struggling and discouraged with a You Tube video I had watched, I should have known better but thought this person was a better Christian than me and knew better,I now know that God needs and uses what I pack for a special child of his and I continue to pack with love and passion and help from videos like yours. Denise...Some trolls are watching and looking to pounce on anyone they disagree with. What I do when I view the trolls I just use the blocking button. Referring to OCC is always the best option we have and I enjoy and often copy your ideas. God bless all of us who are sending the love of Jesus to children around the world.

Hi Denise, Thanks for yet AGAIN reinforcing OCC guidelines and sharing their official response to your questions. I cannot believe how the issue of personal opinion causes so much distress each year. However, I will admit that I watched your unicorn unboxing and had to think a bit about which box that you were referring to. The fact is that the unicorn box is one of the many fantastic boxes that you have shared on CZcams. I really liked it because of the darker skin unicorn and thus may be a more appropriate choice for a receiving child living in Africa.
This year, I am seeking to pack dolls and other toys that are representative of all cultures. A couple of years ago, I shared an email and spoke about culturally diverse unicorns. You did question what I was taking about. I thought I had made on online purchase of t-shirt with bronwn ponies - Nope! These were brown unicorns and I packed and sent that t-shirt in an OCC box. If I had another one, I would send it this year!
FYI At the end of my table is a unicorn box that I am packing for Miss 10-14 in shades of pink and purple. Of all the boxes I would like to pack, this was the one calling pack me now! 💟
Yes Fiona, here we are again dealing with personal opinions as the only correct way to pack.🤦🏻♀️ I don’t mind that they have a different opinion. I do mind that they seem to take joy in tearing down others who disagree or just remove their comments altogether. And become very judgmental of the intention of our hearts and intellect. It’s very unchristian. I believe that unicorn shirt you sent was probably the same brand! I love it also because of the diversity it represents. Your shades of pink and purple unicorn box sounds fantastic! I know it will be Fiona-tastic! You always do such a beautiful and creative job!

That was in such poor taste for this to happen. I do follow that group and this does happen. It only brings division. I totally have my own feelings on what not to send but like you said Operation Christian Child has guidelines to follow.

I love your boxes and your videos so much! Thank you for sharing this. I know the group and the post you're talking about. I got blocked from the group because I don't agree with them. I'm not religious and I'm a part of the LGBTQIA+ community. I definitely don't fit their standards. It's groups like theirs that really discourage me from packing shoeboxes. I'm still packing for this year, but keep wondering if I should stop soon. I'm very undecided.

Thank you and God bless you Denise for addressing this I honestly feel through you and many other kind, generous, loving OCC packers my Prayers have been answered...If anyone has questions or concerns about what to pack I would always encourage them to contact OCC Samaritan's purse in their Country or region...Yes, in the end we all would love for children to know about Our Lord Jesus Christ, how much that Jesus loves them, and that people packing the boxes care for them and love them as well. When I was a young girl I loved using my God-given wonderful and creative imagination and I am certain many of these beautiful children are similar as well. Denise, I truly appreciate and love your unboxings and packing these gifts 🎁

You pack awesome shoebox gifts. I always try to pack items that I would have enjoyed myself as a child. I can say that I would have been thrilled with all YOUR shoeboxes. Equally, I can understand that some objects in distant parts of the world might be irritating. But as long as OCC doesn't see a problem with this, you should continue with your work, because your shoeboxes are, as I've just written, awesome. 🙂 Greetings from Germany btw

As I’ve stated in another post in response to this issue... while there are things I personally choose not to pack per my convictions, I never refuse donated items for shoeboxes. I know the person who donated it did so from their heart and care for a child receiving that gift. As the team leader at my church I try to graciously accept all donations unless it does violate OCC allowed items, ie. toothpaste, liquid items etc. I know the processing centers look out for unacceptable items and I trust they do their best with this. God knows just which child will receive what item and, even though I myself might not have chosen an item, God put it on the heart of someone else to do so. Who am I to judge their gift? Of course I don’t have an issue myself with unicorns so no problem here on that. But just believe we all need a little more grace and compassion for each other as we all hold our own convictions and opinions. Who’s to say I’m right and you’re wrong? God knows everyone’s heart, I don’t.

Jesús decía "dejad que los niños se acerquen a mi y no se lo impidais porque de ellos es el Reino de los cielos" Creo que es de todos los que tienen una mirada pura, limpia de prejuicios y llena de amor. A veces las personas no son conscientes de cómo la fantasía puede salvar a un niño del caos. Yo lo experimenté de pequeña. ¿Acaso no puede, por ejemplo un escritor, amar a Jesús y crear mundos fantásticos? Claro que si, mientras no sea ofensivo. Dios es Amor y nos ama inmensamente. Sencillamente, creo que se divierte cuando ponemos unicornios y hadas en las cajitas. Te mando mi cariño desde España.

I did not see this conversation, I'm so sorry. Too many opinions. Too bad that there is a small percentage of Christian women who feel empowered to judge others and make negative, not-well-thought-out comments. I agree that OCC's rules are what we go by. THEY are the ones running the show and who are receiving all of the salient information needed to make their guidelines. I get it that some folks don't like certain items. I DO NOT get how ugly these Christian groups can get. Such rude comments and discouraging remarks made to packers asking questions. I am not just giving you false flattery when I say that your channel is TERRIFIC!!! You provide a wonderful variety of content and information and demonstrate some very lovely boxes to help spark ideas for others. That's what this is all about -- encouraging each other and growing the ministry and -- wait for the bottom line -- giving children the opportunity to hear about Jesus!!!!!! I feel quite confident that no unicorn stuffy or mermaid doll is going to stop God's plans. God surely has put so many beautiful toys of both varieties before me. I know from working with kids so often at church that they are both well-loved. We should all remember what we were taught as little children: IF YOU HAVE NOTHING NICE TO SAY, SAY NOTHING AT ALL. Especially after volunteering at the Processing Center and seeing so many boxes come through half full and totally lacking toys or color or fun items, I find it kind of petty that anyone would find fault with any box you pack. You are right in that the guidelines to follow are those set by OCC.
