  • As a hairstylist and a salon owner myself, I have experienced both leaving a salon and having a stylist leave my salon. When a hairstylist leaves a salon it can be challenging financially and emotionally for both the salon owner and the hairstylist alike.
The key to handling this situation with class is to keep a level head and don't let emotions get the best of you. This is a natural occurrence in the industry and should be met with support not opposition. Your personal character and business brand are on the line so do your best to keep both positively intact. The last thing either party wants is a bad reputation.

This topic is rarely addressed in our industry in a positive way, so I really wanted to start the conversation. I can't wait to hear what you think!

Thank you so much for this video! My goal is to own a salon and to move forward with the process next year. When you left your previous salon how long did you give the owner a notice before you left? I’m not sure how the owners at the salon I’m at right now will react, if they will tell me to get out right away or accept that I’m growing and give me time.

@@makailamustavitz6696 Great question. This is one of the trickiest parts of leaving. In my situation, I was on a week to week rental agreement. I did give the owner more than a two week notice but I was prepared to be asked to leave that day.
I think it is best to do both. Give at least two weeks notice to be fair but be absolutely prepared to be asked to leave with your notice.
Don't leave their reaction, good or bad, deter you from your dreams and your goals. They will get over it ;)
